Boynton Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 68,217 at the 2010 census. In 2019, the city had an estimated population of 78,679 according to the University of Florida, Bureau of Economic and Business Research. Boynton Beach is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people at the 2015 census.

In 1894, two years before Henry Morrison Flagler built his railroad, a former American Civil War major named Nathan Boynton first set eyes on the area that now bears his name. Boynton hailed from Port Huron, Michigan. He was so impressed by the natural beauty of the year-round sunshine and pristine beaches, he built the famous Boynton Hotel, where he also spent winters with his family. The first settlers, whom Boynton had brought along from Michigan, soon realized that many fruits and vegetables thrived in the fertile climate. Pineapples, tomatoes, mangoes, and citrus fruit were packed in crates and shipped by the ton on the newly built Florida East Coast Railroad to satisfy the appetites of hungry Americans across the country. Major Boynton died on May 27, 1911 in Port Huron, but the hotel lasted until 1925.

Boynton Beach was founded on September 26, 1898 when Byrd Spilman Dewey and her husband Fred S. Dewey filed the original plat in the Dade County courthouse for the Town of Boynton. The town was incorporated in 1920 as the Town of Boynton. The name "Boynton Beach" was first used by a community that broke off from the Town of Boynton in 1931. In 1939, that community changed its name to "Ocean Ridge" while The Town of Boynton took the name "Boynton Beach" in 1941.

In 1926, the Seaboard Air Line Railway entered what was then simply Boynton, spurring land development a mile inland near the Seaboard station, including the town's first planned subdivision, Lake Boynton Estates. As land became more valuable, areas along the Intracoastal Waterway and the Federal Highway in Boynton also saw housing developments. To the west, many dairies were founded so that the Boynton area became the main milk supplier for Palm Beach County. By the 1970s, the dairies were no longer profitable and these lands too were converted to housing developments.

Boynton Beach Oceanfront Park is located just north of the original Boynton Hotel site. In 1921, the Town of Boynton acquired the beach site from Lewis S. Howe by eminent domain for park and recreation purposes. The beach casino was built in 1928 and featured a large dining hall, locker rooms and showers and residents used the casino for parties and social gatherings. The casino was demolished in 1967 and the property remained part of the beach park.

From the 1920s to today, Boynton Beach Oceanfront Park has been popular with residents and visitors alike. In the mid-1990s, the park underwent a major renovation during which the boardwalk was rebuilt out of recycled plastic. Boynton Beach's Oceanfront Park was voted the best family beach in Palm Beach County by The Palm Beach Post in 2001. In 2011 the boardwalk was renovated again, replacing the plastic with ipe (pronounced ee-pay) wood (commonly known as Brazilian walnut). In 2012 improvements were made to the buildings along the boardwalk, including total refurbishment of the restrooms.

Hurricane Wilma struck Boynton Beach on October 24, 2005, causing widespread damage to homes and businesses. In 2006, the city government authorized the demolition of the historic Seaboard rail station, which had survived intact in private hands since passenger service to the station halted in 1971.

Clewiston is a city in Hendry County, Florida, United States. Its location is on the Atlantic coastal plain. The population was 7,155 at the 2010 census, up from 6,460 at the 2000 census. The estimated population in 2015 was 7,505. The city is located on the south bank of Lake Okeechobee, and the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail passes through the edge of the city.

The city is home to the Clewiston Museum and the Dixie Crystal Theatre. The area has been home to Seminole tribe members and sugar plantations. The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Seminole Indian Museum is located 32 miles south of the city.

The area beside Lake Okeechobee was once used as a fishing camp by the Seminole tribe. The first permanent settlement began in 1920 when John O'Brien of Philadelphia and Alonzo Clewis of Tampa purchased a large tract of land to establish a town. They commissioned a town plan and built the Moore Haven & Clewiston Railroad to connect the community to the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad at Moore Haven. Incorporated as a city in 1925, Clewiston would become noted for its sport fishing, particularly of largemouth bass.

Large sugar plantations were established around Lake Okeechobee. By the 1950s and 1960s, the cultivation of citrus, vegetables and cattle were also important to the economy. The US Sugar Corporation, however, remained the dominant manufacturer in Clewiston, which became known as "America's Sweetest Town". On June 24, 2008, Governor Charlie Crist announced that the state of Florida had arranged to buy for $1.75 billion the company's 187,000 acres (76,000 ha), including the refinery in Clewiston. On November 11, the plan was scaled back to $1.34 billion for 181,000 acres (73,000 ha) of farmland, no longer including the mill, citrus processing facilities, and other assets. This would allow the company to remain in business and leave open the possibility of preserving its 1,700 jobs.

