I processed this to look as old as the old photo that eventually faded on my office wall. My favourite spot and I used a film effect filter amongst other processing as it belongs to another time. That time has passed but I continue to make new memories here because I go here still and I just remember....good times. Happy memories both old and new..

I felt the need for slate. After all it had been a full five weeks since I last saw the grey stuff. Wandering the streets of Manchester or going only as far as Buxton doesn't constitute an adventure. But I don't like slate under a blue sky. It needs to be dreary and wet, stormy or wild for me to enjoy it. So I decided to concoct a plan to see slate under different conditions to the day time. A plan formed in my head. At this time of the year sunset isn't until 9.45pm, and on the other side of night sunrise happens at 4.30am. How about if I left home and went down to Dinorwic at 6pm, arriving at about 8pm giving me a couple of hours to catch the quarry in magnificent warm evening light, and then sleep in the car and catch dawn less than six hours later? It seemed like a nutty idea to me but it's the sort of thing the most ardent Flrickrite does...the sort I despise who only shoots at sunset and dawn, the sort who sits in their chosen spot for a couple of hours just waiting for the optimal light. But if they can do it, can I get away with trying it once without seeming too obsessive? It seemed unlikely. and besides sleeping in the car constituted a night out, on my own. Such things are verboten in my marriage.

But my wife has seemed in a different mood recently, more positive, and I thought I would chance my luck, so I asked her. And she barely thought about it so that after just a second of consideration she said, "I suppose so. Yes". I was massively surprised, and asked her, "Aren't you supposed to moan and bitch, make a fuss, get angry at the suggestion and do a flip before saying, NO, very firmly?" But she enthusiastically made a picnic and flask of coffee as I gathered sleeping bag, cushions, wet wipes and dog food.

And I went off enjoying the light traffic and evening sunshine, so that I arrived in Dinorwic in well under two hours. Up on Lon Garret we went to look around the old ruined farming cottages and very small walled fields even higher up on the hillside, where the midges were most numerous, and then into the quarry and up a few levels to the highest drum house. Initially the light was lovely but as the sun morphed into a red globe it dipped behind the low band of cloud on the horizon and the piercing strong warm light I was hoping to see never materialised. It was quite a disappointment.

So we took the car down to the Padarn lakeside to rest up for the night amongst more clouds of midges. Putting the rear seats of the Honda Civic down to form a 'flat' bed, Darcy and I had a small picnic before she settled in her bed. I had previously measured the inside of my car and knew it was longer than me, but for whatever reason, as I got into the sleeping bag I found it wasn't quite long enough. I couldn't work that one out. And I also found that the seats don't fold entirely flat, and even with a sleeping bag around me, it feels very hard and painfully uncomfortable. I locked the car from the inside but struggled to get to sleep. Darcy was alert to the rabbits that skipped about the area in the dark, and various individuals must have walked past, causing her to bark. The odd car or van came in and manoeuvered amongst the potholes. Sleep finally came around 1.00am for about 45 minutes and later for about an hour but I became tangled up in the sleeping bag in the confines of the back of the car and then the zip unzipped until I was hardly in it. The agony of being so uncomfortable I could not sleep, had me twisting and turning, and looking at the time. By 3.00am I thought it was noticeably lighter and by 4.00am I thought it was just better I got out and put my boots on.

As I gathered my gear to go, it was then I discovered my camera was dead. A brief display on the top showed the battery was flat, and it would do absolutely nothing else. Well there will be clever individuals out there who will say you should have a spare battery but the reality is that the Nikon EN-EL15 battery has always been amazing and never come close to dying even on long daytime trips when I have taken hundreds of shots. And I had told others I really couldn't imagine the day I would need a spare. Huh? But today I was stuffed. I contemplated going home right then but thought, no, I will see if I can use my Samsung S8 Edge phone (By the way, don't get one. It may have amazing advanced functionality but the curved Edge makes it slippery, horrible to use and easy to drop)

I went the short distance to that huge sword thing set in a mound of concrete next to a large Car Park meter and other signage that looks so ridiculous at the side of beautiful Llyn Padarn. It was now almost fully light, and I had decided I must retrieve something from my night of uncomfortableness, midges and flat battery. I tried to rig my phone to my tripod with a bungee but that rendered it virtually inoperable, especially on self timer. I adjusted the tripod legs and balanced it just right so it sat unrestrained in the crook of the legs. Donning my penguin costume, I found that the sight of it's yellow beak and big eyes scared away the cloud of midges that had clustered around my head before I put it on, and felt some mild relief. It had surprised me that no one else had this idea before, but it seemed obvious to me that you could lie at the base of the sword and make it look like it was being plunged down through you. Yeah? I suspect thousands will follow my idea once I put the picture on line. But I am the first...………..I don't really need to consider I might be the last. But purists will probably argue it's not very realistic. I mean no blood is visible, but I think such people need to take a serious look at themselves.

Anyhow, phone rested in portrait format in the crook of my tripod legs, I set the self-timer to its maximum 10 seconds delay and dashed to the mound of concrete at the base of the sword, flopped in position and grinned in the direction of the phone. But it had fallen to the tarmac, landing on a corner of the glass slab that makes this very expensive phone. Now that's another big chip in it. My jaunt to Wales had just taken one more bad turn. Yes, this really had been a crap idea.

In part, I was saved from total depression when a rather pretty, twenty something, brunette appeared. She was walking straight towards me in the growing sunlight. It was only about 5.15 am and I was surprised she had just come, when there was absolutely no other soul around to rescue me. And boy, did she seem pleased to see me, a big smile on her face. But she did tell me she was just on her way home after a night out on the town and that this was in fact the first time she had met a penguin at Llyn Padarn and certainly not in any of Bangor's night spots. As chat up lines go, "Have you got a light?" doesn't really do it for me, but that's exactly what she asked. And I said, "No", but yes she was very willing to hold my phone and take one shot, for my best memory of an awful night out near Llanberis.

