Red Lotus Sea - Talay Bua Daeng
The Red Lotus Sea Talay Bua Daeng is an amazing place to visit, at its best and most colorful in the cooler months of the year around sunrise in the early morning when all the flowers are open and the first sunrays of the day add even more colour to the spectacular views.
Originally called Nong Han, the Red Lotus Sea or “Talay Bua Daeng” in Thai is an amazing 4000 hectare natural phenomena near the town of Kumphawapi in Udon Thani province, about 45 minutes south of the city Udon Thani. The departure point of the boat tours is at the small village Ban Diam where you can find boat tours of about 1 - 1.5 hour from 300 baht for a small boat for two people, or a bigger boat for 500 baht for up to seven people.
Despite the name Red Lotus Sea the millions of brightly colored flowers are actually pink or crimson water lilies and it is a lake and not a sea but despite these technicalities it is an amazing sight that simply has to be experienced and every year thousands of people flock to this lake in the winter months to witness this amazing spectacle of colours.
The flowers are not the only thing to see on the lake, birdwatchers delight in spotting the many birds that make these wetlands their homes, and there is also a temple on the island in the middle of the lake that can be visited.
The flowers open at night around 9PM and close up again in the morning when temperatures rise, so it is essential that you go to see them early, at sunrise if you are a morning person, or 9AM at the latest if you like to sleep in a bit. Find your accommodation near the Red Lotus Lake so you only have a few minutes to drive to the boat departure point at Ban Diam. Bua Daeng Homestay Resort also books boats for their guests to save waiting in the queue and can arrange transfers between accommodation and the lake.

Seems to do a Monday-Friday rotation....Turku -Helsinki-Paris- Helsinki-Turku
Without doubt a great original scheme.

The DC-9 Series 20 was designed especially for SAS who required improved short field performance (by using the more powerful engines and improved wings of the Series 30 combined with the shorter fuselage of the Series 10. Ten Series 20 aircraft were produced, all of them the Model 21 - one was unfortunately written off in an accident in 1973 (LN-RLM).

A little bit of a shame that this one has lost one of its wheeltrims, but it was so original! Definitely one of those satisfying spots and I must admit I am quite surprised that these survive at all given that awful reputation they had once upon a time. Stuck out a bit in a well off neighbourhood too...
Before the cleaning crew got its rags on the car. Brake dust behaves like a liquid on the fender. Blue pads must be the "race compound"

Well this is one of my top 4 favourite spots so far this year, and it is also still on owner number one, something I strongly suspected considering its London numberplate, condition, and the nostalgic Heathrow sticker on the window, with it living only a few miles from there. Aside from the paint fade, it looked in good shape, and has just been retaxed until March 2014! The rise of a cult following for these little things suggests a good future for it too...
