Fire salamanders live mainly in the forests of Central Europe.
As adults, fire salamanders are largely independent of surface waters and lead a hidden existence in niches of caves, under dead wood and tree stumps, between rocks and log piles, and in the gap system of the ground. For females, proximity to spawning waters plays an important role in habitat selection, along with the presence of daytime hiding places.

I found my first salamander of the season yesterday with this Spotted found under a log. I placed him in some moss for a more appealing setting. Also he was put back under his log after the photo session. I went back again this afternoon and he was still under the same log. I just let him be this time though.

Vor einiger Zeit saß ich auf einem warmen Stein und freute mich über die Sonne die auf mich schien, liebe Freunde! Plötzlich, ich wußtenicht was mir geschah, nahm mich eine menschliche Hand und setze mich auf ein andere Hand ab.
Mein Herz schlug heftig, sei ganz ruhig sagte, eine Stimme in meinem Kopf, die Stimmen sind freundlich. Dann machte es klick, klick ,klick und ichwurde auf meine Stein zurückgesetzt. Heute bin ich bei Flickr zu Besuch und wen sehe ich - mich! Bin doch ein ganz hübscher Salamander, liebe Grüße, ich wünsche Euch einen heiteren, friedlichen Sonntag!

I went looking for salamanders on Wednesday and found a few Red-backed ones. They are the ones usually out first so it wasn't a surprise.

I'm back from my trip to North Carolina. My actual main reason of going is that North Carolina has the highest diversity of Salamanders in the world. So that was my main focus on the trip. I captured some other shots but I was mainly in search to photograph new species I don't have in my area.
This was the first salamander find of my trip. Black-bellied Salamanders are a relatively large and robust species measuring up to 8 inches in length. This species is in the dusky family which tend to look alike and make identification difficult.

Sawmill De Salamander plays an important role in the history of Leidschendam and for a major part defines the appearance of the old Leidschendam centre near the Vliet canal. It is unique in its type and surely a monument to be proud of. At the mill wood is sawn in rough planks for wood floors, furniture, ship restoration, etc. Ask the miller, he can tell you more. And the mill guides lead the visitors through the mill.
During a rainy morning the chances are the best seeing a fire salamander in its natural habitat, Bavaria, Germany

You never know what you’re going to find when you start crawling along the forest floor. I believe this is an ensatina, a local lungless salamander. It essentially breathes through its skin so I didn’t risk picking it up and interfering with that process. I’ve only started seeing them in the last few years but they’ve probably been around. They don’t get very big but this one was on the small side of those I’ve seen. The body without tail was just about an inch and a half long. Nothing small about the eyes though.
This is known as a slimy salamander. They exude huge amounts of sticky slime through their skin when they feel threatened. I learned this the hard way!
In spring fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) gather in and around small creeks.

On a rainy morning i was lucky again. This fire salamander was posing on the middle of the trail. So it was down on the belly for myself to get an almost eye level shot... Bavaria, Germany

One of the salamanders that I found this morning at Huntley Meadows in Alexandria, VA. This one was about the same size and shape as the other small red and blacks ones that I found. I don't know enough about salamanders to know if they are variations of the same species.
An unusual migrant I've seen the odd time but disappeared by the time I got my camera. This time I had a macro on in the morning when I happened across it. Only two salamanders in Alberta and this is one of them.

Eastern tiger salamanders in East Texas are poorly understood. They appear to be associated with Eocene sand deposits in the post oak savanna where they are generally uncommon and likely declining. They breed in fishless ponds and seasonal wetlands. This individual was found in what was likely a series ephemeral catch-water wetlands formed in a clay-bottomed depression. The basins have been dug out for wildlife ponds, but evidence of their history is evident through natural contours and surrounding vegetation.
The handful of A. tigrinum individuals from East Texas I've seen in person and photographs have an interesting look to them.
It is well known that tiger salamanders have become established in a variety of locations via introduction as fish bait. I don't think that this is the case in East Texas, however, for a variety of reasons, including the similar appearance of East Texas animals, the paucity of populations here, and their apparent distribution. Similarities that some individuals share with the western tiger salamander (A. mavortium) may be due to the proximity to the contact zone between the species. To me, this animals and others from this population and other East Texas populations favor A. tigrinum physically and ecologically, but I would love to see some genetic analyses.
This animal may be the most beautiful salamander I've had the pleasure of photographing.
The Salamander is a sawmill in the Dutch town of Leidschendam. The mill was built in 1777 as a replacement for a burned-out predecessor from the seventeenth century. It was in operation until 1953. The rotating movement of the mill is transferred to the saw section by means of drive belts, where awnings attached to the crankshaft (kind of connecting rods) set the two saw frames in motion. The Salamander has a crankshaft with four cranks, but only two of them are used. The two saw frames are coupled to this. From the end of the 19th century a steam engine was used to be able to saw even when there was no wind. This steam engine was fired with waste wood. [Wikipedia]
Back from a wonderful trip to Pennsylvania. It was cold and cloudy so I spent most of my time looking for wildflowers and salamanders. I could not believe my good luck at finding 8 Northern Slimy Salamanders! They were all fairly close together and various sizes. Since the total I have ever found in my lifetime was three I was amazed at my good luck!
