This was the only dunlin (Calidris alpina), among a group of maybe 20, facing this direction and with its eyes open. When I went prone on the sand to take the image, I discovered what made this dunlin unusual. There was a strong wind blowing left to right in the image and it was like a sandstorm at that level. If you look closely, you can see the driving sand. I certainly felt it and worried about the dings I was hearing coming off my camera. So in the end, I really don't know why this dunlin didn't turn its head and close its eyes like the others.
The dunlin is another one of our winter visitors from the arctic.
Happy Passover and a joyous Easter!
The most invigorating coastal walk so far this year…. sandstorms, sunshine and everything else in between!
Flotsam on the windswept beach at Pendine with storm clouds in the distance.
Pendine, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

The second capture from the evening with the sandstorm. The sun had not set, but was considerably softer than normal. The air almost glowed with all of the particles.
what a day - heavy winds blew up the sand of the beach in st peter-ording this evening. tried to shield the camera as good as possible to get this picture.
the sky was so incredible..
Gale force winds whipping up the sand at Three Cliffs Bay in S. Wales today. Had to walk backwards into the gale to reach this point at low tide. It's my favourite beach, only 15 minutes from home.
Así quedaba el camino después de la lluvia de polvo que llegó del desierto del Sáhara, incluso llegó a pintar de marrón la nieve en los Pirineos.
Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is a renowned landmark on the west coast of Denmark. A wild and windy spot. It was expected that the lighthouse would fall into the sea by 2023; however, works to relocate the lighthouse started in 2019 and involved moving the 23 metres high lighthouse, weighing 720 tonnes, 70m inland on specially built rails. What an engineering feat to pull off by the local community. Impressive. Most days it is very windy with 'sandstorms' covering the area. Also what we experienced when visiting. The fine sand grains hit you everywhere so not easy to make a photograph without destroying the camera! So happy I finally had the opportunity to visit. Cool.
In order to take this photo I had to walk for six kilometers over the beach of the Dutch Island Terschelling. The tiny house is a rescue house. The setting really makes a human being feel humble
Those who have spent time on US Highway 6 in Emery County, Utah will likely recognize the distinctive profile of Mt. Elliott, a 7142 ft. peak in the Book Cliffs. We were driving west from Green River when we encountered a short but severe sandstorm near Woodside. Gale force winds tossed debris across the road, into the car, and visibility was zero. Remains of the storm can be discerned as Amtrak's California Zephyr exits Grassy on June 4, 2021.
AZER train 202 is coming into Duncan, AZ., as the sand starts flying from the high winds. Thanks to George for the intel that the train was probably not into Lordsburg yet. I left Illinois the morning before this. After the long drive, with a couple hours of sleep at a flea bag Super 8 in Tucumcari, NM., (which I would not recommend), I was happy to get something for the effort. It was a good start to the trip.
