For my google earth project I am using colour to represent population density but I found it hard to find a system that will offer enough colour variation to show noticable differences.
Originally I was using population as my data but Beijing's population was so much larger than any other of my chosen cities that if used that as my reference, all other city colours will be comparatively small and therefore similar colours. I then moved onto population density to bring the figures down and to more similar amounts. There is still one figure a lot larger than the rest that makes assigning colours hard with rgb, hsb and cmyk colour scales.
I went through a lot of different variations but I found that using the visable light colour scale with nm units is the easiest to show variation. The last three rows use this method. The third row uses Madrid as the largest city and the 4th row uses Buenos Aires as the largest city to compare values and translate to colour. The last row is the same as the 4th except the colour values are reversed, minused instead of added.
