NIH director Dr. Francis Collins speaks with Dr. Idowu Aimola of Nigeria, one of 10 fellows participating in a new program, the African Postdoctoral Training Initiative (APTI). Fellows spend 2 years in the lab of an NIH senior investigator, learning cutting-edge science while working on a research project of mutual interest. The immersion is intended to give the fellows the expertise to become research leaders when they return home and to foster col-laborations between NIH scientists and institutions in Africa.
Dr. Aimola teaches biochemistry at the largest university in Nigeria. Working in Dr. Collins' lab, Aimola will be engaged in high-tech single-cell biology and learning to analyze genomic data. His project will investigate why some people are predisposed to diabetes, a growing problem in Africa.

The National Institutes of Health selected 50 students for the 2019-2020 Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP). The year-long research training program allows medical, dental, and veterinary students to pause their university studies to live and conduct basic, clinical, or translational research work on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The scholars begin their fellowship in July 2019.
“The NIH Medical Research Scholars Program attracts the brightest talent from across the country. These scholars are the future leaders in American medicine,” said Thomas R. Burklow, M.D., director of the MRSP.

Ten African scientists have been selected for training at the National Institutes of Health as part of a new fellowship program to build research capacity in African countries and develop ongoing scientific partnerships. NIH, the African Academy of Sciences, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are collaborating to establish the African Postdoctoral Training Initiative.

The MRSP is a comprehensive, year-long research enrichment program designed to attract research-oriented medical, dental and veterinary students to the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md.

Dr. Robert Colbert trains Dr. Amy Petrik (Post-Doctoral Student) and Dr. Grace Kwon (Post-Doctoral Student) in the lab. They are examining skin fibroblasts under a microscope. Skin fibroblasts are reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), which can then be differentiated into bone forming cells. These are used to study how specific genetic variants associated with susceptibility to ankylosing spondylitis, help cause spinal ankylosis. The PTRB researches spondyloarthritis and related disorders—including ankylosing spondylitis—particularly with childhood onset. Dr. Robert Colbert is developing a research program to characterize the mechanisms responsible for initiating and promoting inflammation and dysregulated bone formation in these disorders. These studies will build on recent advances in our understanding of the genetics of ankylosing spondylitis, including the role of the immune system in mediating inflammation.

Barbara C. Yang, Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) Fellow, working in the Translational Immunology Section of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), and Joseph “Greg” Dolan, also a Postbaccalaureate IRTA Fellow, working in the Translational Autoinflammatory Disease Section, look at chamber slides containing keratinocytes and fibroblasts. The emphasis of the Translational Autoinflammatory Disease Section is on applying a systematic approach to the clinical and immunological description of a number of autoinflammatory diseases. The Translational Immunology Section provides researchers with accurate and reproducible immune monitoring assays. The two teams, led by principal investigators Raphaela T. Goldbach-Mansky, M.D., M.H.S., and Massimo G. Gadina, Ph.D., work closely together. The photograph was taken April 24, 2009, in the NIH Clinical Center.

Three California State University, Northridge (CSUN) BUILD PODER trainees, (from left) Dayana Banuelos, Ashley Ward and Steven Meza, were featured in the Fall 2016 CSUN Magazine for its research issue. BUILD PODER is CSUN’s Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) program, which is part of the NIH Common Fund’s Diversity Program Consortium. Ward is one of the first nine BUILD PODER students to graduate May 2017, and she is now at the University of Colorado, Denver, earning a doctorate in cancer biology. Banuelos, a psychology major, and Meza, an engineering major, both completed competitive summer research programs at research institutions and will be graduating spring 2018 with plans to pursue PhDs.
