Once a buyer won the auction for a coffee lot, he will collect a one-kilogram sample to this room and will have a few days to confirm he wants the full lot to be shipped.

Soil samples are taken from key points on an excavation site. Bits of charred grain, snail shells etc. help environmental specialists build up a picture of the past landscape.

Here washed soil samples are dried in a heated cabinet before being examined under the microscope.
