I've taken a ton of pictures documenting the first couple weeks of our move. As you can imagine, with the new job/neighborhood/apartment/state... pretty much everything, we've been super busy folks. Just getting around to uploading. Yes, on Christmas eve. :) Queen Anne, Seattle, 2009.

After Pearl Harbor, the whole state of Hawaii came under martial law in the panic that Japanese Americans on the islands would plan similar attacks and send word back to Japan. Roosevelt immediately signed proclamations that allowed the FBI to arrest any aliens that were seen as “dangerous to public peace of safety.” It also wasn’t long before a list of contraband items was put out and any Japanese American in possession of guns, cameras, radios, dynamite, and other such things were considered disloyal and dangerous. One of the biggest supporters of the internment movement was General John DeWitt. In his “Final Recommendation,” he states that Japanese Americans are members of an “enemy race” whether they were American citizens or not and that “undiluted racial strains” made them all innately Japanese. Finally, on February 19th, 1942, FDR signed Executive Order 9066 that gave the military the right to designate “military areas” upon which anyone could be excluded. However, Japanese Americans were the only group to suffer from this order in which their evacuation to the internment camps was depicted as a military necessity. In this picture, the executive order is being carried out as people and luggage are unloaded from a truck and a small girl if gruffly stopped from wandering by a guard.

Entrence to Manzanar in the Eastern Sierra of California. One of many camps where Executive Order 9066 stated that all Japanese residents of California, Oregon and Washington were ordered into such places for national security reasons. This was in early 1942, following the attack on Pearl Harbor. While some Germans and Italians were rounded up during the same period, it was nothing to the extent of the Japanese. It would be over 40 years before the United States recognized its fault and began reparation payments to former internee's, evavuees and others whose liberties were compromised during the war years.

Fifteen miles west at Abraham is the location of the bleak desert site of a concentration camp, one of ten in Western America, in which 110,000 persons of Japanese ancestry were interned against their will during World War II. They were the victims of wartime hysteria, racial animosity, and economic opportunism of the West Coast. Confined behind the barbed wire fence and guarded by armed sentries and held for no justifiable reason, the internees, two-thirds of whom were American citizens, and the majority of whom were woman and children, not only endured the bitter physical discomforts of the desrt heat and cold, but sustained a shocking affornt to their sense of justice and fair play and human dignity. May this grim episode of basic American principles gone astray remind us to work for understanding and goodwill and justice in an enlightened America today.
Historic San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railway (SA&AP) Depot in Bertram, Texas. The 1912 depot was relocated from Orange Grove, Texas in 1998 and restored. This site was originally the location of an Austin & Northwestern Railroad that was demolished in 1964.
