The Fulling Mill across the River Alre dates from the 13th century. It is now a private house and it was saved from dereliction in 1951 when it was renovated and the now beautiful garden laid out. It had become derelict having fallen into disuse in the 19th century when the cloth industry established large mills to undertake an increasingly mechanised process taking all of the business from established local mills.

The fulling of cloth is a process to tighten and shrink the cloth into a closely woven product. In early times the pressing and kneading was done by human feet, in shallow streams, using fullers earth. By medieval times water power was being used to drive hammers to do the work once done by human feet. The water mills constructed for this purposes were known as fulling mills and for centuries the surrounding area resounded to the hammering of the fulling stocks as they prepared the cloth.

You'll need sharp eyes to catch sight of an American Bittern. This streaky, brown and buff heron can materialize among the reeds, and disappear as quickly, especially when striking a concealment pose with neck stretched and bill pointed skyward. These stealthy carnivores stand motionless amid tall marsh vegetation, or patiently stalk fish, frogs, and insects. They are at their most noticeable in spring, when the marshes resound with their odd booming calls that sounds like the gulps of a thirsty giant.

Looking forward, as if in flight, the figure of a woman, a mother, with a sword in her hands, raises her sons to fight the enemy. Against the background of the sky, she looks like a bird soaring high.Once at the foot of the "Motherland", you fully understand how huge it is: the height of the woman's figure is 52 meters, which corresponds to the height of a person increased by 30 times. At the same time, the total height of the Motherland is 85 meters to the highest point - the tip of the sword..............................

The distinctive warning call of the Curlew,our largest wading bird, resounds around the Northern Uplands of the uk in spring & early summer where they return each year to breed

Normally a very wary bird but when they have young chicks nearby they can be quite bold. This one approached just to within a few yards of me,obviously letting me know its young family was nearby.

Needless to say I heeded the warning and left it in peace.

Green frogs are undoubtedly one of the most frequently observed amphibians and best known to the general public. In spring and summer, their song resounds near water points, day and night. During the day, green frogs bask in the sun on the shore, where they can jump into the water to take refuge in case of danger. The well-developed webs of the hind legs make them excellent swimmers. The European green frogs are a group of several closely related species and varieties, of which only two are native: the Lessona Frog, Pelophylax lessonae Camerano 1882, and the Green Frog proper, Pelophylax esculentus Linnaeus 1758. The Frog de Lessona is a species in its own right, while the Green Frog is a hybrid species, resulting from the cross between the Lessona's Frog and the Common Frog, Pelophylax ridibunda Pallas 1771, originally an exotic species. It was indeed introduced in the 20th century in several regions of Switzerland.

In 1825 Carl Ludwig Blume (1796-1862), deputy director of the Kebun Raya, the 'Great Garden' of Bogor/Buitenzorg on Java, had already given a rather sparse and dry description of this pretty orchid. Eleven years later he waxes considerably more enthusiastic in the journal Rumphia, named of course for great Georg Eberhard Rumphius (1628-1702), the blind botanist of Ambon. Now in 1836 it has become one of the most beautiful orchids of Java with flowers colored intensely lilac.

By this time Blume had been forced for reasons of health to return to Holland, where he became director of the Rijksherbarium (then at Brussels and still part of The Netherlands, later moved to Leiden and today subsumed into famous Naturalis). Perhaps he'd become homesick for the Bright Colors of the East Indies and allows that to resound in his description.

Blume, by the way, was an arrogant man who did not eschew colorful words in his scholarly and administrative duties ( see my www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/6683623619/in/photolis...).

 

Common Goldeneye (female)

 

The Common Goldeneye is a chunky little sea duck — the tribe Mergini. In flight its wings make a soft whistling sound, giving rise to its specific name clangula, from the Latin clangere ‘to resound’ or ‘clang’! Their habitat includes forested areas bordering lakes, streams and wetlands.

 

This goldeneye’s diet is varied throughout the year but is mainly animal; aquatic invertebrates (molluscs, crustaceans, worms, insects and their larvae), amphibians, small fish and their spawn. Less than a quarter of it is plant matter. By placing some feed in a trough with stones, the foraging can help to keep bills in good order.

 

As a breeding rarity in the UK, this species is Amber-listed here.

 

Goldeneye are popular in collections in Europe and North America. Many find the breeding success to be better if several pairs are kept together. The drakes seem to enjoy showing off to impress their ducks and the display is very interesting to watch. Wild birds typically gather in small winter courting parties. The resulting pair bonds remain strong until mid-incubation.

