Another look at this gorgeously presented old aircraft.

The Spitfire Mk XIV was essentially the Mk VIII deign but with a Griffon engine instead of the Merlin. Compared to earlier marks, the XIV was a bit of a handful to fly, but by 1943, the RAF had many more experienced pilots.

The Spitfire Mk XIV could fly at over 440mph and, being able to climb almost vertically, it "gave many Luftwaffe pilots the shock of their lives when, having thought they had bounced you from a superior height, they were astonished to find the Mk XIV climbing up to tackle them head-on, throttle wide open!" (Wiki)

Over 950 were built from 1943.

Pilot John Romain, as always, treated the crowd to a stunning display of aerobatic airmanship in this beautifully presented , Griffin engined Spitfire.

John Romain gave us a great display in this Spitfire Mk XIV, serial RN201 at Old Warden. From its home at Duxford, Old Warden is about 40 minutes drive, but probably only 10 minutes by Spitfire!

Pilot John Romain is clearly visible through the windscreen of this powerful Spitfire Mk XIV, serial RN201.

Capable of over 400mph in level flight, this Griffon engined mark of Spitfire, described as 'a hairy beast' to fly, could climb almost vertically and gave many enemy pilots the shock of their lives, having thought they'd bounced a Spit from above.

This particular machine is painted to represent one that took part in an air race in 1947. Seen here, away from its Duxford base, over Old Warden.

Wearing an unusual post-war livery, this Spitfire is a RR Griffon engined MK XIV, serial no. RN201. We were treated to a dazzling display on a beautiful summer's day by expert pilot, John Romain. This was at Old Warden, not far from this Spitfire's base at Duxford - about 40 minutes away by car; I'm guessing about 5 minutes flying time in a Spitfire! I am pleased with the prop circle visible in the picture.

Spitfires could be delivered with or without their famous elliptical wing tips. Omitting, or 'clipping' them gave a better roll rate at lower altitudes, at the expense of performance at higher levels. These Spitfires are both Mk XIVs with RR Griffon engines, MV293 on the left and RN201 on the right. MV293 is painted in the colours of the pre-Independence Royal Indian Air Force, as delivered in 1947, and RN201 is decorated in a scheme used by a similar aircraft that took part in an air race, also in 1947. Both were photographed going over the top of a loop at (different) air shows in the UK. I have adjusted the pictures to make them the same size and angle for comparison.

John Romain gave the large crowd an exhilarating display whilst a 'Big Wing' formation of 14 Spitfires and 3 Hurricanes formed up.

John Romain gave us an amazing exhilarating display in this Spitfire. The MK XIV was essentially a MK VIII with a RR Griffon engine - more powerful then the early Merlins, but more of a handful to fly. Almost 1,000 Mk XIVs were built and were the major Griffon engined type to see wartime service. They brought down around 300 V1 flying bombs and one even brought down a Messerschmitt Me 262 jet in 1944.

The role of 'The Joker' is a solo aircraft performing aerobatics to entertain the crowd whilst a larger formation of aircraft forms up, out of sight, for a fly past. Although the 'main event' is the mass flypast, The Joker often steals the show - especially with John Romain at the controls.

This unusual colour scheme was used by a Spitfire to take part in the 1947 Blackpool Air Races.

The Mk XIV Spitfire was the first RR Griffon engined Spitfire model to take a significant part in WW2 - almost 1,000 being constructed, mainly seeing action between D-Day and VE day. Many V1 flying bombs were downed by MK XIVs, and a Me 262 jet fighter was also claimed.

Originally delivered to the Belgian Air Force as SG-31, she became G-BSKP after completion of the re-build in 2002

Then flying as RN201 until 2007, she was sold as N201TB in the USA

John Romain in RN201 at Shuttleworth in August this year will go down as one of my top aviation highlights this year. Aerial displays really do not get much better than an absolutely stunning shiny silver Spitfire being thrown about the sky with one of the best display pilots around.
