PbZ 2455 Wittenberge - Hamburg-Langenfelde

My job at the dv shelter. I had my FIRST BIG hotline call on Saturday, TWO HOURS long and it was AMAZING. I LOVE when I can help others. I will NEVER forget this particular call. Not only because it was my first REAL BIG one but also because the caller said several times, "You are going to make me cry". And he meant that in a nice way. The things I was saying to him really touched him and made him feel so good about himself. THAT makes me SO HAPPY and reconfirms my calling in social work.

My new job that I will be starting on the 21st. I am really looking forward to being a foster care case manager. It will be tough but I KNOW I belong with at risk children. It will be quite interesting going from a SAHM of over 5 years to working TWO jobs but I look forward to the change and challenge.

Today is a very big day for me. I have an interview this afternoon with our local school district. Interviews are always a pretty big deal, especially if like me, you have been a full time mom for over five years.

I find it amazing that it's been over five years since first becoming a sahm. As a young adult I always pictured myself as more of a "career mom" than a sahm. I had Nathan in April of 2002 and I graduated ( with honors! ) with my bachelor's degree in social work in May of 2002.

Right after graduation, it became pretty clear to me that daycare costs for a baby would take up far too much of an entry level social worker's salary. I wanted to stay home but at the same time, I felt like I had to. Then Austin came and well two kids in daycare would have certainly ate up my entire crap salary. Then came our last child Haley. Now that Nathan is in all day Kindergarten and Austin is in half day preschool, I feel like I can now try to find work and maybe actually bring some money home after daycare, GASP! ;)

So here I am hours before my first interview in a VERY VERY LONG TIME. I have always been told how wonderful I am at interviews, so I am not really nervous about that part. It is AFTER the interview I am nervous AND EXCITED ABOUT.

It is bittersweet for me. Finding a job at this point in time is more about being in financial need than my desire right now, but such is life. I know whatever happens is meant to be. I have always been a firm believer in that..

I am ready for a change, staying home has been the hardest job I have ever loved but NOW is the time.

Soooooooo with any luck my job will be in teaching or social work.

That is where my heart is.

Wish me luck! :)

very cool on black

very cool on white

(and NO I don't mean that a cup of SB coffee is THE perfect way, by perfect I mean the MEANING behind the cup of SB coffee)

So today is quite a BIG DAY for me.

HUGE actually.

It is my very last day as a stay at home mom.

My life for nearly the last SIX years.

Life as I know it will DRASTICALLY change on Monday.

Life as I know it and life as my kids know it.

On Monday I start my new full time job as a foster care case manager.

There will be lots of highs and lows with this new chapter but I am SOOOOO READY to take it ALL on.

So where does the coffee come in?

Well it's quite a fun little story.

This morning after I dropped Nathan off at kindergarten, me and the kiddos decided to go through Starbucks, well I DECIDED (LOL). I received some SB giftcards from my mom (THANK YOU MOM!!!!!) for Christmas and about once a week I reward myself with a OH SO FAB cup of SB coffee. It's important to note that we just RECENTLY got a SB in my city, OMG I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, so I am still kinda a SB virgin.

So here I am chatting it up on the phone with my girl Insatiably Sassy while I am pulling into SB. For SOOOOOOO MANY reasons (she is a SB barista ETC) it was JUST FREAKING PERFECT that I was talking to HER while I was ordering my coffee.

Me being the SB virgin that I am I said to her,

"What should I get girl? I want something hot"

Well she knows ME so she knew right away that I would want something HOT and SWEET and something that isn't too strong. Call me crazy but I actually don't care for coffee flavor.

Right away she told me to get the White Mocha.

So that is exactly what I did.

And damn is it SOOOOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!

I almost forgot, OMG!!!!!!!!!!, I kid you not that the barista who took my order this morning while I was talking to Jen was a Jen too!

Jennifer and I go wayyyyyyyy back.

She has been one of my very best friends for over 4 years now. Although it feels more like a lifetime as friends.

We have had SO MANY wonderful and difficult times together, SO MANY highs and lows BUT we always come out stronger than EVER.

Before we both started working, we would literally spend hours on the phone each day. Well somedays it'd be hours. We ALWAYS talked on the phone. EVERY SINGLE DAY (Cara I miss our days of talking too and I LOVE YOU!!) . Now don't get all DCFS on me, it was during nap times lol.

It's been a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry long time since we have been able to do that so it was JUST PERFECT that today while I was at SB, on my LAST day as a SAHM, that I was talking to Jennifer.

Today she just happened to be off because of having a sick kiddo at home. Although you know what? There are no accidents.

