My parents remote for their gas fireplace. I just think it's funny that there are just 2 buttons on a remote. Lazy fuzzers.
Most dSLR's can record light into the Infra Red spectrum. This allows you to fit a near black IR filter to your camera (after setting up the tripod/focs/etc - as you won't see a thing once the filter is fitted). Then try some shots 10 seconds or more at f16 to see what you record.
To check your camera can record IR - point a remote control at it and take a picture - be sure to use a long exposure as the IR LED might only be on for 1/10th of a second - so it might take a few shots to catch it. On the remote I used, the green LED came on too, so I could press a button and judge when to press the shutter. I'll order my IR filter soon - so expect some shots later in the month. @christait - good idea for a competition?
PS there are two IR filters you can buy. The one you want is usually called the RED filter. there is also one called the BLACK filter, which lets only IR through, and is more for scientific work. The RED one allows some yellow and red light through too
This picture is taken with the Nokia N73 camera phone. I tried to capture the remote with an unsharp background with the monitor. Unfortunately the focus was on the keyboard. Eventually with some editing in iPhoto it still makes a great photograph.
From the 1960's this was one of the first wireless remote controls for TVs. Not much functionality but a big step for couch potatoes.
Testing the seemingly faulty IR filter in my 40D. If the IR filter was any good, the front of the remote control should be plain black...

Stopped by the remote controlled airfield for short time for the first time in quite a while. A friend of mine was flying a few of the 31 planes he owns. Only got photos of 2 of them while there, the first two red ones and the last six photos here. Fun watching how skillful these pilots are doing aerial maneuvers, takeoffs and landings. I always send any photos I take for them to post on their club site. Sorry for so many photos, just saving to my album. :-)
First, travel a few hundred miles on a road into the middle of South Dakota. Then when you're right near the middle of it, turn left onto a dirt road.
Go south on that dirt road for quite a few miles deeper into the nothing. YOu should be able to see the church about 5 miles away because of the nothing inbetween you two.
You will know when you are there.
Beautiful little church truly in the middle of nowhere. but with a history that stretches back 100 years.
BTW, stop before you go, there is no indoor plumbing :-)

The child that was choosen to pull the switch was only 8 years old.
How cool is that!!?
