After massively increasing outdoor lighting...
"...there was a 21 percent increase in reported evening incidents that occurred in alleys (428 to 519). When daytime offenses were analyzed, a 7 percent decrease was observed."
"These findings indicate that, during the study period, there did not appear to be a suppression effect on crime as a result of increased alley lighting. In fact, it appears that with the increased lighting came an increase in the number of crimes reported to the Chicago Police Department."
Motion sensors and sensible lighting levels are safer and cheaper. Excessive lighting has no real advantage, but does have real consquences. Read up on light pollution and join the Light Pollution Group!
Tailgating, speeding JCPS School Bus
Here in Jefferson County Kentucky our schools are in such a hurry to be #1 nothing stops them from getting to their destination. Pray for the children on these buses since the hundreds of thousands of dollars in Federal Grants given to Jefferson County to remedy the situation has not worked.
This is every day here - been that way for decades. There is a railroad crossing on Old Henry Road with no gates - during peak traffic times this crossing is a nightmare - school busses cross here many times daily. We had requested crossing gates on these tracks YEARS ago yet to date still no gates.

The Pitt-Dixon House is situated at the east end of Duke of Gloucester Street. The original house dated to the first quarter of the 18th century (1717-1719). This is a reconstruction. The original structure was lost in 1896 due to a fire.

Shields Tavern is one of several taverns on Duke of Gloucester Street, near the Capitol in Virginia's 18th century capital, and it is one of the colonial taverns where 21st century visitors can have a meal appropriate to the colonial period, in a colonial atmosphere. With the building facing north and the sign mounted on the building, the lighting is not ideal. I like the wrought iron, dormers, and dentil molding details of the building, which provide context for the sign.
When I first visited Colonial Williamsburg, in 1974, there was no Shields Tavern; instead, the handsome building then was known as Marot's Ordinary, and it was painted a deep gold rather than white. Presenting the building now as Shields Tavern results from changing the time period represented. According to a Colonial Williamsburg research report on Marot's Ordinary, John Marot bought a part of the property on which the structure sits from James Shields in 1708, and Marot operated an ordinary (another name for a tavern) there until his death in 1717, after which the business was by his family, including descendants. By the early 1740s, James Shields, son-in-law of John Marot (and apparently the son of the James Shields from whom Marot had bought some land several decades earlier), was operating the tavern; he died in 1750, and his wife (Anne Marot Shields) inherited the property, but it passed to her minor son, James Shields III, when she remarried, and was leased for a time to another person. James Shields III operated the tavern from 1755 until he sold it in 1770, after which it ceased to be a tavern.

Brown-Ryan Livery Stable, 25 Main Street Southeast; ca. 1880, 1982-1984; original architect/builder unknown; Miller Westerbeck and Hanson (10).
Significance: Unusual survival of a late nineteenth-century stable structure, relocated from its original site.
Several historic buildings were demolished to accommodate the Riverplace project, but two buildings did survive, albeit in a much altered form. The Brown-Ryan Livery stable was constructed about 1880 at 20 Second Street Northeast. The MacDonald-Mack study characterized the two-story brick and stone building as “exhibiting Italianate details,” with tall, narrow windows. The livery stable, like its neighbor the John Ryan Baths, was in the way of the two-building high-rise complex that would become known as The Falls and The Pinnacle, and was slated for demolition. However, as a concession to historic preservation concerns, the city decided to move the livery a few blocks to the east, to 25 Main Street Southeast. Late in 1981, the stable was hoisted onto wheels and moved to its current location. Given the building’s dimensions and the plans for the rest of Riverplace, the front facade of the livery stable could not face Main Street, but rather was turned incongruously 90 degrees from the street. For a time the livery stable was part of the retail operation at Riverplace, but the building is now used for office space.

Colonial lots 13 and 14 lie on the south side of Duke of Gloucester Street adjoining the Market Square. As early as ca 1740 Philip Lightfoot held lots and houses in Williamsburg which records indicate very strongly to be the property above described. At the death of Philip Lightfoot the property fell to his sons John, Armistead and William in theory but in actuality the "orphan son of William" came into the property upon the death of his father in 1767 and held it to his death in 1809. The Frenchman's Map (1782) shows buildings on the lot and the College Map (1791?) and the Bucktrout Map (1803) indicate the name "Lightfoot" on lots 13 and 14. No insurance policies have been found for this property but adjoining property was insured by the Mutual Assurance Society. The Lightfoot property was described in 1809 as a boundary line for Gabriel Maupin's houses then owned by Peter Rob Deneufville. Other policies for the neighboring property give "Lightfoot's lot on the west". In 1839 the Lightfoot family sold the property to George W. Southall, Williamsburg lawyer, who made extensive repairs in 1840-42. The land tax for 1842 shows that Southall is charged with "1 lot valued at $3500 with value of buildings given at $3100. The buildings upon this lot have been thoroughly repaired and reassured". In 18.7 Southall conveyed to William S. Peachy this property: "1 lot $3500; value of buildings $3100 From George W. Southall 1846". It seems likely that the wing on the east was then added and used as a law-office by Peachy. Mr. John S. Charles described the dutch roof house with gable end to the street in his "Recollections of Williamsburg 1861-65", and Mrs. Victoria M. Lee in her "Reminiscences of Williamsburg in 1861" noted that the newly restored Nightengale House was the old Peachy House..." Miss Emma Lou Barlow who has lived over fifty years on the adjoining property to the Lightfoot house has vivid recollections of the "Dutch roof house on the eastern end of the property" stating that it was used as a kitchen by the Peachy family and other families. There seems no justification from the records that the "Dutch roof house" was ever used as a law office by the Lightfoot family or any eighteenth century renter. In 1888 the property came into possession of Sallie C. Spencer.
