Blessings,

I created this digitally using a vintage postcard of a yellow rose as my base. I added the scripture from Philippians 4:8.

A Happy Marriage Starts With Accepting God’s Salvation

By Zhui Qiu, Malaysia

In March 2017, my husband, who had always been taciturn, suddenly turned into a lively conversationalist. Plus he’d often share fellowship with me on his understanding of the scriptures, and what amazed me even more was that what he shared in fellowship was really full of light. I was puzzled; it was like he had suddenly become a different person, and the things he was saying were really insightful. I really wanted to figure out what was going on. One day I accidentally discovered that he was a member of a group in a social media app, and without delay asked him what he was chatting with them about. With a very serious look on his face, he told me that he was considering Almighty God’s work of the last days, that the Lord Jesus had already returned and His name was Almighty God. He said that Almighty God had already uttered millions of words and was doing the work of judgment and cleansing of mankind in the last days. He also said that that fulfilled this biblical prophecy: “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God” (1 Peter 4:17). My husband told me that when we seek God’s appearance and work, we have to focus on hearing the voice of God instead of just blindly clinging to our notions and imaginings. If we don’t seek the truth but just passively wait for God’s revelation, we’ll be unable to welcome the Lord’s return. Hearing this stunned me and it seemed inconceivable. It later occurred to me that I had heard an Indian pastor once say that if we ever heard anything about the Lord’s return, we should seek with an open heart and investigate it earnestly; we couldn’t rely on our notions and imaginings and just blindly pass judgment. So I said a prayer to the Lord: “Lord, if Almighty God really is Your return, please lead and guide me so that I can seek the truth and investigate this with an open heart. Otherwise, please protect my heart so that I don’t stray from You. Amen!”

I opened up the Bible after this prayer and saw this in Revelation 3:20: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.” I had a sudden moment of inspiration and felt that it was the Lord speaking to me, telling me that when He returned, He would knock at my door; I felt this was Him commanding me to listen for His voice and open the door. It was just like the wise virgins in the Bible who rushed to welcome the groom when they heard his voice. I then thought of John 16:12–13: “I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.” As I pondered these Scripture verses, a sense of excitement welled up within me. I realized that the Lord had long ago told us that upon His return He would utter more words and bestow the truth upon us. And Almighty God’s work of the last days is the work of expressing words to judge and cleanse mankind—could it be that Almighty God really is the Lord Jesus returned? If the Lord really has returned and has expressed truths to resolve all of humanity’s difficulties, then there is hope for us to escape from the bonds of sin. Then couldn’t the problems between me and my husband be resolved? I lost no time asking my husband to put me in touch with brothers and sisters of The Church of Almighty God; I wanted to investigate Almighty God’s work of the last days as well.

A reminder we saw along the way

I am the last advocate for reducing texts, scriptures and languages to mere graphic forms. The whole dimension of the text's meaning, histories, combinations, connotations, sound and craft is disregarded. What is more problematic is that I am ignoring the power of words to move and persuade people.

After first year and my first internship, I felt slightly disillusioned and confused by what Architecture meant to me. I took a trip to Myanmar and the trip recalibrated a lot things. I found it particularly grounding and inspiring for some of the things that I want to achieve in the future.

The spatial and formal organisation of the Burmese language in signage was something I found very compelling. At least with the handwritten texts, so much thought and effort was put into crafting every character. You see pencil marks, underlays, brush strokes and outlines. There is a combination of type faces and textures to create visual impact in different programmatic contexts that I find fascinating.

The Burmese name for the round script is "ca-lonh", literally translating to "round text". There are 33 main characters in the Myanmar language. Instead of words that are formed by a combination of alphabets (like in English), this language makes use of additional vowel shift symbols, tonal change symbols and consonant modification symbols. The rounded form of the characters is a result of the use of palm laves a the traditional writing material. Straight lines and forms would tear the leaves.

By compiling this, I am exposing my status as alien and an outsider. However, the focus on the visuals may have the inverse effect of celebrating the text, for text's sake, specifically, it is celebrated as visual form and not just a sign that says "eggs", or something.

Regardless, I tried to interpret the scope of "text" in a broad but focused way - text, in its literal form, text in prayer, text in recitation, text in architectural program (the stupas of Kuthodaw Pagoda). Photos are arranged in chronological order. The journey started in Yangon, then upstream along the Ayarwaddy river, to Mandalay and Bagan, then back again to Yangon.

These photos aren't really anything special in terms of photography, and I am not going to attempt to make sweeping claims about directing a new visual order, but as a composite they attempt to represent my yearning to celebrate a culture of appreciation for the process driven intensity in text making and in the creation of form.

For My people do not know Me, and those within the churches of men refuse

to accept Me as I am, nor do they seek to understand. For when I warn them

of My wrath or speak of My anger, they do always turn to Me a deaf ear;

they can not bear to listen, nor can they discern. Behold, they hate the

sound of My voice, and will not give heed to My correction; they reject and

slander all those I send... *Beloved, they no longer recognize Me, and want

no part with Me as I truly am! Therefore, My wrath shall come upon them on

a day they did not look for, and My anger at an hour they did not expect!

Behold, upon the whole world I shall pour out My judgment in that day!*

"Search the Scriptures."

"You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you

have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. "

John 5:39 (NKJV)

The Greek word here rendered search signifies a strict, close, diligent, curious search, such as men make when they are seeking gold, or hunters when they are in earnest after game. We must not rest content with having given a superficial reading to a chapter or two, but with the candle of the Spirit we must deliberately seek out the hidden meaning of the word. Holy Scripture requires searching--much of it can only be learned by careful study. There is milk for babes, but also meat for strong men. The rabbis wisely say that a mountain of matter hangs upon every word, yea, upon every title of Scripture. Tertullian exclaims, "I adore the fulness of the Scriptures." No man who merely skims the book of God can profit thereby; we must dig and mine until we obtain the hid treasure. The door of the word only opens to the key of diligence. The Scriptures claim searching. They are the writings of God, bearing the divine stamp and imprimatur--who shall dare to treat them with levity? He who despises them despises the God who wrote them. God forbid that any of us should leave our Bibles to become swift witnesses against us in the great day of account. The word of God will repay searching. God does not bid us sift a mountain of chaff with here and there a grain of wheat in it, but the Bible is winnowed corn--we have but to open the granary door and find it. Scripture grows upon the student. It is full of surprises. Under the teaching of the Holy Spirit, to the searching eye it glows with splendour of revelation, like a vast temple paved with wrought gold, and roofed with rubies, emeralds, and all manner of gems. No merchandise is like the merchandise of Scripture truth. Lastly, the Scriptures reveal Jesus: "They are they which testify of me." No more powerful motive can be urged upon Bible readers than this: he who finds Jesus finds life, heaven, all things. Happy he who, searching his Bible, discovers his Saviour.
