We stayed in Escalante, Utah, along SR 12, gateway to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument for about a week, and used it as a jumping off point to visit various National and State Parks, including this one, Kodachrome Basin State Park. (12-03-25-7843, 44)

Kodachrome Basin was named in the late 1940s by a National Geographic Society Expedition in honor of the then revolutionary Kodak film that was celebrated for its color accuracy.

In the area there are many unusual geological forms, including a series of upright cylindrical chimneys called sand pipes.

While there, we hiked the Panorama Trail.

In the amazing Goblin Valley State Park, central Utah.

Taken in southern Utah. The oval stone almost felt like an altar...but I found it to be a pain with regard to composition. I didn't want to miss it...nor could it dominate the rendering. At the same time, the subtle sun rays had created a fairly dark scene. So...I did lots of toning throughout this shot to get the atmosphere I wanted to see. Finished and uploaded on Nov. 15, 2015.

MKG2007-05-12_0315 When I was a youngster we lived on a ranch a little east of this escarpment. We would drive our old truck up to the base and enjoy family picnics in the late evening when the shade started growing from the mountains. Things have changed a lot since then.