Deep in the forest the King silently smiles

far from his homeland; thousands of miles

yet still in this forest he is undoubtedly King

as wise as he's stronger than most every thing

 

I linger; I long for a meeting with him

proud and majestic through thick and thin

in the quiet of the forest; I click on a whim

he does not stir from where he lays; I am nothing to him

 

The silence is eerie then he purrs like a kitten

his fur is so fluffy like a warm Winter mitten

but beneath his soft façade lies the heart of a lion

the King of the jungle on whom all can rely on

 

There are many females surrounding him aware

that eyes are upon him and they start to stare

perhaps they are jealous or perhaps inwardly laugh

at this girl with her camera craning her neck like a giraffe

 

I stay awhile longer and was happy to see

that the King and his harem look contented to me

in front of me I spot that someone hangs out of their car window

do they not realise these cats can strike fast and cut them like Zorro

 

The moment passed quickly and I breathed a sigh of relief

that the King did not roar but yawned and bared sharp teeth

the foolishness of us humans is no surprise to him at all

he knows he could maim us; though he looks tame and could maul

 

Even a domestic cat could rip our faces to shreds

if we tease them or rile them or forget they're not fed

so the moral of this story is to be always kind

and the King will shrug his shoulders; go to sleep and not mind

 

After all we're the ones who pay handsomely

whereas the King and his subjects can see us for free

so who is the wisest; us humans or the lions

well the King knows the answer if we ignore all the signs

 

Up ahead the Safari jeeps are heading for home

so we bid the King goodbye and leave him to roam

and tonight I will dream of Tarzan and I will be Jane

as the Lion King of the Jungle will be at home ...

An American Bittern catches a frog at a swamp inside the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in Seneca Falls, upstate New York.

The American bittern is a species of wading bird in the heron family. It has a Nearctic distribution, breeding in Canada and the northern and central parts of the United States, and wintering in the U.S. Gulf Coast states, all of Florida into the Everglades, the Caribbean islands and parts of Central America (Source: Wikipedia).

This duck organizes the chaotic sounds in the spring-concert that resounds everywhere at the moment.

This is a bird I see regularly in Scotland from where most of my siskin pics are sourced.

 

They were once regulars along with the redpolls in our English garden. Then abut 10 years or more since they suddenly stopped coming.

 

This year however they are back in force. Numbers briefly dropped whilst we were in Scotland, but once again the garden resounds to their noisy chattering.

 

I have counted at least 15 this week, buy numbers I am sure are much higher.

 

I expect they will feature in my feed for sometime.

 

Although numbers have dropped to around 10 it's great to still have these beauties in the garden

What do you call an overcast when it's below your feet? This is a situation that occurs quite often here in the Blue Ridge. The drive up was not just foggy, but also dark... quite foreboding in terms of my expectations, and yet, beauty was there to be revealed from my perch at Rough Ridge. Clouds like these seem so much like ocean billows where the mountain tops poke through like islands... it reminded of the hymn It is Well with My Soul, which seems timely given the upset of late with our nation and with others around the world. A little lesson concerning this encouraging song for those who do not know: Horatio Spafford was a successful Chicago lawyer who had invested in property throughout the city... already devastated by the death of his two-year-old son, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 left him in financial ruin. While the economic downturn of 1873 made matters worse for him, he decided to go through with plans he and his family made to travel Europe. At the last minute, he sent his family ahead of him, as he was delayed with concerns of zoning problems after the fire. While crossing the Atlantic aboard the SS Ville du Havre, the ship sank rapidly after a collision with another vessel, the Loch Earn, and all four of Spafford's daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone …". Shortly afterward, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these astounding words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died:

"Undercast" seems descriptive of a general mood of late... perhaps understanding that though times may be seemingly perilous, even so, it is well with my soul. Just so you know, Horatio Stafford and his wife went on to forge extraordinary lives in trying times... so should we all.