Over the next seven crop cycles, the farmland would be leased back from the state to US Sugar for $60 million. It would then be converted into reservoirs and water-filtering areas as part of the ongoing restoration of the Everglades ecosystem.

Clewiston is located in the northeast corner of Hendry County at 26°45′12″N 80°56′01″W, on the southwestern shore of Lake Okeechobee. It is part of the Florida Heartland region.

U.S. Route 27 passes through the center of Clewiston, leading west then north 15 miles (24 km) to Moore Haven, and southeast 16 miles (26 km) to South Bay. Florida State Road 80 runs with US 27 through Clewiston but leads west 31 miles (50 km) to LaBelle, the Hendry County seat.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Clewiston has a total area of 4.7 square miles (12.2 km2), of which 0.027 square miles (0.07 km2), or 0.54%, are water.

A vibrant street view in Asakusa, Tokyo, showcasing the multi-story "AMUSE" building, a pachinko and slot parlor, adorned with red and white patterns, banners, and digital screens. Pedestrians walk along the street, with bicycles parked nearby, and other prominent buildings like UNIQLO and Don Quijote visible in the background.

In the mid-1920s, a series of unfortunate events befell the town of Boynton. Plans for a new hotel were abandoned by Addison Mizner and his brother Wilson who eventually built the Cloister Inn in Boca Raton. in 1925, citrus canker was discovered in the town’s orange groves which led to their destruction. The town also began to suffer from severe financial problems resulting in the bank refusing to honor checks signed by the City Clerk and salaries for municipal staff being cut by up to 50%. The Florida Land Boom was beginning to wane at this time and two hurricanes in 1926 and 1928, caused extensive damage which added to the town’s problems. As the Depression hit, Boynton’s financial problems continued to mount and, in 1929, the Bank of Boynton failed.

Concerned residents from the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway were worried about the debt and informed the town they wished to separate from Boynton and start a new municipality. When bond holders began to press for payment on nearly $1 million of indebtedness, Boynton and the eastside residents reached an agreement whereby, upon assumption of half of the debt, a new municipality would be established on the east side of the waterway. The agreement was finalized in on April 17, 1931 with the formation of Boynton on the west side of the canal, and Boynton Beach on the east. In 1939, the Town of Boynton Beach changed its name to Ocean Ridge and, within two years, the Town of Boynton changed its name to the Town of Boynton Beach.

Before a bridge was built over the East Coast Canal (now the Intracoastal Waterway), crossings were made by means of a hand-operated lighter (barge) located at Ocean Avenue. Once on board, passengers would haul on a chain to pull the lighter to the other side.

The first bridge was built over the canal at Ocean Avenue in 1911. The wooden swing bridge was operated by a crank in the center section, pushed by the bridge-tender walking in a circle until it swung open. In 1924, the bridge-tenders were Wilbur and Jessie Forrey. Jessie would crank the bridge while Wilbur lowered a chain across the canal and collected the toll.

Construction of a new bridge began in 1935. The bridge was constructed from steel and was operated with a Scherzer rolling lift bascule, which was an unusual movable span found in only two other bridges in Florida. The span was designed by William Scherzer of Chicago and built by the Nashville Bridge Company. As the bridge was financed with Depression era relief funds given by the Federal Government, the design of the bridge was very plain3. The bridge was 121 feet long, 31 feet wide and carried two narrow lanes of traffic with sidewalks on each side.

In 1970, project development started for the construction of a new bridge at Boynton Beach Boulevard; however, a property owner who would have been impacted by the bridge relocation filed suit and the resulting arbitration ruled in his favor. The project was put on hold for several years and then two proposals were studied. The first was to relocate the new bridge to Boynton Beach Boulevard and the second was to replace the bridge on Ocean Avenue. In 1994, the permit for the Boynton Beach Boulevard bridge was rejected which left the Ocean Avenue proposal as the only option,

Construction of the new bridge started in November 1998 and the project was completed in March, 2001.

Lake Worth Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States, which takes its name from the body of water along its eastern border known as the Lake Worth Lagoon. The lake itself was named for General William J. Worth, who led U.S. forces during the last part of the Second Seminole War. As of 2010, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau was 34,910. It is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people in 2015.

