The Teatro Continuo was created in 1973 in Parco Sempione in Milan on the occasion of the XV Triennial. It is one of the most important public works by Alberto Burri. Sober and rigorous, specially made for Milan and placed on the ideal axis that crosses the city and the park itself. The artwork serves as a perspective range and a quaint machine that is always ready for use. With this work, Burri expressed his interest in theater by extending the idea of the scene to urban space: a framed living space, a free base in the heart of Milan for independent use. The Teatro Continuo is a tribute to the Parco Sempione and it turns the individual into the protagonist by offering the pleasure of his own spectacle.

After a first selection, rigorous enough, it 'remains far too many

Too bad that the Digital Photography has appeared too late for me.......Can no longer travel anywhere , can no longer walk long in Paris , (health problems)

Stained Glass window in St John the Baptist, Markyate (detail). What triggered my interest in this image is its rigorous adherence to a traditional type of Latin Christian iconography that goes back to medieval times - including the golden-haired Jesus child. However, this window was created in 1895 when the visual language of contemporary art was profoundly different. And not only that, Black churches in the Caribbean and in South Africa had already produced black representations of the Madonna and the Jesus child. This image, however, is not in dialogue with the past - it is quoting the past.

This striking apartment building by NAC Arquitectos was close to the apartment I'd rented for my stay in Valencia. Consequently I walked past it many times so I witnessed the effect the suns position had on the appearance of the building.

From the Valencian based Architects website, "The project is the result of rigorous work in developing the program, understanding our client's intention to create a distinctive product, both in terms of the spatial quality of the residences and the final appearance of the building. The aim is to create a residential complex with a unique character based on methodological rigor, not merely on superficial formalism.

The design aimed for a bold, clear, and formally simple image. Each volume is generated from a strict rectangular plan that expands and grows at each of its vertices, creating terraces for each of the apartments. Curves are used as a subtle mechanism to create tension in the facade planes, providing the flexibility to accommodate these terraced spaces. The alternating floors at different heights determine the final appearance of the complex.

The result is a building in which sinuous planes alternate, growing and moving, emerging and entering, generating terraces and shadows, brightness and reflections."

The liturgical assembly's stance in faith is vertiginous, on the edge of chaos. Only grace and favor enable it to stand there; only grace and promise brought it there; only grace and a rigorous divine charity permit the assembly, like Moses, to come away whole from such an encounter, and even then it is with wounds which are as deep as they are salutary. Here is where “something vastly mysterious’’ transpires in the Church as it engages in worship worthy of Creation and congruent with the human City within which it abides as witness to God in Christ.

This random pattern of stones looks beautiful to me. It almost looks like it was designed, but of course it wasn't. It is just the way the world is. But to see it is the really important thing.

Did you know that astronomers have calculated that there are far more stars in our known universe (let alone those we do not know yet) than there are grains of sand on earth? It's hard to get our head around the vastness of this universe, when we realise how utterly insignificant we are by comparison. But as the French philosopher and mathematician, Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) once said, "Man is only a reed, but at least he's a thinking reed."

As far as we know, human beings are the only creatures in the universe with a consciousness so evolved that we are able to make calculations about the size of our universe. How blessed we are. In many ways the emergence of human intelligence (not always an oxymoron), is the universe becoming conscious of itself.

THE NUMBERS

According to calculations based on rigorous observations, there are 10,000 stars for every grain of sand on earth.

Approximately 7.5 x 10 to the power of 18 grains of sand on earth = 7.5 quintillion.

1 x 10 to the power of 24 to 2 x 10 to the power of 24 stars in the known universe = 1-2 septillion.

Mindboggling. No wonder the Bible translator, J.B. Phillips, once wrote a book called, Your God is Too Small.

The roses are unbearable in the vase

jaime sabines

maybe there is a rigor to find you

the heart of rigorous rose

since, strictly speaking, it is not a small thing.

Don't let your pink rigor make you tired.

Rosa you are here or anywhere

with your rigor of petals, how dull

It's your formula intact, so beautiful

that it is now necessary to discredit you.

So abandoning yourself in your branches

or leaving you on the side of the road

Applying rigor is the best.

And rigor does not allow us to make you

lyres or odes like vases, but...

Damian (very significantly) argues that the fact that the age of martyrdom, the age of the Church’s ‘struggle’, is over does not mean that the attitudes associated with martyrdom are obsolete: the Church in its ‘peace-time’ must preserve the same discipline that produced the martyrs, must maintain absolute detachment from the world at the heart of its life by the practice of the most rigorous asceticism. In common with several patristic writers, Damian takes Philo’s De vita contemplativa to be evidence for the existence of Christian ‘monks’ in Egypt in the first century ad; and indeed, he goes so far as to say that the ascetics described by Philo are simply Christians in general, not a special class among them22 – that is to say, that monastic asceticism is identical with Christian life as it should be lived. In contrast to the presupposition of Cluniac monasticism, that the monk is a functionary in Church and society, Damian sees monastic withdrawal – and especially monastic poverty – as the essential mark of the Christian, tout court: the monk is not (to adapt the famous phrase of Eric Gill about men and artists) a special kind of Christian; every Christian is a special kind of monk.

