The Cuckoo-roller is the only bird in the Order Leptosomiformes.

It is a large bird, almost the size of a dove, that inhabits the forests of Madagascar.

It was very difficult to find and even more difficult to photograph. He was almost always facing us in a dark place and against the white sky behind the leaves

This was the only record and the only time I saw this emblematic species.

The Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus) is an African member of the roller (or Coraciidae) family of birds. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. It prefers open woodland and savanna, and it is for the most part absent from treeless places.

Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds and rodents moving about on the ground. During the breeding season the male will rise to a fair height (10 to 12 metres), descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries. The sexes are alike in coloration, and juveniles lack the long tail streamers of adults.

This beautiful Lilac-breasted Roller was photographed strategically perched on a bush looking for its prey on a late evening game drive in Maasai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya.

a couple more of the roller as i am not likely to see it again unless i cross the pond

CSX L233-14 is seen easing downgrade into the very small town of Turkey on the Clinton Branch. They are returning from interchanging with the Clinton Terminal Railway, itself a very undershot shortline. This line flies under the radar of nearly every railfan, but it is very scenic and easy to chase trains on. On point of 233 is C40-8W #7894, which is the main reason I went out to see this train. Being a huge sucker for dash 8s, I knew I had to finally go see this train after procrastinating for so long. You can't get any better on a class 1 than this.

Because they don't seem to mind sitting for each passing photographer, I do have a number of shots of these beautifully coloured residents of Namibia. My excuse is to point out that each one positioned itself in front of a harsh, cloudless, blue sky. I can therefore offer viewers a choice of backgrounds for each shot if I replace the sky.

A steam roller for Pizza is something I wanted to have for quite a while, just came around this week to build it.

Taking indoor pictures with artificial light is really something I'm unpractised in, so please just look at the build and not at the abysmal lighting.

The M-SSNP works up a slight grade leading into Bingham Lake. Cool to see the train undulate in the varying terrain. Meanwhile, today was warm enough to cause some heat distortion seen in the background obscuring the windmill.

The Lilac-Breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus) is an African member of the roller family of birds. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula, preferring open woodland and savanna; it is largely absent from treeless places. Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds and rodents moving about at ground level.

Nesting takes place in a natural hole in a tree where a clutch two to four eggs is laid, and incubated by both parents, who are extremely aggressive in defense of their nest, taking on raptors and other birds. During the breeding season the male will rise to great heights, descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries.

This species is unofficially considered the national bird of Kenya.
