The skating rink at Rockefeller Center is the #1 tourist attraction in NYC during Christmas season. The hunt for the huge Christmas tree every year is well-publicized, and the lighting of the tree has a carnival-like atmosphere which many mark as the actual beginning of the Christmas season. Somehow I managed to get a few minutes at the rail overhead despite the crowds of tourists.
The statue of Prometheus overlooking the skating rink is the best known and most photographed monument in all of New York City. "Created by Paul Manship (1885-1966) who held a great fascination for mythological subjects and events, it has become the main attraction of the Lower Plaza. Its central theme is best stated by the quote that’s carved in the red granite wall behind him, taken from the sixth-century B.C. Greek dramatist Aeschylus: 'Prometheus, Teacher in Every Art, Brought the Fire That Hath Proved to Mortals a Means to Mighty Ends.'"