The Tomb Guard walks the mat on a quiet, overcast, chilly Spring day.

Hand-picked and rigorously trained soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, "The Old Guard", have the solemn duty and humbling responsibility to maintain the highest standards and traditions of the United States Army and the Nation while keeping a constant vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns; with a special duty to prevent any desecration or disrespect directed toward the tomb.

As part of this soldier's training he was required to master performance on weapons manual, ceremonial steps, cadence, military bearing, and orders; meet Tomb uniform standards for Army Dress Blues, Shoes, glasses, and brass and metals, and be able to recite 35 pages of information on the history of the Tomb and Arlington National Cemetery, verbatim - including punctuation. A successful trainee is awarded the Tomb Guard Identification Badge - the least awarded badge in the Army, and second only to the Astronaut Badge in U.S. military rarity.

The soldiers assigned to the Tomb Guard embody the 99 words of The Sentinel's Creed - line six of which is the title of this image. So solemn and unique is their duty, the Tomb Guard Identification Badge is the only military badge that can be (and has been) revoked for any action that brings disrespect to the Tomb during the lifetime of the Tomb Guard.

Standing guard at Syntagma Square, in front of the Hellenic Parliament, the Evzones are among the most visually arresting figures in modern Greece — and among the most misread. What many visitors register as elaborate pageantry is, in fact, one of the most symbolically layered institutions in the country: a living monument in which every stitch, every gesture, and every deliberate step carries meaning accumulated over two centuries of national history.

The word Evzone (Εύζωνας) derives from the ancient Greek eúzōnos — meaning "well-girt" or "lightly equipped" — a term used in classical Greek literature to describe agile, light-armed warriors. The modern unit traces its institutional roots to December 12, 1868, when a royal decree formally established four battalions to guard the Greco-Ottoman frontier. But their deeper origins lie with the klephts and armatoloi — the mountain guerrillas who fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence beginning in 1821. These irregular fighters, agile, fiercely independent, and recognizable by their distinctive dress, became the founding myth of Greek military identity. Their uniform was eventually formalized, adopted as official national dress after independence, and survives today in the last remaining Evzone unit of the Hellenic Army. Before assuming their exclusively ceremonial role after the Second World War, Evzone units served as active combat formations through the Balkan Wars, the First World War, and the Asia Minor campaign — conflicts whose weight is part of what gives the guard its particular gravity.

Selection is rigorous and voluntary. All Evzones are volunteers drawn from the Infantry, Artillery, and Armoured Corps of the regular army, identified during basic training and required to complete at least six months of active military service before beginning Evzone training. The minimum height is 1.87 meters — candidates are also expected to be able to raise their legs to shoulder height, fully extended, during the march. Training lasts approximately one month and concentrates on physical conditioning, mental endurance, ceremonial precision, and the ability to stand completely motionless. The attrition rate is widely reported to be significant.

Their primary post is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier — a cenotaph honoring all unidentified Greek soldiers fallen in every conflict of the modern era. Two Evzones stand guard around the clock, every hour of every day of the year. Every Sunday at 11am, an entire platoon marches from the barracks behind Parliament down Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, accompanied by a military band, for the Grand Changing of the Guard — the most elaborate version of the ceremony, drawing large crowds. They also raise and lower the Greek flag at the Acropolis every Sunday, accompany the President on official visits abroad, and represent Greece in state ceremonies worldwide.

The uniform is a work of sustained craft. Each piece is entirely handmade by a small tailoring workshop within the Presidential Guard compound, and the full ensemble can take more than eighty days to assemble. The foustanella — the white pleated kilt that defines the silhouette — is made from thirty meters of white fabric and carries four hundred pleats, each one officially associated with a year of Ottoman rule over Greece (1453–1821). Historians note that the garment itself predates Greek independence and was common across the Balkans; the numerical symbolism appears to have been assigned after independence, most famously associated with revolutionary leader Theodoros Kolokotronis, who wore a kilt with nearly four hundred pleats. The attribution may be part retrospective, part national construction — but it is now inseparable from the uniform's meaning. The white of the foustanella and the undershirt is understood to represent the purity of the independence struggle. The krossia, the braided fringes across the chest, are blue and white — the colors of the Greek flag.

The pharion, the red cap with its long black tassel, concentrates two layers of mourning: the red stands for the blood of the fallen, the black tassel for the grief of those left behind. The fermeli, the embroidered vest, is the most labor-intensive piece in the ensemble — hand-stitched in gold and white thread with patterns drawn from Orthodox iconography and folk tradition, and estimated to take over a month to complete. Beneath the foustanella: a white cotton undershirt, two layers of white woolen stockings on each leg, and black silk garters at the knee.