Lake Worth Beach was incorporated as the "Town of Lake Worth" in June 1913. Many of the first residents were farmers from other parts of the American south and mid-west, looking to benefit from the growing winter vegetable market of the time. The city benefited with the rest of south Florida during the Florida land boom of the 1920s. A wooden automobile traffic bridge over Lake Worth was completed in 1919. The first casino and municipal beach complex was completed shortly thereafter. The 1920s also saw the completion of the Gulf Stream Hotel, now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The city was severely damaged in the 1928 hurricane, toppling the bell tower on the elementary school (today the City Hall Annex) and destroying the beachfront casino and automobile bridge over Lake Worth. This led to a severe economic decline within the community, during the Great Depression. Things were so dire in the city in the 1930s, that President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration built a striking, moorish-styled "City Gymnasium" on the corner of Lake Avenue and Dixie Highway. The building today serves as City Hall.

William A. Boutwell, who ran the Boutwell Dairy from 1927 to 1956, is credited with inventing half & half creamer; the dairy later merged with Alfar Creamery and then T.G. Lee, who distributed the product more widely until it became an American diner staple.

Development started again after World War II with many modest pensioners, especially from Quebec, Finland, and eventually Germany, moving to the city and building 1,000-square-foot (93 m2) cottages. These new immigrants brought their industrious nature with them as well as their native customs, restaurants, shops, and churches and for decades the town flourished. To this day, one can find an abundance of beer halls, chocolatiers, Bavarian delicatessens, and Lutheran churches, which stand out in the semitropical urban sprawl of South Florida.

The South Florida construction boom brought a new wave of immigrants in the past few decades. Central Americans have added a Hispanic aspect to Lake Worth's culture. Included in the 1980s immigration were many Guatemalan-Mayans who consider themselves indigenous people, rather than "Hispanic" or "Latino" and some may not speak Spanish. They mostly converse in Mam, Q'anjob'al, or any one of 22 existing Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala. Adding to the racial and linguistic mix of the city is a large Haitian population, speaking Haitian Creole and French.

During a short period of neglect and decline in the 1980s and 1990s, Lake Worth, in the words of then-city commissioner Dennis Dorsey, "had become known as the skin-flick capital of the country." The venue now known as the Lake Worth Playhouse was the Playtoy, and was well known in Palm Beach County as the theater that showed x-rated movies; Deep Throat was shown there, motivating a police raid.

The downtown area has seen a huge resurgence in interest and now sports an array of art galleries, sidewalk cafés and night clubs. Once moribund property values have soared. The city's main street, Lake Avenue, contains some of the oldest commercial structures in South Florida, including the Art Deco Lake Worth Playhouse.

The city was hit especially hard by Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma in 2004 and 2005. The fishing pier was quite damaged but was repaired (with the help of FEMA) and reopened in May 2009. The pier is currently open to the public with entry fees of $1 per adult sightseer, and $3 per adult fisherman. The city's public swimming pool has been restored, and besides serving to instruct Palm Beach County residents in swimming and water safety, hosts water-sport competitions. The pier is home to a tide gauge with a sporadic history, showing an above average rate of sea level rise.

In 2015, the city was accused of asking for business licenses from surrounding churches.

In 2019 a ballot initiative to change the name of the city to Lake Worth Beach passed with a narrow margin. The city states that the name change "will be implemented slowly".

MiMo or Miami Modern is the name coined by Randall Robinson and Teri D’Amico to describe the architecture that flourished in South Florida from 1945 until the late 1960s.

In their words:

MiMo is not a single style, but rather a confluence that includes the world-renowned Resort glamour of Morris Lapidus, the sublime Subtropical Modernism of Igor B. Polevitzky, and the flamboyant Latin infusion of Enrique Gutierrez, the architect of one of the Southland’s Modernist masterpiece, the Bacardi USA building. The common denominator is a time — the heady decades after the war — and a place — the subtropical environs of South Florida.

Miami Modern is further classified into two distinct strains, Resort MiMo and Subtropical Modernism. The visual “lineage” for both the resort and subtropical versions of Miami Modern can be traced to Miami’s emerging modern movement beginning in the 1930s. Local architects adapted elements of the International, 19 Streamline Moderne and Art Deco styles in their versions of contemporary buildings. Resort MiMo of the 1950s is a product of the experimentations. best represented by the vivid scenographic expressions of Miami Beach architects.

