A cropped shot of a couple young whitetail bucks butting heads, slipping and sliding in the snow. The buck on the left only had 1 spike, the other antler had fallen off. And yet he was the most aggressive. A treat to watch them.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Rural ND. The store, this truck and the red barn, were all on the same property, which has been for sale and abandoned, for what seems to be decades.

The mallard drakes sometimes like to fight. They grab the other duck’s chest and they don’t let go easily!
Scrap tyres: Rubber Donuts. Billions of waste tyres around the world = massive pollution. Yet ground-up tyres can be used in asphalt for roads. Roads with rubber in them have better grip, and they’re 50% quieter. These last three times longer than normal tarmac, and don’t need as much maintenance.
It's a black and white issue

Scrap lead fetches in the UK about £ 1500 per ton (zinc even more). Scrap metal can be stored almost infinitely. You can't do that with the millions of benefit claimants in the UK. The poor might also not wish to sit still when treated like scrap.
I observed around 40 BNSF SD70MACs on NPR property in northern North Dakota, all reportedly waiting to be scrapped. In this scene the frame of BNSF 8880 is given the torch, while a slightly more in tact 9887 awaits attention at right.
A Northshore Mining train is shown crossing Highway 61 at Silver Bay with material that could not be salvaged and made into pellets or sinter feed and is being moved to the Milepost 7 disposal site. This move, called the scrap train, runs infrequently so we were lucky to catch it.
A change to the routine for the Margam - Corby service is to put some scrap into box wagons and take them back to Margam. The shunting didn't use either the line to the left or the run round line, so the loco picked up the loaded wagons from the siding, moved forwards and put the empty wagons from Wales onto the back, forwards and backwards to put the empties into the loading area (which it was doing in this pic), then forward with the loaded wagons and back onto the main train. If that makes sense.
Scrap atack not enough of one colour or tone so alot of switched up tricks

NECR's local assignment 501 switches cars at the Italy yard. Engine 1750 is an antique EMD SD9, a fairly rare model built in 1959 for the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range. Today, in 2025, it sits in the center of that same yard with SD40-3s, all awaiting scrap.