The tsarouchia — the heavy red leather shoes with their conspicuous black pompom — are perhaps the element that most surprises first-time observers. Each pair weighs approximately three kilograms and has between sixty and one hundred twenty nails hammered into the sole, a feature originally designed to provide traction on rocky mountain terrain and which produces the sharp, resonant sound heard with every step. The pompom on the pointed toe has been explained variously as insulation, decoration, and — in popular tradition — a hiding place for a small blade in close combat. The blade theory has no firm historical documentation, but it persists as part of the folklore surrounding the unit.

Every element of the ceremonial movement is deliberate. The guards stand motionless for an entire hour — an exercise in physical discipline that most people could not sustain for ten minutes under any conditions — and then perform their relief in pronounced slow motion. The pace is practical: it allows circulation to resume gradually after prolonged stillness. The sharp, heavy stamp of the tsarouchia against the stone pavement, audible across the square, carries a tradition that is widely shared among Greeks and members of the Guard themselves: it is a signal to the dead — to all the unnamed soldiers commemorated below — that Greece endures. Some guides and popular accounts describe the full choreography as tracing the Greek word Όχι ("No") — the same word spoken by Prime Minister Metaxas to Mussolini's ultimatum in 1940 — through the positions of arms, legs, and rifle. This reading is patriotically resonant and deeply embedded in Greek popular culture, though it represents an interpretation of the movements rather than their documented choreographic origin.

What emerged from the memory and traditions of mountain guerrillas fighting for the survival of a people has become, over two centuries, one of the most recognizable ceremonial institutions in the world: soldiers who carry the weight of an entire national memory, one deliberate step at a time.

Bodegas Ysios

The building (designed by Santiago Calatrava) is conceived as an element completely integrated in the surrounding landscape and, at the same time, as an autonomous site-specific sculpture.

The Bodegas and Bebidas group wanted a building that would be an icon for its prestigeous new wine "la Rioja Alavesa" and at the same time accomodate the precise and rigorous program of spaces needed to make, store and sell wine.

The site is uneven, with pronounced grade changes of as much as 10 meters from the highest levels in the north, to the lowest in the south. About half of the site is occupied by vineyards.

Unfortunately the building was closed that day...so no look inside.

The main block of the Parliament Buildings combines Baroque details with Romanesque Revival rustication

Despite many problems, including exceeding budget—the original budget was $500,000; the final amount was $923,000—the British Columbia Parliament Buildings began operation officially during 1898. The grand scale of its 500-foot (150 m) long andesite façade. central dome and two end pavilions, the richness of its white marble, and combination of Baroque rigorous symmetry, use of domes and sculptural massing with the rusticated surfaces of the currently popular Romanesque Revival style contributed to its being an innovative and impressive monument for the young province.

The historical recreation of Candamo, in addition to an entertaining, playful and festive show, is the result of rigorous research and documentation, not in vain this type of shows has long been common in other European countries where they have great roots; in Spain for several years they have been imposed as another alternative form of tourism, trying to de-dramatize the warlike situations but not forgetting their origin and consequences. They simply manage to arouse an interest in history that is not reflected in movies or books.

Publication History

Sasha Bordeaux is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was initially primarily associated with Batman, and subsequently evolved an association with Checkmate in two of its incarnations.

Bordeaux appears in the DC Universe series Peacemaker, portrayed by Sol Rodríguez.

Publication history

The character was created by Greg Rucka and Shawn Martinbrough, and first appeared in Detective Comics #751 (December 2000).

Fictional character biography

Former Secret Service agent Sasha Bordeaux was hired by Lucius Fox of Wayne Enterprises to act as a bodyguard to Bruce Wayne. Though resistant to the idea, Lucius left Bruce with little choice but to accept Sasha. This led to a very strained working relationship as Sasha took her duties seriously and Bruce did not.

She got the distinct impression that he was trying to make her quit and suspected there was something false about his playboy behavior. He was too physically fit for such a laid back man; he disappeared at night for supposedly social reasons but almost never actually saw him with a woman. Her suspicions were confirmed when she found a secret compartment inside his suitcase containing Batman's field arsenal.

Some time passed without Sasha bringing it up, but it soon became clear to her that Bruce was aware that she knew. When the inevitable confrontation came, she had no intention of laying off her duty of protecting Bruce Wayne--whatever he may be wearing at the time--and Bruce judged her unfit for following him around at night. To solve this, Bruce put her through a rigorous 30-day training program to make her fit. Sasha rose to the challenge and persevered through the program. She was given a costume to patrol with Batman at night as Bodyguard.

Checkmate

When David Cain framed Bruce Wayne for the murder of Vesper Fairchild, Sasha was implicated as well. She was convicted of murder before the truth was exposed and sentence to Blackgate. She refused to even take the stand during her trial. Telling the truth would have meant exposing Batman's identity, so she said nothing.

