I sacrificed an pink gin today for this project - well, not totally, I felt I shouldn't waste it...
Normally I don't bother with a straw (a paper straw please note) but I felt it looked better with it. I didn't use ice though, much too cold here.

For some that phrase would describe their eyes after a late night of partying and ringing in the New Year. For me on this first morning of the 20s, it meant first-light reaching Towers of the Virgin in Zion National Park.
Being a native East-Coaster, who has transplanted to life on the West Coast, I still feel that the New Year occurs when the crystal ball drops in New York, and that's the end. So, with the aide of staid Springdale, Utah, it was easy to get an early bedtime on New Years Eve so we could begin the trek to the Canyon Overlook Trail at 6:00 AM to catch first-light and sunrise from this vantage.
The trail is a relatively flat mile hike with a few tricky spots where the ice and slickrock conspire to give even the most sure-footed concern in the dark. Once we reached the overlook, I was a little concerned that our cold trek may have been for naught, due to the heavy cloud cover. Though they were thick overhead, there still was some clearing to the East, along the sun on the horizon to light a narrow band, reflecting off the cloud bottoms and warming the sheer rocks faces of the Temple of the Virgin ahead. This image was captured about 10-15 minutes before the local sunrise time, and is considerably brighter than what we saw with our eyes, due to the 20-second exposure.
Once the actual sun rays reached the Temple directly, the light only lit the areas seen here in red for less than 5 minutes before disappearing above the clouds for the remainder of the day.

The night was quiet, a gentle breeze was blowing outside the temple, where the priestess was. Her sisters had already withdrawn,it was up to her to pray to the great goddess Athena, because Sparta would soon invade Athenas and the men who would go to battle needed their goddess more than ever. 10 minutes que ces enfoirés nous bombardent de leurs gros calibres, voyant à chaque seconde leurs nombres augmenter. Je suis derrière la voiture, qui continue à prendre des impacts, qui bouge à chaque fracas de balle sur la lourde carrosserie. C'est notre seul rempart, notre seul chance de vivre encore un peu plus longtemps cette vie de Merc, cette vie dangereuse où chaque instant est un rapprochement vers la grande faucheuse.
Je regarde mon fusil, plus que 28 cartouches. Je grimace, relève les yeux en l'air, puis les rabaissent vers A440 et Velen. J'ai le regard d'un ange, un protecteur. Velen crie, mais je ne l'entend pas, tout est sourd autour de moi. A440, elle, est impassible, mais je sent quelle à du mal, je ressent tout.
Alors, c'est ça, quand la faucheuse passes ses douces mains froides autours de vous, qu'elle vous enlaces comme un amant, qu'elle vous souffle dans l'oreille : "Vas y.".
Je cligne des yeux, plusieurs fois, une larme coule sur ma joue, je sais, je comprend, tout est clair. Je fixe mon minigun Vulcan, j'ai un léger rictus sous mon masque, mais personne ne le vois, uniquement moi le sait.
Et le moment est venu. Je gueule à Velen et à A440 : "DEGAGEZ DE LA! FUYEZ BORDEL! Je préfère vous voir détaler comme des lapins, comme des putains de sans couilles, que de vous voir mourir à cause de moi!", elles sont silencieuses. Elles me regardent, l'air de dire "Ne fait pas ça.", mais si, je vais le faire. Je les regarde toujours fixement, leurs faisant signe de la tête, A440 ne veut pas, mais ne dit rien, elle reste là, plantée, buguée. Velen lui attrape le bras et lui dit "Fait chier! Viens on se barre!", je lui souris, à cette petite android. Je lui souris comme pour lui dire "Tout vas bien, ne t'inquiète pas, on se reverra." comme le ferait un père à son enfant.
J'attrape mon minigun que je pose sur la voiture, évitant les balles, je saute sur le capot, me voilà à découvert, les tirs s'arrêtent un instant, je gueule "Allez venez bandes de gros bâtards! Je vous attend!" puis je vide mon chargeur sur ces connards tout en souriant. Je souris parce que je suis heureux, je souris parce que au moins une fois dans ma vie, j'ai sauvé deux misérables vies.
Ils répliquent, avec violence. Je me prend des impacts dans l'épaule, mais je ne bouge pas, une dans la jambe, je faibli, et je m'agenouille. Je relève la tête, mon arme est vide, je me relève comme un lion à l'agonie, soulevant d'une main ce minigun si lourd, je jette mon arme comme un chiffon, qui s'écrase sur le bitume froid, ces enfoirés me veulent mort, alors je vais leurs donner du fil à retordre. Je jette un œil derrière moi… Désert, elles sont parties.. Je soupire, j'appuie de mon index sur la détente, et fait pleuvoir un feu de balle sur eux. Les douilles claquent contre la carrosserie de la voiture, elles forment un épais tapis de métal, je continue d'encaisser, je continue de donner la mort, comme dans un baroud d'honneur, je les fixes, chacun leurs tours.
Puis, la bouche de mon canon s'arrête de cracher des flammes. Je comprend, ces bâtards se rapprochent, ils continuent à tirer, un balle arrache mon bras droit, je vacille encore plus, une autre viens dans la foulée m'arracher la jambe droite. Je tombe. Tout est ralentis. Les lumières aveuglent ma vision, c'est comme si plusieurs heures passaient avant que je chute lourdement au sol, mon sang, coulant sur le goudron, zigzagant entre les douilles encore chaude. Je vois la fin, la faucheuse est là, à m’accueillir dans ses bras.
