Great Blue Heron at Pagan Creek Dyke - 20220208 - I've seen this very same bird eat a 5 pound bluefish and yet it can just as easily hunt and eat a vast quantity of minnows.

An adult black skimmer flies low over the sand looking for a particular young black skimmer hungry for a fish. Many young skimmers may approach (with wings out, but flexed at the "wrist," as seen in the OOF bird above) an adult with a fish, but the adult will deny the fish to all but its intended recipient.

Blue Heron has just snagged a meal for breakfast... If you zoom in, you can see that the heron's nictitating membrane is fully covering its eye. This membrane protects the eye when attacking prey underwater. While this little baitfish seems no threat to the heron's eyes, sometimes the heron attacks much larger fish, crabs, snakes, etc. and during the thrashing that occurs, the heron's eyes are covered and protected.