After three months time in Blackgate, Sasha's death was faked by agents of Checkmate. She was said to have died from internal injuries suffered during a brawl in the prison yard. The truth was that she had been recruited by Checkmate, by Agent Jessica Midnight, who sold her on the idea of joining and began her training. Reconstructive surgery gave Sasha a new face to go along with her new identity. However, Batman didn't believe she died in prison and was tirelessly looking for her and harassing Checkmate for answers.

Enough became enough, and Sasha was told to resolve the situation with Batman. Sasha met with Bruce and vented her frustrations over what had happened. She figured out that she never discovered he was Batman on her own. He made her find out. It was the only way he knew how to deal with how close they were getting. She told him she loved him, and he admitted he loved her as well. But she wouldn't come back, and she asked that he not try to find her again.

The OMAC Project

Sasha quickly rose in the ranks of Checkmate, becoming the Black King's Knight. She was the protector and right hand woman of Maxwell Lord, but soon she would come to realize how dangerous of a man he was.

She was present when the second Blue Beetle broke in and discovered Max's plans against the metahuman community, and helped to make sure he didn't escape. However, she didn't really believe that Max would kill him. He did, and Sasha incinerated Ted Kord's body as ordered. But she also sent Kord's broken lenses to Batman to put him on the trail of the conspiracy going on. She then stood by while Max executed the rest of Checkmate's royalty and took full control over the agency.

Sasha further betrayed Max by meeting directly with Batman, but this was discovered by Max. OMACs were sent to interfere, and she was captured to be brought back to Max. He wanted to know how much she had revealed about his OMAC Project and was surprised how she was able to resist his psychic influence. She escaped custody along with Jessica Midnight and sought out Max to kill him, only to find that he had already been killed by Wonder Woman.

Not only that, but Brother Eye had activated the OMACs and begun purging what remained of Checkmate. Sasha was mortally wounded by an OMAC, but rather than die, she was transformed into something resembling an OMAC. She had unknowingly been infected with nannites, but not in the same way as the other OMACs had. She was intended to be something else--something autonomous. She still had her free will.

Sasha and Jessica set to work organizing what was left of Checkmate along with every other agency they could get a hold of to stop Brother Eye and the OMACs. A plan was devised that would allow Sasha to use her new transformation to wipe out a large portion of the OMACs if they could be gathered together. The world's superheroes banded together to engage the OMACs and serve as the bait, while Sasha hacked the network and initiated a shutdown command.

There were still other OMACs out there, and Brother Eye remained as well. Sasha was part of a unit of heroes assembled by Batman to go into orbit and take out Brother Eye. They activated its propulsion system to knock it out of orbit, sending it plummeting to Earth. What survived reentry crashed down in the Rub Al-Khali Desert, and Batman sent Sasha to make sure nothing of it could be rebuilt. Brother Eye contained a database containing the identities of most of Earth's superheroes, and no one could be allowed to get that information.

Sasha had to contend with the Israelis, the Chinese, the Rocket Red Brigade and a Checkmate now under the command of Amanda Waller. She made it into the crashed satellite, confronting a still operational Brother Eye. It revealed that it infected her with the nannites and Max knew nothing about it. She was intended as a backup system should Brother Eye ever be compromised. It tried to overwrite and take over her body, but she detonated the explosives she brought with her just in time. Sasha emerged from the wreckage, having shed most of the metal skin that came with Brother Eye's transformation of her.

Sasha Return to Checkmate

When Checkmate became a U.N.-sanctioned agency, Sasha Bordeaux was appointed as its Black Queen, and Jessica Midnight joined as her Bishop. She had routine clashes with the royalty of Checkmate's White side. With Alan Scott, it tended to be over her operational use of violence and the body count that came along with that. With Amanda Waller, it was because Amanda was after her job as Black Queen.

She also began a secret affair with Mr. Terrific, who was the White King's Bishop when it began. Early on, she lost her Knight, Jonah McCarthy, on a raid of a Kobra base in the Gulf of Aden. She would later replace him with the French special agent Mademoiselle Marie.

Leading a joint operation with the Outsiders to take out secret experiments on Oolong Island, Sasha was abducted and held captive by Egg Fu. The scientist conducted vicious experiments on her to study her nannites, going so far as to amputate her arm to see it would regenerate completely out of nannites.

Batman joined the rescue effort and brought her back to Checkmate. Amanda Waller attempted to blackmail Sasha into resigning with proof of her inappropriate affair with Mr. Terrific. However, Sasha aligned with Mr. Terrific and Taleb Khalib to turn the tables on Waller, finding evidence of the Salvation Run and forcing her resignation.

When Darkseid took over Earth during the Final Crisis, Sasha bunkered down with what remained of Checkmate in a facility deep in Antarctica to coordinate a resistance. However, the bunker was breached by Darkseid's enslaved forces, and Sasha was touched by the Anti-Life Equation. She made it to a more secure area of the bunker with Mr. Terrific and Taleb Beni Khalid but couldn't resist the Equation. Rather than become one of Darkseid's slaves, she gave herself over to her OMAC programming and went into stasis mode.

