That is rather a fine ice cream van and Sparshatt's were one of the niche constructors of such vans and similar refridgerated vehicles. The company were based in Portsmouth and business must have been decent as in 1962 they moved to a new works in Portswood. I'm not sure when they ceased vehicle building and indeed they may still be in business as car dealers in the Hampshire area?
I've had a further look at the van itself, registered in Portsmouth ETP 102 and the name reads J Dagostino. It appears that they were still in the ice cream business in Portsmouth until recently?
The story did not tell if the food carried by La Succulente (The Delicious One) had been delivered before breaking down !!!
September 1976 Bristol registered AEC Marshal Major six-wheeler box van of an unknown Showman, was quite a regular sight at local fairs during the eighties, until retirement in 1991. She was fitted with the late version of the AEC Ergo front panel, having the AEC letters raised high up between the upper and lower grilles. Speculation as to who had this motor new includes, possibly, supermarket, Sainsbury's.