I've been going through my Rainier images, and decided that I couldn't wait to post this one. Quiet, moody landscapes speak to the heart of me. Today, One Billion Rising in Second Life invites YOU to rise with ONE voice in an important Campaign of unity, courage, perseverance and love. Through the eye of your lens, we encourage you to capture the spirit of this cause, either through the perspective of one suffering at the hands of or rising/overcoming the suffering to live again. This distinction is significant to the purpose of this Campaign and together your voices with resound aloud with each image received as:

 

I Rise! Is the heart, soul and foundation of the mass call to action of the One Billion Rising Revolutionary Campaign, founded on February 14, 2012. To best understand the significance of this monumental show of solidarity, the description below is via the website:

 

"One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence) in human history. (The reality that): 1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Every February, we rise – in countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. [Titled after one of my very favorite songs by one of my very favorite artists, Fiona Apple. This entire image ended up being a bit of an ode to her, it would seem.

 

It is officially my favorite season of the year, and my birthday was just a little over a week ago--I am determined that from this time forward, things are going to start going my way. I can feel the winds of change blowing, and I feel in my bones that they're changing for the better.

 

I spent the day with one of my very favorite people, Austin, and we drove around looking for a location, got lost and stopped in a random field to shoot this, explored a rusted out bus in the middle of a forest, and closed the evening with delicious pho for dinner. We also reminded ourselves what it's like to spend hours out in the cold all to get the shot. I am starting to feel myself again.]

As the evening call for prayers from Srinagar’s Hazratbal mosque resounds over the Dal Lake, Ajaz walks through one of the city’s many graveyards. The young man in worn-out jeans and a body-hugging T-shirt swaggers past unkempt tombstones, counting friends and family that are buried there—all 21 of them. He tells me how he can still see the smiling face of Mushtaq, who was his senior at school, and who would have been 27 this year. He tells me about another friend, Javed, who was his parents’ only son. The day he died, he was wearing Ajaz’s clothes

 

Javed was 23 and had spent the night at his house. Ajaz remembers that 6 hours after his death, when they took his body for burial, blood was still oozing from his bullet wounds.

 

Every epitaph here tells a story—the tragic story of a generation lost. Ajaz lingers for a bit, staring glassy-eyed into the distance, till he eventually snaps out of it. “Enough of this tragedy, let’s go have some fun.”

 

Ajaz is part of Kashmir’s “lost generation”, an entire generation of youth that has grown up in a Kashmir ravaged by 20 years of turmoil. They are an age group with no real ambitions or motivations, just a preoccupation with survival. Ajaz spends his days at 8 Ball, a smoky snooker den at Lal Chowk in the city centre. The parlour is inhabited by 15- to 20-year-olds. And this is their home turf, a place where they escape the tear gas and rubber bullets of the old city—to gamble and smoke all too many cigarettes. Some of the older boys such as Ajaz sometimes walk to the football ground nearby to show off their hairstyles, their sunglasses, their cigarettes, their tattoos and, sometimes, even their girls.

 

At the parlour, Ajaz lights up a little block of hashish and watches it crumble into his palm. Sajid, a boy with hard cheekbones and a black jacket with a woven trim, empties tobacco from a cigarette with his long fingers. He looks slightly mad for some reason.

 

Look at these boys closely and there’s a sense of overgrown teenage urgency and escape, the sense that all these details—the parting of the hair, the length of the fingernails, the jacket trim, the cigarette grip—matter greatly.

 

“Smoking up is haram (sin). But I can’t go through a day without rolling one. It helps us forget,” Ajaz tells me as Sajid grunts in approval.

 

Ajaz’s cellphone rings with a polyphonic rendition of a song from the Hindi movie Ghajini. It’s his girlfriend Farhana. They flirt awkwardly on the phone, the conversation no different than one two lovers would have in a Mumbai college.

 

This is the signal to step out. Ajaz first stops at Broadway Cinema, a bombed out theatre, the upper floors of which have now been converted into a bar. A couple of beer cans are procured and cigarette cartons are refilled. Ajaz then picks up Farhana from a pre-decided spot.

 

Once all of us are in an autorickshaw, Farhana lets Ajaz light her cigarette. She is dressed modestly in a salwar-kameez but she admits to wearing only jeans at home. “I want to go to Mumbai or Delhi, so that I can wear a skirt and be free—just like in the movies,” she tells me as the rickshaw speeds towards their hangout den, Dal Boulevard.

 

Ajaz waits till we’re in a shikara, or houseboat, to surprise Farhana with a can of beer. She pops it open and takes a sip. The boatman frowns but nonetheless, he manoeuvres the boat further away from the orthodoxy of Srinagar. The couple steal a kiss as a dark plume of smoke makes itself visible over the city. In Srinagar, there’s no time for love.
