She weaves a subtle spell - is it magic or her heady charms that have you bound and helpless? You want to draw back but her eyes have captured you in their dark web and draw you inexorably in...
Agnes Devotion is a very exotic beauty and in my world she has vibes of Morgana, Morgan le Fay, Melisandre... definitely an enchantress of legend and fairy tale.
I made Agnes's dress and top from an embellished camisole. I was aiming for a dress that recalls the muses of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. They often portrayed images from myth and legend and their work is full of nymphs and enchantresses.
My thanks to davidd for the following association:
Oh, sweet Dardanella,
I love your harem eyes,
I'm a lucky fellow to capture such a prize,
Oh, Allah knows my love for you
And he tells you to be true, Dardanella,
Oh, hear my sigh, my Oriental,
Oh, sweet Dardanella, prepare the wedding wine,
There'll be one girl in my harem, when you're mine.
We'll build a tent
Just like the children of the Orient.
Oh, sweet Dardanella
My star of love divine.
Down beside the Dardanella Bay,
Where Oriental breezes play,
There lives a lonesome maid Armenian.
By the Dardanelles with glowing eyes
She looks across the seas and sighs
And weaves her love spell so sirenian.
Soon I shall return to Turkestan
I will ask for her heart and hand.
Thanks to the insight of my lovely friend Michał O. I saw that not only did my Agnes resemble Morgana or Morgan Le Fay from Arthurian legend but she was also perfect as Melisandre from Game of Thrones - her extra long flowing red hair, even the hairstyle, pale pale skin and piercing blue eyes are so perfect for Melisandre!

I made Agnes's dress and top from an embellished camisole, pulling the original spaghetti straps up to form the cap sleeves. I like how organic and flowing it looks with the front drape and the fish tail train which I slightly gathered in the back. It has cross-over straps at the back and it can be worn open at the front or buttoned up with or without a belt. I was aiming for a dress that recalls the muses of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, who often portrayed images from myth and legend full of nymphs and enchantresses.

It was like a day in paradise sandwiched between two days of hell.
But I'll take it.
Half a day on the tall ship Red Witch to catch a little airshow action and some wind in the sails...
I needed that and my soul just ate it all up.
It's a small world.
Last year when the tall ship HMS Bounty sank off of North Carolina in Hurricane Sandy I and millions of others were transfixed on the images on TV showing that beautiful ship going down in the Atlantic Ocean.
I was rooting for the crew to get off of there and make it home.
I'd noticed that one of the crew member's who'd gone through it lived in Blue Island just south of Chicago and I'd made a mental note to see if I couldn't get an interview with him and shoot him closeup.
I knew what he'd gone through and I wanted to let some time go by before I hit him up for the story.
And you know that the guy had quite a story to tell.
But my plan was fruitless and I never got to shoot him and hear him tell that tale.
Until yesterday.
I was talking to a guy on the crew of the Red Witch and he told me that his name was Drew and that he was from Blue Island.
Instantly my mind put it all together.
'You were on the Bounty when it went down weren't you' I asked him.
He said that he was.
I was standing in front of the guy I wanted that opportunity to shoot last year.
And I seized that opportunity.
I'll give you more on that later this week.
I had an incredible day on the Red Witch combining a lot of the things I love.
I hope your weekend was as incredible as mine... minus the day from hell on Saturday.
And I hope you're easing your way into your work week just fine.
Feel the love!

When the winds pick up and the seas become edgy the mind seems to become aware of the smallness of the self and the fleeting nature of the soul.
At the helm working to maintain a heading while being thrown around by wind, waves or currents...
the vastness and infinite power of the ocean becomes apparent.
It becomes a time of silence.
Faint echoes in your head start to say things that you don't want to necessarily hear.
'What if... what if... what if.'
It's those times that the soft red glow of the compass seems to draw my focus.
It's a comforting glow.
It means at least one thing is right.
And though the world outside might be topsy turvy and turned upside down...
there's still that familiar magnetic force that pulls the compass north.
The compass becomes a place of refuge for a weary and frightened soul.
'All we need to do is make that lighthouse.'
It was like so many of the things I love came together right there like the alignment of the sun on the leading edge of the Red Witch's sail.
Good times.
A beautiful ship.
Sweet waters.
Spirits and libations from the motherland.
Great company.
And a gorgeous day.
Paradise.

Time changes on any long voyage on the water.
Everything seems to slow down.
It's almost too soothing and calming sometimes.
That's where the Patron comes in.
A lotta pirates dig their rum.
This pirate's got a thing for tequila.
Life at sea...
it's the life for me.
Captain Dave told me I could head below and check her out.
I didn't hesitate.
Becoming intimate with a ship that you're sailing on is a good thing and I wanted to know what she was made of.
I did a fancy maneuver down the ladder and I explored every nook and cranny on the Red Witch.
She's entirely made of wood and beautiful right down to her bones...
which I made sure I found a way to see.
In fact I opened every door, hatch, cabinet and drawer she had except for the one that was locked.
After a while when I got back topside Captain Dave asked me if I'd seen everything.
'Everything except what was behind the one locked door' I said.
He laughed a good laugh and then explained 'that's the owner's stateroom.'
'At least your honest' he said.
She was as beautiful down below as she was up top and it brought back so many dreams I've had of sailing oceans vast and far.
A real ship...
made of wood with two masts and some gorgeous rigging.
She could take me wherever my dreams beckoned me I thought.
A ship is a bunch of stories that float and this one I knew could be good for a story or two.
A lake schooner of 41 tons said the beam at the bow.
I smelled the smell of adventure.

Captain Dave leans on the wheel on the tall ship Red Witch sailing out of Burnham Harbor in Chicago.
He handled that boat impeccably and seemed like an alright guy to crew for.
Captain Dave had some good stories and he'd said he was also a captain on a tour boat in Chicago that did architectural tours.
I'd heard that the Wrigley Building on Michigan Avenue just north of the Chicago River was made with limestone ripped off of the Great Pyramid at Giza and Captain Dave had never heard that.
He asked me for my source and I told him that another tour guide had told me that and I checked it out on the internet.
That wasn't the first time I got to hear Captain Dave's boisterous laugh as he said 'you can't believe everything you read on the internet.'
I know.
Because I write some of it Captain Dave!
I couldn't find a reference today so maybe it was a bunch of bullshit Captain!
I had a fantastic time sailing on the Red Witch.
If you wanna see Chicago from it's most beautiful angle you gotta check it out.
And if say sixty of you wanna charter it for a 'photo-float' let me know and I'll take care of it!

This picture was taken in 2005 when I was just over a month old and my mommie, who had just rescued me from the dark place, introduced me to my Uncle and sent me along with him on a big adventure to China.
She thought it would be a good idea to have someone there to take care of my Uncle as he is a bit helpless when on his own.
Standing on the Great Wall of China felt great. My uncle told me that the Chinese sheep had it built many centuries ago to keep out the evil Mongolian Ducks who always tried to raid their cookie storrage. I was very impressed with their work. We wanted to take many pictures more but my Uncle’s camera decided exactly at this moment to run out of batteries. We still sometimes look at each other and think, why then… why not an hour later.
But apart from that mishap and an encounter with a red witch who we had to battle, the journey was without any more incidents. Well there was something, but I will tell that story tomorrow :-)