Resort MiMo is associated with the 1950s and 1960s and the influences of Hollywood set design, automobile styling, military jets and the space race. The American fascination with Futurism was a pervasive influence in the designs of Resort MiMo. It was realized in architectural form by acute angles, boomerangs and trapezoidal forms.

Subtropical Modernism was a strain of the modern movement that recognized the needs of a year-round population rather than solely the demands of the winter-resort guests. As a result, designers addressed the humidity and heat of summer by making accommodations for breezy corridors, covered galleries and shady courtyards. Subtropical Modernism also employed elements associated with the International Style of architecture that included glass walls and low-slung lines, flat roofs and wide eaves and free-flowing interior spaces. Many of the motels along Biscayne Boulevard are impressive examples of Resort Miami Modernism.

Rosemary Square (formerly CityPlace) is an upscale lifestyle center in downtown West Palm Beach, Florida, along South Rosemary Avenue. Considered a New Urbanist mixed-use development, Rosemary Square is architecturally composed of the Mediterranean and Venetian elements. The 600,000-square-foot (56,000 m2)-center contains more than 60 restaurants and stores, as well as rental apartments, condos, and offices.

Opening in October 2000, the property, which constitutes several city blocks, is primarily credited for West Palm Beach's urban renaissance, which had previously been notorious for crime, poverty, and vacant and dilapidated businesses and houses.

AMC Parisian 20 and IMAX, LA Fitness, and Publix are the center's anchors. The fourth anchor was Macy's which closed in 2017. Hotspots include Cheesecake Factory, Brio Tuscan Grille, Sloan's Ice Cream, and Starbucks. Apart from shopping, dining, and cinema, the center is now at the forefront of West Palm Beach's entertainment complementing establishments located on nearby Clematis Street.

The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts and Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts are located within walking distance to Rosemary Square, as is the Palm Beach County Convention Center. An early-century trolleybus circles downtown between Rosemary Square and Clematis.

CityPlace opened to the public on October 27, 2000, with 31 stores and 1 restaurant opening during the first weekend. Many other stores and restaurants were expected to open by mid-December, bringing the total number of stores and restaurants to about 70. The original anchors for CityPlace were Barnes & Noble, Macy's, Muvico Parisian 20, and IMAX theater. Wild Oats Markets was also planned as an original anchor. However, financial problems halted construction in 2000. CityPlace filed suit to terminate their lease, with both parties settling a few weeks later. On August 20, 2001, Wild Oats Markets was replaced by Publix as an anchor, which opened in January 2002.

Early on, CityPlace sought to attract many high-end stores as tenants, though emphasis shifted to home furnishings during the housing bubble. By the Great Recession, the focus turned heavily toward dining and entertainment establishments becoming tenants.

In January 2017, Macy's closed 68 of its stores across the United States, including its location at CityPlace. The former Macy's building is temporarily housing Downton Abbey: The Exhibition. Related Companies submitted plans for and gained approval from the city commission in November 2018 for transforming the building into a 21-story apartment building, which would add 300-400 new residential units to CityPlace.

As part of a re-imaging effort, CityPlace was renamed "Rosemary Square" in April 2019. Related Companies intends to invest almost $550 million in the construction of new restaurants, a new mixed-use luxury residential tower, and a new hotel, as well as an office tower containing 300,000 sq ft (28,000 m2) of space. Some asphalt roads were replaced with gray and white pavers and converted into pedestrian walking areas.

The shopping center is the epitome of a New Urbanist mixed-use development. Most of its architecture is West European-inspired, with mainly Mediterranean and Venetian elements.

However, the CityPlace Tower constructed in 2007, and associated with the original property, is postmodern. This tower has been downtown West Palm Beach's first office development in over twenty years. Later phases of CityPlace, including Montecito Palm Beach (formerly called The Mark at CityPlace) and CityPlace South Tower, retain loyalty to the original development's architecture. Excluding these more recent additions, Rosemary Square proper contains 600 private residences.

The Harriet Himmel Theater, a former Methodist church, is located at the center of Rosemary Square. Built in 1926 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, it has undergone a six-million-dollar restoration and serves today as a cultural center. Surrounding squares, arcades, and promenades feature 2,000-square-foot (190 m2) water fountains and lush landscaping.