We are both spreading our wings and starting our careers right now. It is SO wonderful having someone by your side through all of lifes changes. I am so blessed to have her in my life......as well as many others....You know who you are.

So today it was WAY MORE than a cup of coffee.

It was indeed the PERFECT way to usher in my last day as a SAHM.

Their is nothing quite amazing as feeling as if once again you are coming FULL CIRCLE and that there really are no accidents.

A few weeks ago, a couple people did pics of themselves at the office, wearing pretty skirts and cute shoes.

I'm a SAHM, so here is my "office" :-) This is about as dressed up as I ever get. Two of my kids are at school. You'll just have to imagine that they're surrounding me, asking for snacks or homework help.

Week 1

#437 in Explore 5-4-07

This photo was taken of the piano located at the top of Doug Sahm Hill, looking out toward the river and the skyline of downtown Austin in the background.

When I reached the piano, I found another photographer, and two gymnasts who were somehow involved in the weekend reggae festival that had been held in the large park at the bottom of the hill. There was also a large map of Texas inlaid in the stone at the top of the hill, so that you could see how far it was from Austin to other Texas cities like Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Houston. But nobody was playing the poor, lonely piano; it just sat there, atop Doug Sahm Hill.

I know what you're going to ask: who the heck is Doug Sahm, and why should we care? Well, for what it's worth, this Wikipedia article tells us that Mr. Sahm (who died in 1999) was a San Antonio-born musician who became a significant figure in blues, rock and other genres. He is considered one of the most important figures in Tejano music, and was the founder and leader of the 1960s rock and roll band the Sir Douglas Quintet. He played later with Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez in The Texas Tornados, and also in Los Super Seven supergroup.

So now you know.

*******************************************

A few years ago, a British artist by the name of Luke Jerram came up with the intriguing idea of spreading pianos around the city, with an open invitation for anyone nearby to wander up and begin playing something. Anything. He started in London, and has subsequently brought his festival -- known as "Play Me, I'm Yours" -- to some 19 cities around the world, including such varied cities as Moscow, Sydney, São Paulo, Barcelona, Bristol, Bath, Birmingham, Cincinnati, San Jose, and Pécs.

And then New York City -- which is where I heard about it, in June 2010. Sixty pianos were donated, painted, and "installed" throughout the five boroughs of New York; you can see the locations here. Over a period of two weeks, I managed to visit every single one of the pianos -- except for two in Queens, which had been vandalized and removed before I could get to them -- and photographed them all in this Flickr set

I had such a good time with the New York pianos that I checked Luke's website periodically to see what plans he had for 2011. I learned that he was planning a festival in Adelaide, but that was too far away; and he was planning a festival in Geneva, but the date conflicted with some other plans I had made. I heard that he was considering Salt Lake City, but then it turned out that he actually scheduled a festival in Austin, TX for the month of April -- so that's where I decided to go.

You can see the details of the Austin festival at this Internet site, but the first thing I noticed was that it would be much smaller than the one in New York: only 14 pianos, most within walking distance of one another, and several of them located along the river that runs through the center of the city. As with New York, one of them had been vandalized and removed before I got to it; I heard that a replacement piano was being brought in, but I had only four days in Austin before I had to return home, and I never had a chance to see if it actually arrived. There was also one piano that I simply could not locate: it was supposed to be located on a hiking path in the midst of a wooded area in a rather strange area of on-ramps and off-ramps of the MoPac Expressway, but despite repeated references to two different Google maps on my iPhone (one showing exactly where I was standing, and another allegedly showing me where the mysterious piano was located), I never did track it down.

As for the pianos that I did find: like New York, it turned out that roughly 2/3 of them were sitting empty and alone when I got to them. In several cases, I sat there for half an hour or an hour, waiting for someone to show up and start playing something ... but nobody did. So there were only five pianos where I could actually listen to people playing music; and for each of them I made video recordings with my Sony Alpha 55 camera, and used Apple's iMovie program to clean up the videos and make them more presentable. In order to make them accessible on Flickr, I kept them all very short: Flickr only allows 90 seconds of video for an individual clip. I was also hoping to get some good HDR shots of the pianos at sunrise and sunset ... but nobody else gets up at sunset to play the pianos on public display, as I discovered on my first dawn excursion in Austin.

While I was there, I couldn't help taking some additional photos of the people in Austin as they enjoyed themselves in their canoes and rafts and paddle-boats out in the river. Those photos have nothing to do with pianos or the "Play Me, I'm Yours" festival, so I'll be placing them in a separate Flickr set.

