I felt lucky to be able to observe an oystercatcher looking for food. Here he pulls out a sandworm (Alitta virens ) and you can see the tiny droplets of water when you zoom in.

""The lugworm or sandworm (Arenicola marina) is a large marine worm. They are not typically visible, but the casts produced by their burrowing make distinctive patterns in damp sand.

A singing lugworm figures in 'The Man Who Dreamed of Faeryland' by William Butler Yeats:

'But while he passed before a plashy place,

A lug-worm with its grey and muddy mouth

Sang that somewhere to north or west or south

There dwelt a gay, exulting, gentle race

Under the golden or the silver skies.'

The Wadden Sea (Dutch: Waddenzee, German: Wattenmeer, Low German: Wattensee or Waddenzee, Danish: Vadehavet, West Frisian: Waadsee, North Frisian: di Heef) is an intertidal zone in the southeastern part of the North Sea.

It lies between the coast of northwestern continental Europe and the range of Frisian Islands, forming a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands. It is rich in biological diversity.

In 2009, the Dutch and German parts of the Wadden Sea were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List and the Danish part was added in June 2014.""

Witnessing the erosion and destructive forces of both volcanism and wind/sea at Capelos on the Azores island of Faial, a SciFi lover will easily be reminded of Frank Herbert's planet Arrakis / Dune and its capital Arrakeen. It certainly had this effect on me and I was ready to witness sandworms in this desert ;) In the background lie the remains of the Capelinhos volcano which erupted twice between 1957 and 1958.

A Semipalmated Plover with a freshly caught sand worm for dinner. These are interesting shorebirds to watch as they stay right at the edge of the wash, or slightly in it, scurrying around digging their beaks in the sand. Their success rate is probably less than 25%, but they try so often they are well fed. View large for best sand worm experience! :D

It is Monday. Thank you for stopping by~!

Seriously now: this is the site where between 1957 and 58 Capelinhos volcano erupted taking with it part of the fertile coastline and creating on the other hand this Dune-like erosion scenario right by the sea on ilha do faial, Azores islands in Mid-Atlantic. The sight of Capelinhos lighthouse in the midst of this "desert" is certainly a surreal touch.

I could have named this one ‘in- and outside the virus.. The question still is ‘how far are we from the exit’. Strength & courage to everyone & take care.

Shot at the Beaufort 04 exposition (2012). Shown here is the Sandworm (by Marco Casagrande). It is 50 metres long and stretches out between the dunes like an enormous wooden worm (it looks like a giant wicker basket but the material used is actually 'wilgentenen', braided willow branches. The holes in the tunnel invite the visitors to enter the worm.

Sandworm is about architecture. The message is that the process of archi design is not sufficient and flawed. It should not try to replace reality. A building must grow out of its location, must react to its environment, and be a reflection of life. Architectural control goes against nature and thus also against architecture. The fact that the structure was blown away by a storm and landed undamaged some 20 m further kinda demonstrated its point.

The start of Stockton Beach. Resorted to google to explain it, being lazy 😉

The Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, in the Worimi Conservation Lands, cover 4,200 hectares, with 32kms of the longest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. These truly awe-inspiring dunes reach heights of over 30 metres forming a majestic, alien-like moonscape - perfect for adventurous spirits, those looking for a cultural experience, nature lovers and even film makers around the globe.

Did some quad bike riding on these majestic and amazing dunes earlier this year, so much fun. And we didn’t get devoured by Sandworms either, stroke of luck 👍😀

"He was warrior and mystic, ogre and saint, the fox and the innocent, chivalrous, ruthless, less than a god, more than a man. There is no measuring Muad'Dib's motives by ordinary standards. In the moment of his triumph, he saw the death prepared for him, yet he accepted the treachery.

Can you say he did this out of a sense of justice? Whose justice, then? Remember, we speak now of the Muad'Dib who ordered battle drums made from his enemies' skins, the Muad'Dib who denied the conventions of his ducal past with a wave of the hand, saying merely: "I am the Kwisatz

Haderach. That is reason enough. "

The globs dotting the sand seen here on the right are the casings of sandworms which are often used as rod bait to catch fish. There are a couple of different methods to collect sandworms with the easiest using a bait pump which is a steel tube with a vacuum sealed pump which sucks up sand and, hopefully a sandworm or two.

Sandworm by Marco Casagrande

Casagrande's Sandworm is a sheltering structure made from willow branches and sand. The artwork, built upon a sand dune, has been developed to appreciate natural light and shadow, offering shades to beach visitors. In its bio-material form, the installation is een organic shell built from willow branches woven through arches of various heights at a length of 45 meters and a widt of 10 meters.

Gurney saves Paul from his demise of being eaten by the Sandworm. As they escape their impending fate on the Ornithopter's boarding ramp, they are stunned by the sheer size of the Sandworm and how it devours the Spice Harvester.

This scene's main challenge for me was shaping the crater only using basic bricks and plates.

The Sand Worm, New Mexico Badlands. For all the sci-fi fans out there, this was Inspired by the novel DUNE by Frank Herbert, cited in 2003 as the best selling sci-fi book of all time. Wandering the desert at night a pale apparition rose from the desert floor, and in the dim light I immediately I recalled the giant Sand Worms of the book Dune. In the dark it's one of those times when chills go down your spine (or maybe it was just the cold. lol). The Sand Worms were mysterious giants that lived beneath the sands on the desert planet Dune (Arrakis), and produced the spice Melange, the most valuable substance in the universe. If you like sci-fi at all, this is one of the best reads ever, highly recommend!

From the Book:

" I must not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my fear.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

Energetically probing in the wave washed sand for small crustaceans and other burrowing inhabitants, this hunakai successfully locates a polychaete worm. Now it scurries up the beach with its prize pursued by the incoming wave. It stays in constant motion while feeding, chasing each wave as it recedes and retreating from each incoming wave. The Hawaiian name for this sanderling, hunakai, means sea foam.

In reality this is a bench, but it made me think of the sandworms in Dune.

The movie Dune seems to have sunk without much commotion, which allows them to multiply out there in the outbacks of Guadalupe.....

I love the weird flickr map they have the strangest places listed i.e. Gum, Iremel, Bragur "towns" of probably 3 people at the most in each BUT they are listed in Santa Barbara County as "populated areas"
