The Rila Lakes are a group of high mountain lakes in the Rila Mountains about 2 hours drive from Sophia, Bulgaria. A long ski lift takes you from the base in the valley to near the top. You then have to hike up the rest of the way and down various trails to see the lakes.

January sunset from 2700 meters above the sea level in the Rila Mountains of Bulgaria, between Elenin Vrah peak and Maloyvitsa Peak.

The peak is part of Rila Mountain which is the highest mountain range of Bulgaria as well as on the Balkan Peninsula.

Northern view from the Musala peak (2925 meters) at full moon.

When the moon is full on a winter night in the mountains, you can easily hike without a flashlight. Musala Peak, 2925 meters.

It was about -15C, but not windy and, unfortunately, not cloudy. Sunrise at 2925 meters, Rila Mountains, Musala Peak. A wider (and a few minutes earlier) version of www.flickr.com/photos/raskoll/32915629785/in/dateposted-p...

My old photo of one of my favorite places in Rila mountain ... I have posted it in G+ and I found it recently pinned from someone on Pinterest ....... Have a happy days ahead my dear friends!!! Hugs and many smiles for all of you!!! :-)))

First rays of sun, painting the cold winter peaks of Rila in warm bright red colors. I love the combination of cold and warm colors which winter sunsets/sunrises bring.

The last shot of my Musala series ;) Even though this winter sunrise was nothing special, I was lucky to find some untouched snow for the foreground and, coupled with the temperature inversion with the low clouds, the scenery seems interesting to me. View towards Malka Musala and Irechek peaks, with the Balkan Mountains on the horizon.

View from the vicinity of peak Malyovitsa (2729m) in the Mountains of Rila towards the Pirin Mountains. You can also see the Rila Monastery in the valley.

Meteorological Station located on Musala Peak, the highest peak of the Balkan Peninsula - 2925 meters, on a full moon night.

One of the more prominent and popular peaks of Rila - Malovitsa. It stands at 2729 meters above the sea level and was a joy to hike to for 4 hours on a sunny, yet cold (around -12 C in the afternoon, after sunset) day and to return back to my car after a 2 hour night hike back :) Winter is definitely my favourite season both for photography and for hiking.

In the Rila Mountains of southern Bulgaria.

Countries In the southern Balkans, nearer the sea, have a Mediterranean climate and grow mostly olives for cooking oil. In other countries with more temperate climates, they have to grow an alternative, such as sunflowers, for oil. This is a field in western Bulgaria, near the Rila Mountains.

The Rila Mountains in Bulgaria offer some fabulous hiking. As can be seen as well as there being some high mountains with great ridges there is also a high plateau. This plateau, a little like Dartmoor and Exmoor in the UK is home to a practically wild heard of hill ponies. I understand that certain locals have a right to coral them and sell off a small excess in the population.

Somehow this day I had managed to persuade Shirl into taking a mountain hike. The provision of a chair lift would at least gain some altitude for us but the rest had to be done through lung and limb power.

View from the Musala Peak (2925 meters) at dawn, towards the Pirin Mountains, painted by the first rays of the rising sun in red.

Pine trees in Malyovitsa Valley, Rila Mountain

It isn't often that I have managed to persuade Shirley to go mountain hiking and dependent upon your point of view this hike could be construed as a modern day success. I say modern day success as when we first got together she mountain hiked a good few times. On this day once she was higher up in the mountains she had calmed down a little and seemed to quite enjoy the superb scenery, however I recall that I was well and truly in the bad books during our main ascent.

The Rila Mountains in south western Bulgaria are a real treat and well worth the effort of the long drive to their foot and the effort to climb them.

Winter in the Rila Mountains, near the Maloyvitsa Peak (2729m.)

Towards the end of last year we took a short trip to Bulgaria and for me the highlight was a hike through the Rila Mountains. Shirl came along which meant that my aims for the day were reigned in somewhat. Either way it was a great day out and left an impassion on me sufficient to make me want to return.

Summer trekking in Rila Mountain

Hike in the Rila Mountains of Bulgary.

An image taken on a skiing trip to Bulgaria. The ski resort of Borovets is located in the Rila Mountains, which spend the majority of winter snow capped and covered in skiers and snowboarders! I took a trip up the gondola with my camera and liked the atmospheric clouds above these peaks.

Early June is the time to shoot crocuses in Rila National Park. Wherever there is a meadow - you will find thousands of these tiny beautiful flowers. Having a tripod with which you can shoot from 15sm above ground helps in circumstances like this.
