Ferrandina is the 4th biggest town in Basilicata and one of its oldest tracing its roots back to the Magna Grecia, about 1000 BC with its original name Troilia after the city of Troy in Asia Minor leading some to suspect that some of the survivors of the sacked city ended up here. The town today is perched on a 482 m hill in the Basento Valley on the west side of the river Basento overseeing olive groves, vineyards, fruit orchards and cereal fields.
The town became a backwater throughout the Imperial era it faded from status because the Romans concentrated more on the development of the road network leading from Calabria to Puglia. During the later Byzantine era, the first Castle was constructed in the 6th century but was soon to be taken over by the Lombards in the 7th century back again to the Byzantine’s in the 9th finally the Normans in the 10th century with its fertile proximity to the river valley and high ground location it was coveted by many.
Where the town sits today is not where it began but in the 15th century a massive earthquake destroyed most of the buildings and it was decided by the rulers of the day the Aragonese that today’s current location had a little more stability than the old. This rebuilding is also when the city received its current name when King Frederick of Aragona in 1494, named it Ferrandina to memorialize his father Ferrante, the town’s coat of arms shows six F’s which stand for: Fridericus Ferranti Filius Ferrandinam Fabbricare Fecit.

Oswaldo Guayasamin is an Ecuadorian artist of the second half of the XXᵉ century, designated as an expressionist painter of social realism. Strongly inspired by South American art, he devoted much of his life to painting misery, exploitation, oppression, dictatorship and racism.

Under Stalin architectural decisions were not taken at random, he needed to create a popular identity. It was a valuable tool for propaganda. The style imposed by Stalin , was called the "Socialist Realism movement." It aimed to make people and socialism, heroics. It has evolved over time, from the ornamental neo classicism, to architecture of symmetry. These two styles together in Moscow, struck me. They show as much the power of architecture than the architecture of power.

Not much point in having a castle and not keeping out the undesirables as well as keeping the number of entrance points your enemies could attack to a minimum so in most cases gates were used to ward entrances and were usually manned in case the peasants were revolting.
Pictured here is the Mauritspoort or Grenadierspoort it is an eastern gate built in 1634 and would have had a drawbridge that could be lowered across the inner moat, you can still see the holes below the lion crest where the chains would run to raise and lower the draw bridge.
In 1860 the inner moat was filled in and a drawbridge was no longer needed at the same time they added two new pedestrian doors on either side of the gate.
The cityscape or architectural landscape is one of the few ways that historians can extract and corroborate historical information, on historical problem was that painters of old much like photographers of today did not always reflect what a city or village actually looked like, painters often used their imaginations, omitted or crafted structures to enhance the composition a practice still followed today no matter the media.

Pictured here is the back side of the Rathaus across the Katschhof square a frequently used city event area for concerts, festivals, weekly markets and of course the annual Christmas market which is something special to behold sandwiched between the Kaiserdom and the Rathuas.
The original rathaus is in what is called the Grashaus one of the oldest buildings in Aachen but in comparison to the current affair it is a footnote in the splendor.
