The Canyon Wren lives in a crack. Not metaphorically. I mean an actual geological fissure, which—if you're a Canyon Wren—is the bird equivalent of a fixer-upper with excellent acoustics.
I found this one perched in profile, tail up like a radio antenna, framed by sunlit stone and pure black shadow. It looked like he’d hired a lighting crew. He hadn’t. He’s just naturally dramatic.
You don’t usually see them before you hear them, mostly because they're the color of old terra cotta and have the body mass of a granola bar. But their voice? Pure liquid poetry. A musical waterfall cascading down the cliffs, echoing across the canyon like a ringtone from heaven.
Assuming, of course, you're not hiking with someone who talks nonstop about their cousin’s colonoscopy. Or worse, wearing headphones. Because in that case, the only thing you’ll hear is Spotify yelling about car insurance.
But if the canyon is quiet, and your ears are working, and the birding gods are feeling generous, you just might spot him: pale throat, tiny profile, wedged into a rock like a soprano in a shoe box. He won’t move much. He won’t dazzle you with color. He’ll just stand there like the stone belongs to him and start to sing like the canyon is his concert hall.
Which, honestly, it probably is.
He sings in a crevice, not much of a den,
But it echoes quite nicely for one little wren.
I heard it and my body immediately changed.
It was the kind of sound you could not stop hearing all day.
The kind of sound that lingers like a grateful earworm.
The first melody your mother sang to you as a child.
It sounded like mourning doves first learning to laugh.
It felt like a walk through a soft mossy forest.
Taking a bath in winter as the snow softly falls outside.
The first time we kissed.
A revelation.
A staircase gaining sentience.
Ripples on water after a fifth stone skipped.
The beginning of your favorite novel.
The part of the daily film that is your life you’d like to
Rewind and play all over again.
The hope of a new day and world.
Oh, but it was just your new ringtone.

Porcupine or pineapple is a favourite very brief song by Brakes, and is a ringtone that can be embarrassing!! These wonderful rocks at Marloes in Pembrokeshire are so wonderful, I've got to go back again on a quieter day, perhaps when a big sea is running!!! It's such a fantastic beach for the diversity of cliffs and rocks!! Probably Porcupine!!

In a patch of city trees wedged between parking lots and power lines, a mockingbird practiced his craft. Not on songs of meadowlarks or warblers—he had those already. But on stranger things, it's car alarms, ringtones, and microwave beeps. even the faint two-note squeal of the subway brakes.
The pigeons shook their heads.
“Ridiculous,” they cooed.
The sparrows rolled their eyes.
“You’re embarrassing the species.”
Even the crows cackled.
“Those aren’t songs, they’re malfunctions!”
But the mockingbird didn’t stop.
Night after night, he performed a medley of the city’s oddest sounds, a one-bird orchestra of confusion and clang.
One evening, a shadow slipped through the streetlights,
a feral cat, slow and silent, creeping toward the trees.
The sparrows froze.
The pigeons panicked.
But before the cat could pounce, the mockingbird cut loose:
REE-REE-REE-REE!

Time is rushing by and sweeping us all away with the ebbing tide. As we grow older the perception that time is moving faster can overwhelm us. To hear that "melancholy roar", as Matthew Arnold put it, can so often lead to the "denial of death" (Ernest Becker). We hope for immortality, and since the dawn of human history this has been the primary generator of all religious belief.

But in truth, our desperate attempts to pretend the tide won't go out for us (you know the feeling that we are the exception to the rule), are eventually revealed for the self-denial they really are. The fact is we are all going to die, and some of us sooner than others.
But that's okay, life is not about us! Our dearest loved ones die and the world goes on. And so it will be when our time comes. The important thing is that we actually got to experience those eternal moments when we stopped and listened to the ocean, or gathered exotic shells on a beach of golden sand. Hampi was the capital of Vijayanagara Empire, a powerful kingdom in the south of India, ruling over 3 centuries. The city, declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site, still being excavated, become rich through trade and renowned for its art, architecture and vibrant culture. For miles, I couldnt see any sign of modern civility, sans the occasional ringtones and selfie poses. I visited them at dawn for 4 days, and couldnt get enough of it.
Brace, Ill be posting from this region for a while now :)
This picture shows Achyutaraya Temple at Hampi, once a vibrant center of worship and processions, it now rests in contemplative ruin. The close-up carvings on its pillars reveal astonishing craftsmanship, where stone was shaped with patience, precision, and devotion.

Seth: Maybe he parked it far enough down the street that we can't see it.
Teddi: Oo! Or maybe -- (as she's turning from the window she accidentally kicks a medium sized box that's sitting beside the dront door, apparently something that was delivered prior to their arrival) Oops! Sorry. Just call me, butterfeet.
Seth: (snorts) I think I--
Bailey/Teddi: No.
Teddi (looking at the box) How come you haven't opened it?
Bailey: (shrugs) It's from the Airbnb guy. One of us probably left a hat or a shirt at the cottage.
Seth: You haven't looked?
Bailey: I've been the tiniest bit busy. (motions at herself and then at the elaborate decorations in the room)
voE: (door tap) C'mon, let me in.
(Teddi jumps because she's close to the door, then she grins and reaches for the doorknob.)
Teddi: (whispers) I'm gonna give him a scare.
Bailey: No, Teddi. Don't.
Teddi: Why?
Bailey: Because there's still nothing on the camera.
Teddi: (leans over to look at the laptop) If he was lying on the porch, off to the side, and reached out to the door--
Bailey: (interrupts) I don't think Erebus would go to that much trouble for a prank.
Seth: Hang on. I can solve this. (takes out his bejeweled mobile phone)
Teddi: How?
Seth: I'm calling him. Listen at the door for his ringtone.
(Teddi scoots closer to the door, making a "SH" motion at Bailey as she puts her ear close to the door.)