My wife hasn't stopped chuckling at my discomfort yet. That will teach him!

This is how far behind I am with editing my own pictures. Took this in the summer holidays....

Waves from Superstorm Sandy crashing into land at the E 55th Street Marina spilled over onto the Shoreway, a main East-West artery into downtown. The road was ultimately closed due to safety concerns.

Homemade bay rum aftershave. Recipe here (we used the first one in the post and added star anise and cloves). I made this for Sam last year as a Valentine surprise and he promptly broke it so this year I made a quadruple batch.

Hunger Strike for Social Justice and against YFE's Campaign for Meritocracy and lnequali.

AISA .

9th 08V: Rajeev, Suchetna, Awadhesh, Rajesh Solidarity Public· Meeting on 'Merit, Privileges, and Ri ghts in Democracy Speaker: Prof. lmtiaz Ahmed. noted social scientist, former faculty, CPS, JNU Ad. Block (Hunger Strike Spot), 7.6.06 (tonight) 9.30 pm .

.

Is YFE really for Class-based Social Justice? In its leaflet dated 5.6.05,Youth for Equality wrote eloquently ofhow 'varg' (Class) is the only valid reality in Indian society. In last night's leaflet, .

YFE hasquoted the international corporatemedia on how reservations wtll hamper merit and make other countries suspect India's talent We wouldlike to ask the YFE to reflect upon abasic contradiction in their arguments: On the one hand, they claim they believe thatsociety is class-based, so caste-based reservations are unwelcome, but reservations based .

on 'economic criteria' are acceptable. In other words, the polrcy of reserv1ng seats for deprivedstudents is OK by the YFE, as long as caste is .

not the basis fordeciding who ls deprived. .

But on the other hand, YFE claims that admissions to higher education or jobs based on anything buttop marks obtained in competitive exams, would 'harm merit'. So.ifone accepts this logic, won'tclass--based reservations for the poor, also 'harm merif? Wouldn't the international press havemade an equal hue and cry ifcaste-based reservations were replaced by a50%quota for the poor? Or is the YFE claiming that only 'lower castes' are inherently incapable of 'merit', whereasthe poor of upper castes are capable of it? Either the YFE should admit that their argument about 'merit' is flawed and false; or they must admrt that theydo:1't really support 'economic criteria-based quotas'. .

'International Corporate Media': YFE's 'Expert' on Indian Reality! It is interesting that the YFE,which was recently lambasting the Left for upholding ioreign ideology' and for being unable to understand Indian reafity, sees the 'international media' as 'unbiased'! Even in Britain and the US, thousands of common citizens believe that their ·embedded' media liedto them about the invasion of Iraq. That media suffers from various biases-including its imperialist and racist outlook.Expecting this .

media to understandthe complexities ofIndian society, and the Indian urge for an egalitarian social order, is quite ajoke. CJass and Caste: Comb;ned Tools of Exploitation Some think thatthe concept of caste-based reservations goes against the Left's understanding ofclass. This is achildish notion of what the .

Left understands byclass.Class is what allows the owners of wealth to exploit the labourofthe vast majority of those who are condemned never to own weatth.Rememberthat this class society, which speaks highly of merit, does not allocate wealth and resources based on merit Those who till the land may be best qualified to own it, those who toil to makegrains grow, surely have the merit to eat the best of food; but these meritorious sections are landless, poorest, hungriest. In India, caste is a phenomenon that has facilitated and ossified the exploitation of labour; it has blocked social mobility, by fixing a division of labour (with supposedly divine sanction) based on birth. So, in India)caste is not simply social 'identity'-it crystallises together variousother economic and social factors. That is why casteso often overlaps with class, and while caste is not the only marker ofdeprivation. (economic, gender and other criteriaare also there) it is often a the most reliable indicator of deprivation. Class strugglecan never be waged without breaking this caste-caused lack ofsocial mobility. .

YFE tells us that the poor of all castes are deprived of access to higher education. Quite true.and we appeal to them to jotn the Left-led movement for schools and colleges offering education of uniformly good quality to all students.be they rich or poor. Thiswill inevitably be a movementagainst the system that forces students to compete for a shrinking number of seats; a movement that will struggle to end the sale of education as a commodity and the reservation of education for the rich; an end to a distorted notion of 'merit' that punishes students for poor marks, and tragically kills young people (through ever-increasing suicides)who fear 'failure'. The YFE has no agenda ofsuch a struggle to ensure education for all. .

But think: if the poor of all castes are uniformly deprivedof higher education, why is it that the relatively well-off of all castes are not equally well-represented in higher education? Why is it that upper castes who constitute one third of the population, dominate a disproportionate 2/3rds of the seats in higher education? .

Is it because they have inbom racialmerit'? If we don't subscribe to this racist argument. then we must accept that social discrimination of caste is blocking access to higher education. Reservations are amust tv address this caste-based discrimination. It is true that women, too, are dtsproportionately ill-represented in higher education, as are those from economically and regionally weaker sections So,we can debate about how to combine caste-based reservations with measures that take into account economic, gender and regional deprivation. But to argue that caste as acategory must be ignored, is to pretend to be blind to social reality. .

S< AISA condemns the anti-poor move of the UPA Government to hike oil prices -which will immediately cause the prices of transportation and all essential commodities to shoot up. Students must join other sections of s ociety in protesting against this anti-people move. .
