There's a storm headed our way tonight and into the weekend. A pretty good one too - with up to 100 km winds and heavy rainfall warnings. I have no idea how weather savvy birds are but perhaps that explains why there was heavier than usual activity at our bird feeders today. This Junco and a few of his friends came to fill their bellies several times and seemed particularly fond of the left over berries from our burning bush. I was inside the house shooting through a window to avoid spooking them and grabbed this shot in a rare moment of sitting still. Hopefully, they can find a safe spot to ride out the storm.

A couple of weeks after Union Pacific's acquisition of Southern Pacific closed, the UP board of directors went for an inspection trip on the Shasta Route. Early on the morning of September 27, 1996, the directors' special train is entering Dunsmuir, California.
Savvy railfans appreciate that few places in California say "SP" louder than Dunsmuir. While I was waiting for this train, a fellow that had the look of a retired rail saw me trackside. As he walked up, he asked if there was something interesting on the way. I told him a UP special was coming through, with the railroad's directors aboard.
The man got a rather disgusted look on his face. I offered that watching this train roll along the SP, I could empathize with how the French must have felt watching the Germans march into Paris in 1940.
After I made that comment, he smiled, nodded to me, and continued his walk.

I used my husband's I phone to snap this spider quickly...not being savvy in that department, it seems I somehow also applied a filter. Hopefully, the details are clear enough still.
Thought to have been introduced into Australia from Europe and only occurring in the south-eastern part of the country.
The slater-eating spider gets its name from its preference for woodlice or slaters (Isopoda), which it grasps with its specially elongated chelicerae and fangs.
