Founded in 1867 this school was built to educate former slaves. It was funded by New York educator and philanthropist, Emily Howard. The one room schoolhouse is 26 x 40 feet and was built by local black carpenters and builders. It was known as a graded school because it only educated grades 1 through 7.
Originally it was called the Howland Chapel because on Sundays it also served as a place of worship (for what would become the First Baptist Church congregation) until 1920. The school closed its doors in 1958 after being a schoohouse for almost 100 years. It is little altered from the Reconstruction era, but got new siding and minor restoration in 1991. This is the oldest school in Northumberland County, Virginia. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Portora Royal School, more properly called Enniskillen Royal School, traces its foundation to a decree by James I of England (James VI of Scotland) that was issued in 1608. His wish was that 'there shall be a free school at least in each county, appointed for the education of youth in learning and religion.' It had been intended that such a school should be built in the county town. At the time of the proclamation County Fermanagh had no town to which the description 'county' could be applied, in fact it could be said that the county had no settlements to which the description 'town' could be applied.
The famous, and some would say infamous, Oscar Fingal O’Flaherty Wills Wilde was a boarder; he attended the school during the period 1864 to 1872, subsequently to attend TCD and then Magdalen at Oxford.
Des Moines Township No. 7 is also known as the Cole School. It’s a one-room, red brick schoolhouse in NE Boone County, Iowa. Built in 1888, it served grades 1-8 in this rural area. The building also served as a voting place, a community center, and a storm shelter until the Great Depression when many families left the farms and the school closed in 1933. This school is now a living history museum and is open Sunday afternoons 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. June through August (or by appointment).
It was a bit challenging to get a good shot of this old school without including the numerous utility poles and aerial wires in the vicinity. Regardless, it was interesting to track down this historical site and compose a half-way decent shot of this historic old schoolhouse.

Another "drive-by" shooting - can't remember if we were on the buggy or in the car. Anyway, I love this. Sam Abell, a former Nat Geo photographer, says for an environmental portrait you need three things: setting, expression, and gesture. For a hit-or-miss shot, I am pleased.

This a a small twig of springtime blossoms from a tree at my daughter's school. I asked the ladies in the office if I could clip off a bit for my project. The ladies were hesitant about allowing me to use a small bit of the tree but agreed as long as I didn't take too much. I feel grateful for the opportunity to highlight the beauty of the flowers I am gathering from my area.

Not from this Spring as we couldn't get there. Normally the storks nest there every year. I hope they did, we'll have a look again next year (hopefully). I think this is the southernmost stork nest in Germany