In order to access some OMAC codes to implement a counterattack plan, Mr. Terrific had to awaken her. She was awakened long enough for the Anti-Life Equation to fully take her, but Mr. Terrific forced her bio-functions to shut down before she could do anything, forcing her into a comatose state with her OMAC nanotech sustaining her.

Sasha remained in a comatose state even after Darkseid's forces were defeated and the Earth was saved. All efforts to reawaken her failed, as her exposure to the Anti-Life Equation kept her in a critical condition. She was moved to the Justice Society of America's brownstone headquarters in New York City, where Mr. Terrific and Dr. Mid-Nite could give her as much specialized medical care as possible to free her from her slumbering prison.

Mr. Terrific never gave up hope on her, and his faith was rewarded after the Justice Society's conflict with a new incarnation of Kobra led by Jason Burr yielded the means to help her. Artificial intelligence programs Burr salvaged from Checkmate's Code Zoo came back into Mr. Terrific's possession, and one of them was an alien program capable of cleaning out the malicious code crippling Sasha's nanotech system. He ran it through her, and it succeeded in bringing her out of her coma.

Powers and Abilities

Sasha Bordeaux is the recipient of extensive training in unarmed combat from the Secret Service, Checkmate and Batman. This likely puts her as a skill level well above most other espionage agents.

The OMAC nanites in Sasha's body give her a powerful and unique healing ability. The nanites will replace any lost tissue with its own cybernetic tissue at a very rapid rate. The OMAC nanites in her body also enhance her strength, reflexes and her senses.

The cabins give views of the Irish Sea looking over to Rhyl and the Isle of Man, as well as the Snowdonia National Park. There are currently 20 cabins in service, which leave each station at approximately one-minute intervals. The highest point from the ground is around 80 feet (24.38 m). Nine pylons support the cable.

Beethoven, Symp. no 3, Eroica

From Wikipedia.

Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Opus 55 (also Italian Sinfonia Eroica, Heroic Symphony) is a structurally rigorous composition of great emotional depth, which marked the beginning of the creative middle-period of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven.[1][2]

Beethoven began composing the third symphony soon after Symphony No. 2 in D major, Opus 36; he completed the composition in early 1804, and the first public performance of Symphony No. 3 was on 7 April 1805 in Vienna.[3]

On display at the Lobkowicz Palace in Prague is a first published edition (1806) of Beethoven's Eroica, as well as other Beethoven treasures including manuscripts of the 4th and 5th symphonies, featuring Beethoven's own corrections and annotations for performance.

Who would have thought that in a city like Würzburg, a deer would cross the path you're walking on in the city park? All this rigorous hunting has drawn the wildlife into the cities.

P.S. I wasn't zoomed in because I had intended to photograph the scenery. The deer jumped in and was gone before I could react.

My sincerest thanks for your visit, fave and comment.

Edinburgh's New Town is a masterpiece of city planning, built in several stages between 1767 and around 1850. It retains much of its original neo-classical and Georgian period architecture to this day.

These facades, seen in the early morning winter light, are located on Glenfinlas Street as viewed from Ainslie Place. The rigorous order of the architecture can clearly be read, as can the sloping topography of the street in question, reflected in the stepping of the different plots in the longitudinal direction.

Pair came to the feeders today, one of my favourite birds even if, getting a photo of one with a clean beak is nigh on impossible.

A Siskin looking like it might have Trichomonosis, all my feeders will be even more rigorously scrubbed and disinfected tomorrow.

During these long months of curfew here in Italy (after 10 pm) many animals have found their way to cross even the most urbanized areas and disperde even where nobody expected to find their tracks. Even some wolves have been signalled dispersing in the Padanian lowlands. This small European green toad (Bufotes viridis) for sure is not as iconic as a wolf, anyway I like to imagine them breeding in peace and full silence in these mild nights, rigorously after 10 pm!

PS: photo taken just before 10 pm.

Maasai are the tallest people in Africa and very strong. This is due to their rich calcium diet. The famous Maasai jumping is known as 'Adamu' and carries a deeper meaning. The jumping ceremonies involve warriors engaging in repetitive jumps, accompanied by vibrant singing and chanting, which can continue for hours on end. The Maasai warriors' extraordinary jumping ability is not solely attributed to their genetics but also the outcome of rigorous training from an early age.

There are over fifty tribes of native people originally from Kenya. The Maasai are one of the few tribes that have managed to stick to most of their traditions and keep their culture alive. This didn’t come easy though. According to Maasai history the Maasai tribe is originally from north-west Kenya, north of Lake Turkana in the lower Nile Valley. Later on, they migrated south and settled in the Great Rift Valley and the Dodoma and Mount Marsabit region. They were feared for raiding cattle as far east as the Tanga Coast in Tanzania. These proficient warriors excelled in the use of shields and spears but were especially feared for throwing their clubs known as 'orinka'. Maasai warriors were known to be able to throw the orinka with expert precision across a distance of up to 100 metres.

