============================================

This is part of the Ebro battlefield (1938), in Southern Catalonia.

This is one of the bunkers in Hill 562, the key position in the whole sector. It was destroyed by direct fire through the embrasures by fascist T-26 tanks. The shrapnell impacts inside could still be seen. The roof was destroyed post-war, to extract the iron bars (usuall in most bunkers of the war).

The last and dramatic combats of the battle took place in a vital position to protect the retreat of the Republican Army: "Los Raimats", north of La Fatarella. Sensing the paramount importance of this position, the Republicans conscientiously fortified it, with many trenches connecting eight concrete bunkers, most armed with machine guns but at least one with an anti-tank gun. The final assault began on November 14: the fascist troops occupied La Fatarella and continued towards Raimats with many tanks. German Commander Gustav Trippe died in the first assault. The defenders of the XV Brigade lost some positions (hill 554, were this bunker stands), but held on, while the rest of the Republican Army crossed the Ebro by Flix and Riba-roja.

On 15th November the attack increased, with much artillery and aviation bombing. T26 tanks fired directly at the bunkers' embrasures, killing the defenders. This allowed the infantry to assault the last defenses of Hill 562, killing almost all the defenders. Riba-roja and Flix fell on the 16th, but the Ebro army had not been annihilated.

The Battle of the Ebro (July 25 - November 16, 1938) was the most important and deadlier of the Spanish Civil War. There are those who also consider it the most decisive, but I think that unfortunately the war was already decided long before, at least since the breaking of the front of Aragon on March 9 of the same year.

The battle began with the greatest offensive made by the Republican forces, when they crossed the river Ebro between Mequinensa and Amposta (especially between Riba-roja and Miravet), and advanced to the line La Pobla de Massaluca -Vilalba dels Arcs -Gandesa - Serra de Pandols . But in just 48 hours, the dazzling advance was stopped short. Then Franco decided to crush the republican forces hill by hill (with massive artillery and bomber barrages), in a battle of attrition identical to the First World War for which the Republicans had no resources or alternative, especially with the river behind them. The main assaults, which lasted from August 10 to October 29, were concentrated in a very small and devastated area: the triangle Vertex Gaeta - Corbera - Camposines.

Finally, a final offensive on October 30 occupied the ridge of the Serra de Cavalls, making the entire Republican bridgehead unsustainable, which managed, however, to withdraw in an orderly manner until November 16. But the damage was already done, and there were no forces left for a proper defense of Catalonia, which fell three months later. Then, fascist darkness.

B&M Bargains seem to be racing ahead of all other UK discount retailers diecast wise. Minimal HTI generics, new batches of Hot Wheels and of course they are now an official Matchbox stockist. On top of that they've also been able to source some 2021 Pick-Up and Orange & Blue series sets from China, both of which never appeared in the UK officially.

I was tempted enough to grab one of these bright yellow Mazda REPU castings which for 1.99 offers acceptable value and nice card artwork.

Va, la lumière la divine

N’est pas l’épouvantable éclair

Qui nous devance et nous devine

Comme un songe cruel et clair !

Il éclate !... Il va nous instruire !...

Non !... La solitude vient luire

Dans la plaie immense des airs

Où nulle pâle architecture,

Mais la déchirante rupture

Nous imprime de purs déserts !

N’allez donc, mains universelles,

Tirer de mon front orageux

Quelques suprêmes étincelles !

Les hasards font les mêmes jeux !

Le passé, l’avenir sont frères

Et par leurs visages contraire

Une seule tête pâlit

De ne voir où qu’elle regarde

Qu’une même absence hagarde

D’îles plus belles que l’oubli.

Noirs témoins de tant de lumières

Ne cherchez plus... Pleurez, mes yeux !

Ô pleurs dont les sources premières

Sont trop profondes dans les cieux !...

Jamais plus amère demande !...

Mais la prunelle la plus grande

De ténèbres se doit nourrir !...

Tenant notre race atterrée,

La distance désespérée

Nous laisse le temps de mourir !

Entends, mon âme, entends ces fleuves !

Quelles cavernes sont ici ?

Est-ce mon sang ?... Sont-ce les neuves

Rumeurs des ondes sans merci ?

Mes secrets sonnent leurs aurores !

Tristes airains, tempes sonores,

Que dites-vous de l’avenir !

Frappez, frappez, dans une roche,

Abattez l’heure la plus proche...

Mes deux natures vont s’unir !

Ô formidablement gravie,

Et sur d’effrayants échelons,

Je sens dans l’arbre de ma vie

La mort monter de mes talons !

Le long de ma ligne frileuse

Le doigt mouillé de la fileuse

Trace une atroce volonté !

Et par sanglots grimpe la crise

Jusque dans ma nuque où se brise

Une cime de volupté !

Ah ! brise les portes vivantes !

Fais craquer les vains scellements

Épais troupeau des épouvantes,

Hérissé d’étincellements !

Surgis des étables funèbres

Où te nourrissaient mes ténèbres

De leur fabuleuse foison !

Bondis, de rêves trop repue,

Ô horde épineuse et crépue,

Et viens fumer dans l’or, Toison !

