Rumah Kampong is a Malay word for 'Wooden House', generally found in Asia Tropical Region. Its simple roof was architectured to provide coolness during a hot weather and channels rain water to the sides during tropical storm. There are less than 100 of these houses here in Singapore now, most of which have been demolished to make way for urbanization. Thanks for all viewings and comments my friends :-)

The people of West Sumatra belong to an ethnic group known as Minangkabau, a people with a rich and ancient culture. The bull is extremely important to their culture. The first thing one notices in West Sumatra is the huge roofs pointed upward at the sides. The traditional Minangkabau house was known as Rumah Gadang or Rumah Adat, and was covered with colorful woodcarvings. This one in Bukittinggi is a good example.

"Rumah Batu" (the Stone House) is how people in the neighborhood call it. Passing in front of the house years ago, my high school self and friends was stunned by its stoney, unusual appearance and speculated on who owns and lives in such house. I've never imagined that someday I would meet the owner of Rumah Batu, became one (out of thousands) of his students, and eventually visited the house years after I graduated from college.

The house was built in 1996 by its owner/architect, Prof. Gunawan Tjahjono. For more info about the house, visit archnet.org/library/sites/one-site.jsp?site_id=9876
