The Repus is an old fishing coble that was found in bad condition in South Gare. Once belonging to well-loved local fisherman Wilbur Cox (who died in the 1980s), it was decided that the boat be brought back home to Skinningrove, repaired, and put back on the coast with two carved figures inside it.

The coble is a type of boat particular to the North East. Its flat bottom means it can land and launch easily from the region’s shallow, sandy beaches, while the high bow protects fishermen from the many storms that the North Sea brings.

The carved figures that stand watch in the boat represent and memorialise the many sailors lost at sea in the treacherous waters off the North East coast.

The piece was created by chainsaw sculptor Steve Iredale and fellow sculptor Richard Baker, and was made possible by Tommy Evans and Barry Hunt from Skinningrove Link Up, Kilton Area Committee, Loftus Town Council, Redcar & Cleveland Council and Boulby Potash Mine, as well as many local people.

By 2023, the coble was once again in a state of disrepair, with damage to the boat and its two figures. It was restored by Norman Brown, who coated the figures in fibreglass in order to preserve them against further damage. The restoration was funded by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council with contributions from the Brotton Ward Councillors Cllr Barry Hunt, Cllr Martin Fletcher and Cllr Graham Cutler.

The steelies are without doubt the best mainline wheel currently around(maybe apart from the wirespoke BBS type one) and it can almost turn any classic model into a beauty. In the Repu's case though, the wheels add to the already phenomenal model. The detailing is pretty neat with side and rear detailing and tampo work, all in line with the actual Mad Mike pickup. There is virtually nothing to dislike in this.

Only a couple of days after a road trip to New Brunswick and back, I found myself standing in Ottawa International Airport waiting to catch a flight to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. While I had been traveling around the Maritimes photographing foxes and other things, my son, Graeme, had decided that he wanted to travel to Dominican Republic for his remaining week of annual holiday leave from work. He asked me if I might be interested in coming along. I thought about it for a long time (a couple of seconds at least) and the search was on for last minute packages that would fit his time frame. Punta Cana flights fit his tight schedule the best so away we went to Punta Cana for a week.