Blue spiked rampion (Phyteuma spicatum ssp. coeruleum)

The traditional fishing coble 'Repus', was found in bad repair at South Gare but was discovered to have once belonged to a Skinningrove fisherman who had died in the 1980s. Its name is just 'super' spelled backwards. The boat was built at Redcar in 1963 and retired from the fishing register in November 1996. Local people repaired the boat and provided two chainsaw-carved figures in 2008 as a memorial to all fishermen lost at sea off the Grove

Because of his brilliant puppet animations, Czech puppeteer and stop-motion film-maker Jiří Trnka (1912-1969) was called ‘the Walt Disney of Eastern Europe’. For Dobry vojak Svejk/The Good Soldier Svejk (1955), he adapted the classic anti-war satire 'Švejk' by Jaroslav Hašek.

Jiří Trnka was born in the city of Pilsen, Austria-Hungary (now Plzeň, Czech Republic) in 1912. From the moment he could hold a pencil, Trnka drew pictures. At secondary school, his drawing teacher was the puppeteer and man of the theater Josef Skupa. Trnka studied at Prague's School of Arts and Crafts, and in 1936 he began a wooden puppet theatre on Prague’s Wenceslas Square, which was disbanded after the outbreak of WWII. During the war, he designed stage sets and illustrated Špalíček veršů a pohádek, a collection of Czech rhymes and fairy tales by František Hrubín. In the immediate wake of World War II, Trnka founded Bratři v triku (Brothers in Tricks) with fellow animators Eduard Hofman and Jiří Brdečka. This studio, dedicated to the production of traditional, hand-drawn animation, lives on today. Their first film was Zasadil dědek řepu (Grandpa Planted a Beet), followed by the puppet film Christmassy Betlém (Bethlehem), which captures the atmosphere of a Czech folk Christmas. In 1947, Trnka made the puppet film Špalíček (The Czech Year), which told six separate folk tales of Czech life. It was a defining moment for Trnka as he won several international awards three years running across Europe. Puppet animation is a traditional Czech art form, of which Trnka became the undisputed master. Most of his films were intended for adults and many were adaptations of literary works. These included feature-length covering working-class traditions and national heroes, such as Bajaja/Prince Bayaya (1950), and Staré povesti ceské/Old Czech Legends (1953). They made him an internationally recognized artist and the winner of film festival awards at Venice and elsewhere. He was a puppet-maker, a sculptor, and a set and stage designer. All of these talents were abundantly well utilised in his highly distinctive film work.

To explore the classics of Czech literature, Jiří Trnka decided in 1955 to adapt to the screen the immensely popular novel Osudy dobreho vojaka Svejka za svetove valky (The Good Soldier Švejk) written by Jaroslav Hašek. This anti-war satire is the most translated novel of Czech literature. At the time, there already existed film adaptations with real actors, such as Dobrý voják Švejk/The Last Bohemian (Martin Frič, 1931), starring Saša Rašilov as Švejk. Trnka however was the first to make an animated film about the bumbling soldier who earnestly attempts to follow orders. For the construction of the puppets, Trnka was inspired by the illustrations for the original book made by Josef Lada, which in the popular imagination were closely associated with the characters of Hašek. Dobry vojak Svejk/The Good Soldier Svejk (Jirî Trnka, 1955) is divided into three episodes, which tell the grotesque adventures of Švejk during World War I. The narrator was Jan Werich. The humorous film received several awards at international festivals. Trnka's masterpiece was Sen noci svatojánské/A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Jirî Trnka, 1959), which was presented in Cannes in 1959, which made him the icon of ‘Eastern country’ animators. Cerise Howard at Senses of Cinema: “a stunningly beautiful, highly faithful adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. Several years in the making, the puppet animation is more liquid, more balletic than ever.” Trnka's last film, Ruka/The Hand (Jirî Trnka, 1965), was an unexpected and surprising break in his work thus far. It was something completely new in content and form. The Hand is a merciless political allegory, which strictly follows the story outline without developing lyrical details as usual. In 1968, he received the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustrators, recognizing his career contribution to children's literature. Jiri Trnka died in 1969 in Prague, only 57 years old. Four months later, The Hand was banned; all copies were confiscated by the secret police, put in a safe, and the film was forbidden for screening for the next twenty years.

A perennial plant that grows naturally in the central and southeastern parts of the USA. I have an individual of Texas ancestry.

Place it in a bright half-day shade that avoids the west sun, not in the shade.

The flowers bloom for a long time, with a flowering period of May to October. The cool autumn has a darker flower color, and the flower color is slightly lighter in the hot season when the temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius.

It is a perennial plant, and if managed indoors in winter, rhizomes will remain, and in spring it will sprout again and bloom from early summer to late autumn.

If possible, replant with new soil every year to divide the stock. The reason is that continuous cropping disorders are likely to occur.

As fertilizer, a proper amount of slow-release fertilizer is applied as the main fertilizer, or 1000 diluted liquid chemical fertilizer is given once a week.

THE ‘REPUS’ BOAT

This vessel was a working fishing coble based at Whitby then later

abandoned at South Gare, near the entrance to the River Tees. It was

due to be part of a bonfire when it was rescued and brought to

Skinningrove, the home of its owner. The boat was restored and wooden

figures added to recognise those lost at sea in this area.

Found recently at Walmart. Flagstaff, AZ.