Located in northern Burgundy, Fontenay Abbey was founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the greatest French saints, and is the oldest preserved Cistercian abbey in the world.

Classified as a French historic monument in 1862, it was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1981. It was one of the first French monuments to appear on this list, which thus distinguished the exceptional value of both the whole abbey of Fontenay as well as its natural environment.

The Fontenay abbey church is one of the oldest Cistercian churches in the world. Built between 1139 and 1147, it is also one of the rare Cistercian abbey churches from the 12th century that has survived intact to this day.

According to the will of Saint Bernard and the general chapter of the Order of Cîteaux, nothing in the church distracts the eye so that the whole being is turned towards God during daily services. This is why this building was built with great simplicity and constitutes a typical model of Burgundian Romanesque architecture: Latin cross plan, bare facade, capitals sculpted with simple foliage motifs, single row of side windows.

This simplicity hides many details and a particular attention of the building monks to harmony and symbolism, particularly with regard to proportions or the number of bays.

The choir is covered with enameled tiles from the 12th and 13th centuries. There is also a remarkable sculpted altarpiece from the 13th century, as well as a set of tombstones including that of the English bishop Ebrard of Norwich, who financed the construction of the abbey church.

The abbey church impresses with its remarkable state of conservation, its dimensions, its rigorous sobriety and its particular luminosity. There reigns an atmosphere of calm and serenity inviting admiring contemplation and meditation.

The Llandudno cable cars have been running every year since June 1969 and are renowned for being the most comprehensive passenger cable car system in Britain.

The cable cars’ structure was completely overhauled in 2006 to meet rigorous Health and Safety regulations.

The cable cars run along the Great Orme spanning a distance of one mile forty feet (1.622 km).

The Cape May Warbler male, has some of the most contrasting and beautiful colours of all warblers seen in North America.

The Cape May Warbler is known for defending its territory rigorously against all other bird species. Its main diet is the spruce budworm when it is in the north. But, interesting enough, it changes its diet to nectar and fruit when it is on its winter grounds. In this case he had a Moth!

The Municipality of Trento, together with the Mart, is creating a public artwork connected to a vast (real) urban redevelopment plan. Not your average street art, but a rigorous, non-illustrative environmental painting. This is how the Via Canestrini underpass is transformed.

The British Columbia Parliament Buildings are located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and are home to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

If you ever visit Banff or Jasper National Parks in Alberta, Canada and you enjoy moderately challenging hikes, I will let you in on a relatively well kept secret.

There are many hikes in the parks, ranging from easy one hour walks to rigorous, multi-day, rock scrambling. Most people search out the hikes around the famous lakes: Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Peyto Lake and Maligne Lake.

For me, grading a hike has all to do with what you get for your effort. I do not enjoy trudging along for three hours through the forest, to come out to one viewpoint. Those types of hikes get a 4 out of 10 from me. Then there are the really long and challenging hikes, that are best left up to the very fit or people who fancy themselves rock scramblers. I don't want to be totally worn out at the end of the day and aching for the next two.

There are hikes that would be more enjoyable and I would rate higher, except now they draw such crowds that the experience is ruined. It is difficult to feel at one with nature when you are one of two hundred on the trail.

Parker Ridge, in my opinion, is the perfect hike. You are in the Rocky Mountains, so you want to get up in the mountains and get those big views. Here is my checklist for what makes a great Rocky Mountain hike and how Parker Ridge grades out:

Views during hike and at end of trail: Awesome

Return distance: 5 km (perfect)

Hike time: 2 hours, longer for exploring along ridge (perfect)

Effort: Moderately hard work, elevation at ridge is 2260 m

Walking along the ridge (don't worry, it isn't a sharp ridge, it is more of a flat topped, steep hill), you get views of Mt Athabasca, Mt Andromeda and the Saskatchewan Glacier to the northwest; Castleguard Mountain to the west, Mt Saskatchewan to the south; Mt Stewart to the east.... well, you pretty much get awesome mountain views in every direction.

When you reach the top of the ridge, you will know that you've had a workout and it may take a few minutes to catch your breath. Then you look around at the views and it will take a few more minutes to catch your breath again! Parker Ridge is actually a fossilized reef, so you are standing on fossilized corals and sponges. Imagine standing on a mountain ridge at 2260 m elevation (7,400 ft) that was once a reef at the bottom of the ocean!

The photo view is standing on Parker Ridge, with Hilda Peak in the center, Mt Athabasca left of center and Mount Wilcox to the far right in the background.

Someone has mailed me and asked me to post full sized shots of the collage I put on yesterday. So here they are.

Here, the tissue is not from a corticioid fungus, it is tissue taken from the very edge of a gill of a small 'mushroom' - a Mycena species. Again, we took the sample and squashed it, and stained it in a drop of 'Cotton Blue'. The pointed structures are cheilocystidia (relatively large cells found on the gill edge of basidiomycetes).