So now I've done two cities ... and I think I'm done. It's been great fun, but it's time-consuming and expensive to venture off to a strange city for the single purpose of photographing a bunch of pianos ... which, alas, turn out to be unoccupied most of the time. Indeed, even if the "Play Me, I'm Yours" festival comes back to New York City at some point in the future, I think I'll skip the pianos located in Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and the Bronx -- most of the action is in Manhattan, and that's a lot easier to deal with, logistically.

But if you haven't seen this festival, I urge you to check Luke Jerram's website periodically, and see whether he might be bringing his festival to your town. If so, take a look at the map, and you can probably figure out which pianos are likely to visited by lots of people -- e.g., in New York, it doesn't take a genius to guess that Times Square is going to get a lot more visitors than a piano in a remote corner of Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Once you've got this figured out, go spend some time watching the action; chances are you'll be amazed and delighted by the variety of people who wander by, do a double-take when they see a piano that they had not expected to see, and then sit down to start playing ...

If there's a "Play Me, I'm Yours" festival coming to your city, and you think there might some interesting opportunities for photos or videos, drop me a note and let me know. I might drop in and say hello...

A variant body for my Lego Oliver Queen, inspired by the Arrow costume that the league gave him, along with the name "Al Sah-Him". That's supposed to be "The Arrow" in Arabic, but I heard it is actually pronounced "Al Sahm" or "Saham".

Anyways, here goes.

Austin, Texas, ATX, TX. Tree, bark. Hipstamatic, HipstaPrint, black and white.

Austin, Texas, ATX, TX, Mueller Austin, RMMA, architecture, house, home, door.

Three things...

1. I SO do NOT consider myself "classic".

2. Nor do I consider myself "desperate", well....desperate maybe for some damn sleep but that's about all.

3. And I always say "full time mom for now" or "sahm for now" when referring to myself.

BUT I thought this picture TOTALLY screamed "The Classic Desperate Housewife", call me crazy but I really love the Fresco treatment on this particular shot.

PS My FAB cousin recently joined 365, I will love you forever and EVER (oh wait, I already do) if you go welcome her :) Here is her link for today's picture -

Dec 28, 2006

I keep coming back to this photo. He's growing up and I can hardly stand it.

Sometimes I think to myself that I would like to have a 3rd child and other times (as of late) I think he may be my last one. I am so thankful that God has blessed me with the opportunity to be a SAHM and do what I love. I continually remind myself to slow down and *watch* him. I find myself smiling as he runs around in circles without a care in the world. I can't believe how fast these last 19 months of him being on this earth with us have gone. I can't believe I EVER thought I couldn't love a 2nd like I love my 1st.

He has such personality, such spunk, a bit stubborn, but full of life. He is a blessing and I am so thankful that He was placed in our lives.

I love this picture of Holly wearing an apple Blossom colored Fairy Hood.

EC 174 Praha hl.n. - Hamburg-Altona

DGS 98008 Hamburg-Hohe Schaar - Stendell PCK

Another RAW salvaged from the clutches of the 2018 rejection pile.

EC 177 Hamburg-Altona - Praha hl.n.

Soooooooooooooo yeah I decided to change my screen name just a bit.

I always liked ~Kell~ but always wanted something with it.

And like I said yesterday, I just love "Nikon Girl".

I just think it's cute.

So Nikon Girl it is!

The new screen name represents all the upcoming changes in my life as well.

My new camera AND even moreso the fact that VERY soon I will be a working mom after being a sahm for over five years. Quite the change indeed!

Woooooooooooooooooot!

PS Feel free to let me know what you think of the new name. BUT be nice! :) I was about to make it just "Nikon Girl" but I know a lot of people on Flickr know me as ~Kell~ ......thoughts? Should I make it just Nikon Girl? Leave it as it is right now (~Kell~ the Nikon Girl)? Or make it Nikon Girl ~Kell~ ?

DGS 99769 Frankfurt(Oder) Pbf - Hamburg-Waltershof Dradenau

SInce I've had Lilah my hormones have been all over the place. I have been either nursing or pregnant or both at the same time for 3 years straight. I am a SAHM of 3 girls under the age of 5. Some people tell my husband and I that we did everything backwards, having a child before marriage, Daniel being in college until a year ago and now establishing his career and many other things. Honestly I feel like for us it has been what makes us such a close family. Somedays I cry, somedays I laugh and somedays I want to pull my hair out...but not once do I wish my life was any different. Our life is so full of happiness and love with our little girls and Daniel is my best friend and I am so GRATEFUL we did it "backwards". It's the right way for us!
