explored #163

What a perfect day for a sail on a cool catamaran ...... high heat...slight warm summer breeze....fluffy clouds......just oh so perfect....

Schiffsverkehr auf der Ostsee in Warnemünde

Rhinoceros Auklet: Gray seabird shaped like a football. Breeding plumage shows white belly and thin white eyebrow and mustache. Distinctive stout orange bill with pale vertical protrusion at base. Nonbreeding birds have a plainer face and lack "horn" on bill; juveniles have gray bill. Longer bill than other auklets with a flatter head. Breeds on offshore islands; otherwise found at sea, usually alone. Dives underwater for fish. (eBird)

Common Murre: Black-and-white seabird with crisp patterning. Dark brownish-black above with white belly. Head entirely dark in breeding plumage; nonbreeding show white face with curved dark line below eye. Sides usually show some messy dark streaks. Bill is longer and more slender than similar Thick-billed Murre; but can be difficult to judge at a distance. Also note browner plumage and streaky sides on Common Murre. Breeds in colonies on rocky islands and cliffs; spends the rest of the year on the ocean. Usually single or in loose small groups; in the Atlantic, sometimes seen in loose association with Razorbills. (eBird)

Lifer! We had seen Rhinocerous Auklets (the dark bird swimming by) twice before, but no photos. This time it just sailed past about ten Common Murres (seen previously in New Brunswick and Newfoundland) which had found this piece of wood floating in the water and were taking a break from swimming. Not the world's best photo, but my first one of this unusual species.

This is a postcard for Beverley, who wanted one of Jamie, but as yet I haven't been able to find him. This was the sky that greeted me just after England had scored the last penalty against Columbia to qualify for the world Cup Quarter Finals. Sail away by Nick Cave seems appropriate for Beverley. She'd just love these beaches . The sunrise this morning was equally dramatic, too many opportunities, so little sleep .

The word sail, a monument to poetry, is the name of a steel sculpture by Heinrich Popp.

The sculpture stands on an open field northwest of Sotzweiler, the birthplace of the sculptor and today a district of the Saarland municipality of Tholey in the district of St. Wendel. On an elevation of about 338 metres above NHN, the sculpture represents a landmark visible from afar.

The word sail consists of two sail-shaped triangles, one of which stands on the top and which are twisted against each other. The two halves of the sail, made of stainless steel, are welded together at their highest point. At the same time, the empty space between the two steel plates also has a sail-like shape, depending on the point of view.

The monument, a gift from Heinrich Popp to his home community, was erected in 2005 after several years of planning and execution. The two steel plates were cast in the Dillinger Hütte and rolled to a thickness of 3 cm. The sculpture has a height of 13 meters and a total weight of approx. 30 tons.

The term word sail is also the name of a writing and poetry competition initiated by the artist at participating schools in Saarland.

This is the 'Full Sail' hybrid tea rose. A fragrant rose, first cultivated in Auckland, New Zealand, by Sam McGredy.

The McGredy family are world famous rose growers who came to New Zealand, from Ireland, in 1974, to escape death threats from the IRA (Irish Republican Army) during a time of terrible violence in Ireland.

One of Sam McGredy's most well known roses, developed in Auckland, New Zealand, is 'Full Sail'. Three other of his world renowned roses include 'Sexy Rexy', 'Olympiad' and 'Handel'.

To read more about this legendary rose grower, see:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_McGredy

'Full Sail' is a popular hybrid tea-rose because of its perfectly formed, pure white blooms on long, strong stems with a most sweet honeysuckle and lemon fragrance.

Photographed this evening, Monday 8th March 2021.

Taken on the way in from a whale watch in Provincetown, MA. I've been told it's an especially good year you whale sightings (and we did see quite a few). Everything about this adventure was wonderful and ended with a beautiful ride back to the harbor at sunset.

Looking art the horizon from left to right this panorama features all the hills that link the high level traverse between the Dodds and Fairfield. The conical cone of Catstycam can just be made out centre right. Closer to the camera and centre left of this view Catbells is seen from this unusual side elevation angle.