Unfortunately, I cannot now recall the species, (I took the shot some time ago) but we did know after we'd keyed it out. Note to self: must be more rigorous in recording!!!

In 1958 Stella started his pivotal “black paintings,” featuring patterns of three-inch wide parallel stripes determined by the overall canvas shape. He followed this rigorous deductive logic throughout the 1960s, and in 1967, while in Emma Lake Saskatchewan, initiated his Protactor series. While more colourful and elaborate than his earlier monochromatic paintings, the contour of the surface nevertheless defines the arrangement of the bands within. The title refers to Firuzabad in southwest Iran a town constructed between the third and seventh centuries on a circular plan with three ringed walls.

Europe, Netherlands, Rotterdam, Centre, Pompenburg, Luchtsingel, Roundabout, Trampoline (uncut)

The Luchtsingel and the adjacent Schieblock projects are interesting strategies that counteract the detrimental effects that the combination of modernist urban planning - with its rigorous segregation of work, living and commercial functions - and chronic high levels of vacancy of office buildings have on the liveability and vitality of the city centre.

Shown here is the Roundabput of the Luchtsingel. It offers a circuit of elevated walkways that pass through the Schieblock, crosses major roads and a railroad to offer the pedestrian new ways to discover the city, help them to avoid the anonymous and sometimes unsafe existing urban ground level and realizing a connection between emerging cultural hotspots in the Rotterdam Central and Noord areas. Funding: the municipality of Rotterdam and crowdsourcing / crowdfunding. For 25 € people could and can buy planks on which the name of the buyer is printed.

In the BG is the bridge that leads to the platform of the former Hofplein railway station. It crosses the 4 tracks of the Rotterdam-Dordecht railway mainline.

A male kōlea in his breeding plumage tuxedo is about two weeks from migration. Kōlea migrate from Hawaii to Alaska for a five-month breeding season. The trip spans over approximately 3,000 miles of open ocean requiring a rigorous, energy intensive effort of 3 to 4 days and nights of nonstop flight at elevation ranging from 3,000 to 16,000 feet. A superb navigator with territorial fidelity, kōlea use the stars and the earth’s magnetic field to find their way over the featureless ocean to the same small patch of territory every year. They may use the earth’s magnetic field visually with the magnetoreception molecules of cryptochrome in their retina.

The physiological changes in migrating shorebirds, like this male kōlea, are astonishing. The necessity of increasing fat load for the sustained energy demands of long-distance migration has been compared to, in terms of percentage body fat, larding up to morbid obesity in humans. The surge in heart and lung capacity and increase in pectoral flight muscle are driven by hormonal changes (without the drudgery of exercise!). This one winters in Hawaii. Some will migrate north from the southern hemisphere. Pacific golden plover, kōlea, Pluvialis fulva.

Up on Pilot Mountain, a short but rigorous hike with beautiful views of the piedmont as well as of the cliffs of the pinnacle.

A typical English Cottage Garden in Norfolk, England. The cottage garden is a distinct style that uses informal design, traditional materials, dense plantings, and a mixture of ornamental and edible plants. English in origin, it depends on grace and charm rather than grandeur and formal structure. Homely and functional gardens connected to cottages go back centuries, but their stylized reinvention occurred in 1870s England, as a reaction to the more structured, rigorously maintained estate gardens with their formal designs and mass plantings of greenhouse annuals.

. . . I am not sure which bird my camera actually focused on, probably the male closest to the center of the photo? This group was close enough together that it passed my rigorous pre-posting inspection! I would much rather be sneaking up on a Snowy Owl, to tell the truth!

🇬🇧 This photograph caught my attention because it seems to summarize the experience of visiting Le forme della bellezza. A long corridor lined with Robert Mapplethorpe’s images guides the visitor toward a bright opening at the far end, where a solitary figure appears almost suspended between shadow and light.

I was drawn to the symbolism of the scene. Along the walls are bodies, portraits and studies of form that have defined Mapplethorpe’s artistic legacy. Each photograph invites us to pause, observe and reflect. Yet the perspective naturally pulls the eye forward, as if beauty were not a destination but a journey.

The lone visitor at the end of the corridor became an essential part of the composition. She transforms the exhibition space into a narrative, reminding us that every work of art only truly comes alive when someone stands before it. The photographs remain the same; the experience changes with each person who walks among them.

I also enjoyed the contrast between the rigorous geometry of the exhibition layout and the almost cinematic atmosphere created by the distant silhouette. It feels like the final frame of a story—or perhaps the beginning of another.

Ogni fotografia invita a fermarsi, osservare e riflettere.

