Macro Monday: #Jagged
Size of the frame: 1,8 x 1,8 cm / 0,7 x 0,7 inches
Flatearthers, this is for you: Seven flat suns rise above Flatmountains in Jagged Country, illuminating another beautiful Monday at the peak of unimaginativeness. Or simply another "too many choices, not enough time, but can't skip, either" theme, and another Sunday rather spent in the sunshiny park happily snapping away instead of doing my homework and spend it taking MM captures. Well. I took many captures, of different things, of the sea shell I got on a holiday in Kroatia when I turned 4 (and my Dad had told me then that I can hear the sound of the sea when I hold it to my ear... I can still hear it - or is it tinnitus?), but what looked jagged turned into soft round shapes in close-up. More captures of this or that, and in the end I couldn't decide which. So here you go. Found in my kitchen (where else). Those jaggedy jags ("Yakety Yak!") which look rather soft in the capture, are actually pretty nasty and sharp-edged.
Please see the first comment, now that would have been perfect for "Jagged" ;-)
A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!
Photograph taken at 10:08am at an altitude of one hundred and thirty eight metres on Thursday 12th September 2013, standing in Loch Voil perched precariously upon some rocks, looking towards the old stone bridge on Loch Voil in the centre of Balquhidder, a small village in the Stirling Council area of Scotland. It is overlooked by the dramatic mountain terrain of the Braeds of Balquhidder. Rob Roy is allegedly buried in the cemetary a few hundred yards from this beautiful location.
Loch Voil, is a small freshwater loch approximately 5 km (3½ miles) in length. and separated from Loch doine by the River Larig. and is drained at its northern end by the River Balvaig at Balquhidder.

Born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939, Tina Turner traveled a long and winding road to becoming the most successful female rock-artist of all time. From "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" to "What's Love Got to Do with It?", from "Proud Mary" to "We Don't Need Another Hero", her playlist could be the musical score for the last half of the century. She was the Acid Queen in "Tommy", and Aunt Entity, in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, a role that provided a rich vein of wonderful iconic quotations, including my particular favorite, her parting goodbye to a defeated Max (Mel Gibson): "Well, ain't we a pair, Raggedy Man? (laughs) Goodbye Soldier!"
a few other classics:
Aunty Entity: Do you know who I was? Nobody. Except on the day after, I was still alive. This nobody had a chance to be somebody.
Max: I don't know anything about methane.
Aunty Entity: You can shovel shit can't you?
Aunty Entity: And what did you do before all this?
Max: I was a cop, a driver.
Aunty Entity: But how the world turns. One day, cock of the walk. Next, a feather duster.
Aunty Entity: You think I don't know the law? Wasn't it me who wrote it? And I say that this man has broken the law. Right or wrong, we had a deal. And the law says: bust a deal and face the wheel!
Max: So, what's the plan?
Pigkiller: [laughing] PLAN? There ain't no plan!
Savannah Nix: :"This you knows: the years travel fast and time after time I done the tell. But this ain't one body's tell; it's the tell of us all, and you've got to listen it and member, 'cause what you hears today you gotta tell the birthed tomorrow. I's lookin behind us now, into history back. I sees those of us that got the luck and started the haul for home and I 'members how it led us here and how we was heartbroke cause we seen what they once was. One look and we knew'd we'd got it straight. Those what had gone before had the knowin' and the doin' of things beyond our reckonin', even beyond our dreamin'. Time counts and keeps countin' and we knows now, findin' the trick of what's been and lost ain't no easy ride. But that's our trek. We gotta travel it and there ain't nobody knows where it's gonna lead. Still, in all, every night we does the tell so that we member who we was and where we came from. But most of all we 'members the man who finded us, him that came the salvage, and we lights the city not just for him but for all of 'em that are still out there, cause we knows there'll come a night when they sees the distant light and they'll be comin' home."
From the early 50's until a fire in the 80's this was the site of Gold Star Studios, then the center of rock music recording on the West Coast. Located on Santa Monica Boulevard near Vine Street (about a mile south of Hollywood & Vine), it is near Paramount Studios (incorporating the former RKO/Desilu Studios) and the Hollywood Forever Cemetary where numerous famous stars are buried.
As one of the first independent recording studios it was not constrained by the "old line" policies of the majors and developed its own unique commercially succesful sound. Using custom-built recording equipment and its "best ever" echo chamber, it was home to Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound", an unmatched "Wrecking Crew" house band, and source of hundreds of hit records.
A very abbreviated list of top artists that were associated with Gold Star:
Hal Blaine - the world's most recorded drummer
Tommy Tedesco - the world's most recorded guitarist
Jack Nitzsche - arranger - including many hits produced by Phil Spector. Co-wrote "Up Where We Belong".
Sonny Bono - percussion. Brought his girlfriend Cher to Gold Star. The backing on his defiantly patriotic "Revolution Kind" is a great example of the Gold Star sound.
Cher - graduated from backing singer to superstar. Recorded "Bang Bang" and "You Better Sit Down Kids" at Gold Star
Ronnettes - recorded "Be My Baby" at Gold Star -- favorite song of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. The elaborate intro to their "Do I Love You?" clearly highlights the elements of the Gold Star sound.
Beach Boys - recorded "Don't Worry Baby" at Gold Star - a tribute to "Be My Baby" with same Hal Blaine drum intro
Paul Revere & the Raiders - recorded "Kicks" and "Hungry" at Gold Star with Hal Blaine on drums
Buffalo Springfield - recorded "Expecting to Fly" at Gold Star with Jack Nitzsche as arranger
Righteous Brothers - recorded "Ebb Tide", "Unchained Melody", "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" (the most played song ever on US radio), and many others at Gold Star
Ike & Tina Turner - recorded "River Deep-Mountain High" and "I'll Never Need More Than This" at Goldstar - Tina was never hotter and no one ever did a better job of soaring over the Wall of Sound
Darlene Love - recorded the best rock Christmas song ever at Gold Star: "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"
Crystals - recorded "Uptown", "He's a Rebel", and the quickly withdrawn "He Hit Me and It Felt Like a Kiss" at Gold Star. Group often included Darlene Love.
Glen Campbell - started as session guitarist at Gold Star
Leon Russell - played keyboards at Gold Star early in his career
Later recordings that paid tribute to the Gold Star sound include:
Bruce Springsteen - "Born to Run"
The Tubes - "Don't Touch Me There"
Eddie Money - "Take Me Home Tonight" which featured Ronnie of the Ronnettes reprisng the chorus from "Be My Baby"
(These are the one's that instantly come to mind -- there are hundreds more).

Added February 2013: As the result of a comment, the photo has been updated. According to Wikipedia:
"Gold Star Recording Studios was located at 6252 Santa Monica Boulevard near the corner of Vine Street in Hollywood. The studio closed in 1984. A fire occurred in the structure after its closure, but all contents had been removed prior to the fire. The building was later demolished. A strip mall currently stands on the original location."
6252 Santa Monica Boulevard is now occupied by the water store in the above photo. The photo previously here was 6223 Santa Monica Boulevard, across the street. It had a "strong resemblence" to an alleged photo of the studio on a now non-existent web site.
Vegas Day 4.
Yesterday my mom and I saw Celine Dion perform at the Coliseum in Caesar's Palace. My mom's been wanting to see her Vegas show for the past 15 years, so when we heard that she was starting up a new residency here which started just last week, I was happy to get tickets and go with her.
This woman knows how to put on a show. Her performance was amazing.
