Possibly the last passenger train to visit Quakertown, Pennsylvania, the Souderton Railroad Days special pauses before returning to Souderton. Most onlookers are at the other end of the train, examining Blue Mountain and reading 4-6-2 425.
50026 Indomitable and 50023 Howe have just arrived at Reading's platform 9 with the 14.15 Paddington to Oxford. Apart from 50026, possibly some of the coaches and the base of platform 9, which has been subsumed into the new platforms 10 and 11, nothing else in this view exists today; including the Thames Water building peeping over the platform canopy.
Note the black relief around the front windows of both locos. This non-standard livery modification was only applied to these two locomotives and at one end of 50024, the latter in the revised version of the NSE livery.
Double heading in the Thames Valley was usually to reposition a locomotive or, as in this case, to provide insurance against the failure of a locomotive on test following repairs at Old Oak Common depot.
Seen outside Basingstoke Station in March 2022 is Newbury & District ADL Enviro400 MMC 785 SN16OHC operating the F51 football shuttle to Reading's Madjeski Stadium.
A couple from Bristol's Central Library on College Green. I have only recently come to realise that this beautiful old fashioned reading room exists upstairs, after many years of visiting the duller ground floor. The spiral staircases up to the next level were, sadly, closed off, I would have loved to explore up there!

Showing signs mid-morning of a brighter day to come, 'Western' Class52 D1059 lays down the power through centre-road upon an up West of England relief/charter.
Calling on platform4 heading west in transitional livery with full yellow ends (but always down the 'pecking-order'!) is Class47 D1739.
'Western Empire' worked on into 1975 until the call to BREL Swindon for retirement and disposal.

The Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern serves a small explosives manufacturing plant at Mount Carmel Junction, Pennsylvania. Since there is no runaround track nearby, the crew normally releases the brakes on outbound cars and drifts them down a small grade to get them on the west side of the engine for the return to Port Clinton. Normally, releasing the brakes and a prod with a pry bar under one of the wheels would be sufficient to get the car rolling.
On this brisk day, the combination of a sticking brake mechanism and stiff axle bearings kept the car, an empty covered hopper that had carried ammonium nitrate-based fertilized to the plant,from budging. So two crew members and two photographers put their backs into the effort, and the car begrudgingly started to give. After a little momentum was gained, conductor Shane Frederickson climbed up to man the brake wheel. I shirked my responsibility of pushing to back away and take this photo, leaving my friend Dennis Tiley and the engineer, Mike Bednar, to keep the covered hopper moving.