As my location list grows, Phill is always sure to come-up with another hidden gem that wasn't even close to being on my list of locations. So another near 2 hour drive into deepest darkest (well not till about 10pm) Somerset. The hill up the spot was a long and arduous trek with a heavy camera backpack and extras, good idea to take a couple of camp chairs and the coffee making kit. This was just a set-up shot for another creation but I liked the simplicity and the colour of the sky so it just made it though my very un-rigorous vetting process.

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C5%8D-ji:

Tō-ji Temple (東寺, Tō-ji, "East Temple"), also known as Kyō-ō-gokoku-ji (教王護国寺, The Temple for the Defense of the Nation by Means of the King of Doctrines) is a Shingon Buddhist temple in the Minami-ku ward of Kyoto, Japan.

Founded in 796, it was one of the only three Buddhist temples allowed in the city at the time it became the capital of Japan. As such it has a long history, housing treasures and documents from the early Heian period and the Tang dynasty, and with buildings in its complex covering the Kamakura, Muromachi, Momoyama, and Edo periods. Five of these buildings have been designated National Treasures in two different categories: the Lotus Flower Gate (rengemon), the Miei Hall (mieidō), the Golden Hall (kondō) and the five-storied Pagoda (gojūnotō) (temple buildings) and the Kanchiin Guest Hall (kanchiin kyakuden) (residences).

Tō-ji was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.

The five-storied Pagoda (五重塔, gojūnotō) of Tō-ji dates from 1643 (Edo period), when it was rebuilt by order of the third Tokugawa Shōgun, Iemitsu. The original pagoda was built in the 9th century, but it was destroyed and rebuilt four times before reaching its current state. It was designated a National Treasure in 1952.

The pagoda stands 54.8 meters (180 feet) high, and is the tallest wooden tower in Japan. Entrance into the pagoda itself is permitted only on special occasions, but it is usually open and the interior can be seen from the outside. It houses relics, sculptures, and paintings. At ground level, there are statues of four Buddhas facing different directions.

The Kondo or Golden Hall is the main hall of the temple and contains a statue of Yakushi from 1603.

The Miedo is dedicated to Kobo Daishi, also called Kukai, the temple's founder. It stands on the location of his original residence. The hall is opened on the 21st of each month when a memorial service is held for Kukai.

The grounds feature a garden and pond, in which turtles and koi swim. The grounds also house an academically rigorous private school, Rakunan, from which many students are sent to elite universities.

A little warmth (...?)

Another very cold night passed for the birds. Despite his metabolism which allows him to pass through our rigorous winters, this nuthatch seem to enjoy the morning sun. He stayed perched a few minutes to savor the soft rays of the sun. At least, that's what I thought! Freezing in my hiding place, having only a narrow opening to watch the scene, I realized that this was not what I thought. In fact, this nuthatch was observing the behavior of two Hairy Woodpeckers that were bickering.

In creating this digital composition, I wanted to explore the tension between our urban constructions and the cosmic immensity that hangs above us each night. Starting with a photograph of a modern building in Toulouse whose rigorous geometry struck me, I imagined this edifice opening like a curtain onto the celestial spectacle.

The black and white treatment allowed me to unify these two distinct realities - human architecture and the lunar body - into the same visual language where only forms, textures, and light matter. I deliberately accentuated the perfect symmetry to create this sensation of precarious balance between order and chaos, between the constructed and the uncontrollable.

What particularly interested me in this fusion was playing with scales and perceptions: how a building, imposing at our human scale, can suddenly seem minuscule against a crescent moon which, despite its modest apparent size in our sky, actually represents an immense celestial body.

Through this creation, I sought to evoke that vertiginous sensation we sometimes feel when, walking through our gridded and planned cities, we suddenly look up at the night sky and become aware of our tiny place in the universe. It's this collision between our everyday world and the cosmic infinite, between the urban grid and the natural curve of the moon, that I wanted to capture in this image.

I've photographed this super-sized '5' at the Make Architects Broadgate building before so I was surprised to see recently that they've installed a screen within the number. I imagine this will look quite good at dusk as it casts coloured light on its surroundings.

For anyone that has any shots of this building or any others by MAKE Architects it would be great if you could join the group I started for their work and add your shots : www.flickr.com/groups/1439695@N24/

From MAKE Architects website : "Our world-class headquarters for financial services firm UBS have raised the bar for office and workplace design. We worked with developer British Land to design a functional, pragmatic space that allows UBS to consolidate its London workforce for the first time. The result – a 13-storey ‘groundscraper’ – is visually innovative and represents a powerful vote of confidence in the City. Furthermore, it’s become a catalyst for regeneration in the Broadgate area.

We based our bold design on the form of a perfectly machined metal object – a symbol of the building’s internal function. The main facade is primarily constructed from stainless steel, which unifies the surface, establishes a strong presence, and reflects its bespoke nature and single occupier. This sense of robustness is rigorously carried through to the detailing, materiality and finishes, reflecting an architectural language of quality and precision. Inside, an ultra-rational arrangement of the structure and cores provides four large trading floors that can accommodate up to 3,000 desks, plus seven levels of offices."
