The reacTable is a state-of-the-art multi-user electro-acoustic music instrument with a tabletop tangible user interface. Several simultaneous performers share complete control over the instrument by moving physical artefacts on the table surface and constructing different audio topologies in a kind of tangible modular synthesizer or graspable flow-controlled programming language.

I first seen this device used by Bjork at the electric picnic a few years ago when it was still being tested out and she was one of the few performers daring enough to use it in her live set.
This is a collaborative, multi-user audio visual experience. Coded objects on the table are picked up by sensors combining to create a sonic experience every time a piece is moved. Created by the Music Technology Group at the University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, it allows the instrument to be played by simultaneous performers, opening a whole universe of musical possibilities.

This was my favorite piece of the festival. The reactable has a tangible, visually compelling and intuitive user interface which makes music visible and almost graspable. It's based on a luminous round table and can be played simultaneously by several performers. By Sergi Jorda, Gunter Geiger, Martin Kaltenbrunner and Marcus Alonso.

At his September 11, 1987 City Hall press conference, Mayor Ed Koch addressed the rising racial violence, media representations of such events, and the nature of hate crimes in New York City. In Howard Beach, Queens on December 20, 1986 Michael Griffith, an African American man, was killed. Griffith and two friends had gone to a pizzeria after their car broke down. When they left the restaurant, a gang of more than 10 whites chased after the men with baseball bats and forced Griffith on to the Belt Parkway where a car struck and killed him.
In this context, Mayor Koch had a lively discussion with the press about whether race-based violence was worse than a class-based crime in Prospect Park in August where teenagers poured gasoline on a sleeping couple they believed to be homeless and lit them on fire. This press conference is only one example of the often combative give and take relationship Mayor Koch had with the media during his 12 years in City Hall.
