Here are the rollers installed in the newly repaired roller hooks. I've temporarily put a rag under them to show off one of the other oddities of the Goldin's ink train.

If you look closely it appears the rollers aren't parallel and have slightly more space between them on the right side of the press than the left. This is not an optical illusion. The rollers are approximately 1/16" closer together on the left side.

This strange system was built-in by design at the factory. William Golding shows this design in his last patent (US 1,124,010), granted in 1915, just one year before his death. It was intended to cause the rollers to shift left to right just a bit during printing to act a bit like a distributor roller. This acts in concert with the bottom ink distributing plate to even out ink coverage as much as possible.

I haven't had the chance to test it yet, but it should be interesting.

My wife and I saw this guy walking a giant lamp shade, and the woman carrying a chandelier on the West Side. She was like: take a pic! So I did. Bonus: a couple of skate dancers from Central Park. Double Bonus: I found the light leak I knew had to be there.

ink the press and allow it to run in. stop press, and roll the carriage forward to the middle of the press bed (and on 219, remove the steel distributor assembly).

on (this) 219, the rollers have 1/4" recessed slot head set screws, and 1/2" height adjustment screws on each end of the carriage. the center set screws must be backed-off before beginning adjustment.

start on the operators side, front roller, end.

crouching to sight the underside of the form roller, using the height adjustment gauge, bring the roller up or down via the corresponding screw to _just_ contact the roller. flip the gauge on its flat end, slide it under the front roller, and flip the barrel back on its side. pull it forward. you're looking for an 1/8" streak. adjust height via screw to achieve that streak.

move to the back roller end. do the same.

move to the opposite side of the press. same drill.

move the gauge to the center and check again, front and back form roller.

set the set screws.

make a full rotation through each check to double-check.

all good? drop distributer carriage back in place.

Treasure Valley Rollergirls vs Jet City

Sat Oct 4, 2008

The Golding was used as a die cutter before we got it. This was because the inking system was damaged at some point. Among other problems, three of the six roller hooks had become bent and wouldn't hold the rollers.

Here, I'm heating one of them so I can re-form it. I'm happy to report that all three rollers mount fine now.

Note: this technique is only to be applied when there is no paint on the roller
