South America, Brasil, Sao Paolo, Downtown, Avenida Perdo Alvares Cabral (cut from T)

Let's stay in São Paulo for a while.

The Paulistano city planners didn’t fool around while addressing the issue of facilitating car traffic. The result is that Sampa is extremely car orientated and that the main thoroughfares are 2 x 5 lane freeways. Shown here is the Avenida Pedro Alvares Cabral with In the BG is Sampa's high density city centre.

Shot after leaving the Parque Ibirapuera.

This is number 167 of the São Paulo album.

How many can you find?

Pic à front jaune / Yellow-fronted Woodpecker / Melanerpes flavifrons

Multicolored, gregarious medium-sized woodpecker. Note black wings, tail, and mask, yellow forehead and eyering, white rump, and red belly bordered with dark bars. Males have a red crown and neck, which is black in females. Found in moist forests, second growth and sometimes plantations. The call is a loud “kiki-kiki-kirikiki”.

South America, Brasil, Sao Paolo, Parque Ibirapuera, Museum of Modern Art, The Spider, Louise Bourgeois, (slightly cut).

This one is inspired by Rob Oo, here.

Louise Bourgeois. started a global invasion of giant bronze and granite arachnids. Shown here is ‘The Spider’ (1996-1997) which started it. It's on display in one of the modernistic pavilions of the Museum of Modern Art in the Parque Ibirapuera in São Paulo, designed by Lina Bo Bardi and Martin Gonçalves

“The Spider is a giant sculpture of an arachnid that stands on the floor. The artwork is made of bronze and granite and was created in 1994 by the French-born American artist Louise Bourgeois. One of the first of many sculptures of spiders made by the artist, Spider measures 2743 x 4572 x 3785 mm, such that it is large enough to occupy the entire space of a room.”

Bourgeois herself wrote about the sculpture: “The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother." (Source: Tate Modern)

Spider is permanently displayed in the Tate Modern now.

This is number 166 of the São Paulo album.
