well, it is time for me to say, all rights reserved ! I'm proud of and I adore this picture because the atmosphere of the lake made me feel free and very happy , which is not exactly my every day sensation !
I waited patiently for the boat to be right in the middle of the light and got a big satisfaction , I even guessed the right combination of aperture and time.

Or - an accidental discovery.
There is a certain satisfaction in discovering through experience the underlying reality of something we take for granted. I mean, we all know what a mile is right - 1760 yards. Well, actually no, it wasn’t that at all, that calculation must have come later, the mile stood alone prior to that.
On my long walks with my guide dog, and later with just my white stick, to pass the time I used to count my paces - sad I know, but I can’t see the scenery, so it kept me awake. I used to count 100 paces on just one foot, on each finger and thumb, and when I had done all digits - 1000 paces, I would transfer a coin to another pocket. As time went on, on certain walks , if there was a marker nearby like a large tree, a road or whatever. - something I could pick up, I would mark the 1000 paces or sometimes 500. One day I went in the car with my wife to see how far a particular walk was and as we drove I asked the distance at the markers I had accumulated, and to my surprise, they coincided almost exactly with 1 mile, or half mile intervals! The fact is - and you can verify this, 1000 strides on one foot is one mile, it is very accurate, to within 20 or 30 paces for me. I am of average height and stride. One hand half a mile, two hands a full mile.
This must be how the distance of one mile came into being, people in times of yore, needed to know how long a journey would take and therefore a standard was set by which anyone could gauge their progress. All you needed was 10 fingers and some stones in a pocket.
As a small boy I can remember seeing very old stone roadside markers - milestones, ’40 miles to London’ or 50 miles to London’ or which ever town, they must be all gone now. Somebody - with a pocket full of stones - must have paced those markers, 100 paces x 10 fingers x 10 stones = 10 miles. He would then leave some sort of marker by the wayside, and later along comes the horse and cart with the large stone markers and drops them off at each marked point.
The measurement of a yard has nothing to do with a mile. The name tells us that, it was obviously a measurement for small pieces of land and fields a *yard*. One day somebody said I wonder how many yardsticks make one of those mile things? They had someone - probably several people walk the mile, then lay down a yard stick at the starting point and discovered you had to flip it 1759 times to reach the mile.
So a mile is not a measurement of yards and feet, it is a measurement of hands and feet, and that photograph above, of all the cow parsley lining the road was taken precisely 3500 paces (on one foot) from my front door, or exactly, three and a half miles……

We are surrounded by beauty and thousands of things demanding our attention that they in and of themselves hold the value and satisfaction we need to solve our deepest void. How many times has the world promised you that if you got the perfect job, house, car, spouse of your dreams, and kids that are perfect in behavior that all of your problems would be solved and the deep void in your heart would be filled. In reality you would be considered very blessed if you managed to have all of those things at the same time. For those of us who may struggle financially or have a less than perfect family situation, it can be easy for us too often covet this idealistic picture that the world tries to market to us as the very thing we need to make us feel complete. We all know that this is not actually true, or maybe you are still figuring that out for yourself. The rich buy more and more things to try and satisfy. The family vacation that you longed for and dreamed of is fun while it lasts, but then what's next? A new car, that only lasts so long. There is a deep void in our hearts that only the Pearl of Great Price can fill.“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold everything that he had and bought it." (Matthew 13:45-46) We can spend our whole life trying to fill this deep void in our hearts and in the end we will still come up empty, but if we pursue the One True Treasure, that is Jesus, our hearts will be made full and the treasures of this world will grow strongly dim.
The New Year is close now & I'm excited to see what it will bring. 2024 was an interesting one:trips to Fiji, a south Pacific cruise, some outback camping, welcomed a new grandson, had a minor TIA , rowed in excess of 1,500kms on indoor rower, bootcamp workouts every second day, (probably why
I tore my rotator cuff), started karate (65 isn't too old to start hey?), numerous trips to the coast's beaches & even had a haircut ;)
Anyway here's my attempted analogy between a coastal walk and the New Year, (it's a bit of a stretch, apologies in advance ;) .......
Wandering along this rockshelf feels a lot like journeying through 2024. There’ve been slippery, mossy patches where footing wasn’t always steady—those tricky moments that kept us on our toes (and sometimes on our butts). There’ve been sharp, rocky bits, demanding resilience, and a good pair of shoes. But there’ve also been stretches of soft, golden sand, moments of ease and calm that remind you life isn’t all rough edges. And that sense of satisfaction of moving on and making ground. The rocks & vegetation are so many shapes, colours, and textures, much like the unexpected turns and delights of the past year.
Now, as I near the headland, anticipation builds. What’s waiting just around that corner? A hidden cove? A wild, windswept beach? An "influencer" taking selfies (they do seem to be everywhere), a mermaid or pirate ship? Maybe another rockshelf to navigate. That’s the thrill of it—like stepping into 2025, you don’t know exactly what’s ahead, but you can’t wait to find out. Bring it on!

This was one of my most popular images on YourShot so I figured I'd bring it over here also.
Last July 4th my neighbor was playing with fireworks and I was sitting on my front porch playing with the camera !! I had not set up the tripod but still wanted to try varying the focus during a long exposure (a trick I had seen someone else do). Took a lot of photos (hand held) but most were not to my satisfaction. This one was!!
Almost done, you can see the tail a bit yet, but there is no "You should see the one that got away" story to this montage. It was an interesting and compelling view of nature!
satisfaction is just when you pass at the right place at the right time and you have thought to take your camera.

P.S What is it with mean spirited people who love to pick on the soft hearted? I read about here on Flickr and it happens in real life too. Get a life!
For the people that get picked on, I understand; It is disheartening when it happens you feel deflated and shocked but then you fight back by not changing who you are. That is the only way to win or they keep doing it because they're miserable so they want to make you just as miserable. Don't give them the power or satisfaction.
For the sociopaths; If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. The world doesn't need to hear it.

Discovering this wonderful flower in alpine grasslands over 2000 metres a.s.l. is always a satisfaction. If the background is the impressive Sas del Valfreida (3002 m asl) the atmosphere is really magic.

Anno 2015, stavo facendo il censimento degli uccelli svernanti per la mia regione e vedere una specie così rara, almeno per noi abruzzesi, è stata davvero una fortuna. Non sarà bella come quando è in abito estivo, ma fotografarla in un porto abruzzese, da sopra una banchina galleggiante e coperto solo da un telo mimetico, è stata comunque una grande soddisfazione. Red-throated Loon. Year 2015, I was doing the census of wintering birds for my region and seeing such a rare species, at least for us in Abruzzo, was really lucky. It will not be as beautiful as when she is in a summer dress, but photographing her in an Abruzzo port, from above a floating dock and covered only by a camouflage cloth, was still a great satisfaction. My dog very satisfied after drinking virgin water of a little hill we climbed at July on our holidays. It was a hot day so we decided to climb the hill to get a bit of that delicious and refreshing water. It was very tasty!
