At 11:33 am on 28 April 2025, a major power blackout («Apagão» has it was called in Portugal) occurred across the Iberian Peninsula affecting Portugal and Spain. The failure lasted for about ten hours.
The abrupt loss of electricity caused an immediate and total disruption of daily life. Telecommunications collapsed, payment systems stopped working, transport was paralyzed and it became impossible to work or even use a mobile phone.
As the hours passed, people poured into streets, squares, and gardens. What began as a moment of uncertainty and anxiety gradually transformed into an unexpected atmosphere of solidarity and communal calm. The cityscape shifted into something resembling a quiet Sunday or holiday, with neighbors talking, families gathering outside, and strangers sharing information.
Despite the scale of the disruption, the social response revealed a remarkable capacity for collective resilience; a moment in which a technological failure briefly gave rise to a renewed sense of community.
