Lone Star Citrus Growers hosts a roundtable discussion in their packing warehouse with Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and Texas Governor Greg Abbott in Edinburg, Texas, on Feb. 9, 2026. The meeting focused on a new commitment between the United States and Mexico to strengthen implementation of the 1944 Water Treaty, ensuring reliable water deliveries for South Texas farmers and ranchers. The stakeholders presented the needs they face and what actions the U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA, could do.
Lone Star Citrus Growers is a family-owned and operated Texas grapefruit packing house, established 19 years ago. The company specializes in Texas-grown citrus, primarily grapefruit (about 80%) and oranges (about 20%), shipping roughly one million 40-pound cartons annually during its October–March season. Known for its advanced processing technology, Lone Star Citrus uses digital camera systems to grade and size fruit, ensuring quality standards for “fancy” and “choice” grades. Their grapefruit includes the popular Rio Red variety, harvested fresh and processed within days to maintain peak quality. The company is a proud member of Texas Citrus Mutual (TCM) and the Texas International Produce Association (TIPA), organizations that advocate for South Texas growers.
At the end of the process USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) inspectors were stationed along the packing line, conducting routine checks to ensure fruit met federal phytosanitary standards and monitored grading accuracy, verifying that Lone Star Citrus Growers’ automated sizing and sorting systems correctly classified fruit by grade and size. Their work helps prevent the spread of plant pests and diseases while maintaining quality standards that protect both domestic and international trade for Texas citrus growers.
