ParisPeople (more candid and non-candid street shots of people made in Paris)
This photo was taken by famed Hungarian-French photographer Brassai in 1932 Paris. Brassai made great creative use of the mirrors in Parisian bars and cafes. Here the uncanny doubling of the "happy group"....a man in a fedora between the two women, his arm over one's shoulder....invites us to shake our heads and look again. Brassai's sly reminder that a photograph is just a picture, no more substantial than a reflection in a mirror, only intensifies the vivid scene.
Born Gyula Halász (1899-1984) he took the French pseudonym, Brassaï, in honor of his Hungarian hometown in Brassó, Transylvania. The young artist moved to Paris where he intended to paint, but took up photography when he recognized the camera’s inimitable ability to capture the light in the dark, and the way it revealed itself on silver gelatin paper. These images, which earned him the title of “the eye of Paris” on an essay by Henry Miller, gave Brassaï instant entrée to café society and the haute monde, to the glorious glamour and decadence that was Paris between the World Wars. In this fleeting moment of history, Brassaï captured it all.
Among the most noteworthy haunts of Brassaï’s shady characters were the dance halls, called 'bals musette' for the bagpipe instrument which the peasants of Auvergne had brought with them in the 19th century (in the 20th century, the musette had given way to the accordion, but the name remained). In artistic terms, Brassaï’s most prolific location was perhaps the Bal des Quatre Saisons in Rue de Lappe, near the Place de la Bastille.

I miei passi sulle pietre della Rue de Lappe... Ed il giorno comincia
My steps on the stones of Rue de Lappe....And the new starts again
Romanian-born photographer Brassai (real name Gyula Halász (1899-1984)) had a passion for photographing the lower depths of Paris...the thugs, prostitutes, and the cheap dance halls and bars they frequented. The legendary Rue de Lappe in Paris is a little narrow cobbled street in the 11th arrondissement that was famous for its nightlife prior to the Second World War. It was late in the 19th century that the area started picking up a reputation as a center of Paris nightlife.
Brassaï was one of the most prominent figures of twentieth-century photography. Called "the eye of Paris" by his friend, author Henry Miller', Brassai's work both celebrates and reveals the complexities and hidden sides of French society.
This 1933 Brassai photograph was seen on display in a survey of the photographers work at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).

Rue de Lappe
Rue de Lappe is a street in the 11ème arrondissement of Paris in the quartier Ruquette. It has a length of 265 meters anda width of 10 meters. It starts at 32, rue de la Roquette and ends at 13, rue de Charonne. Very famous for its nightlife, nowadays it is the heart of the trendy Bastille district.
The street owes its name to a market gardener, Gérard de Lappe, who had gardens there in the 17th century.

Sometimes when you take a portrait, you gotta wait a lil bit for the poser to quit his "standard" face.
Je m'ennuie. Mon compagnon de soirée règle des détails professionnels. Du coup, je photographie n'importe quoi n'importe comment.
