Cactus Wrens build their nests in a variety of different cactus. It is a very safe place to protect their eggs and chicks. The only known predators that can get into the nest is Coachwhip snakes and Sonoran Whipsnakes. I took this photo on the trail leading into Sabino Canyon north of Tucson Arizona USA

The ships were amazing, however no one who organizes these events considers photographers at any point in the set ups. The backgrounds were horrible and only painstaking extractions and PS work can make a truly lovely image.
It's like when you go to visit some amazing castle and right in front of the beautiful view is some stupid sign that could have served its purpose just fine if it had been placed a little to the right or left. Sorry, once I got started it turned into a rant...I'll stop now, but I know my fellow photographers know just what I mean!

The Australian Pelican may feed alone, but more often feeds as a co-operative group. Sometimes these groups are quite large. A flock of pelicans works together, driving fish into a concentrated mass using their bills and sometimes by beating their wings. The fish are herded into shallow water or surrounded in ever decreasing circles.
I am not generally that successful at bird photography even when I have consciously gone out to see birds. This shot of the chaffinch was pure luck. Mary and I were on a walk recently I had taken a shot or two of some wild flowers . I spotted the bird and took a couple of shots without changing settings not really expecting anything reasonable. In fact I am quite pleased with this one I know it could be sharper but for a grab shot its not too bad . It is very heavily cropped

This song was written in 1991, and it sounds so premonitory for this pandemic age, but in fact, the liner notes to the Blue Lines album, it mention the movie Taxi Driver as an influence, and it's clear that the movie was inspiration for this song's lyrics. The movie stars Robert DeNiro as a paranoid Vietnam vet who drives a taxi at night. He becomes obsessed with saving a child prostitute played by Jodie Foster, and ends up killing some people in his efforts. We have a red weather warning here in the South of England this morning. Storm Eunace is one of the worst storms we have experienced in 30 years and we were being advised not to go out today. One gust of wind measured 122mph on the Isle of Wight: this was at The Needles, an exposed point at the western extremity of the island. The Isle of Wight is directly below us on the UK map.
Anyway all the cats are safely tucked up at home, along with Phill.

By prerogative right, the Queen owns all unmarked mute swans on the River Thames. Two livery companies of the City of London, the Vintners' Company and the Dyers' Company, have been given the rights to the ownership of some swans in the Thames.
Each year there is a 'census' of the swans called Swan Upping when those cygnets born to swans owned by the livery companies are ringed accordingly leaving the Queen's swans unmarked.
The Swan Upping ceremony takes place over 5 days in July on part of the River Thames when the swans are taken out of the water given a health check and ringed if they are young birds. The original reason for this ancient tradition was because swans were eaten as delicacy so establishing ownership was important. Swans are no longer eaten and the emphasis is now on conservation and education.
