It's been just so hot recently that he's decided to fit me with these fetching black shades! Keeps me (and the passengers) cooler. My worry is, how can he see where we're goin'?
The chaff blows away in the breeze; the grains fall back in the basket. It's skilled work, and physically demanding.
The family spends hours a day pounding millet to make sazda, their staple porridge. I didn’t understand why they would literally be using stone-age technology to prepare their millet -- surely a mechanical mill would be far easier, & couldn’t possibly be that expensive. After all, people have had millstones for millenia. I asked the guide, but didn’t really get a very satisfying explanation. A little digging turned up a paper that answered exactly that question: www.researchgate.net/publication/310626891. The research was done at a village elsewhere in Zimbabwe; there were a few cultural differences (notably, there only women and children pound millet, whereas here the men can take a turn), but the overall setup seems very similar. TL;DR:
1.There is a miller, & some people do use his services — especially those who are too old or infirm to pound the millet themselves. People are also more likely to take advantage in years when there is a bumper crop and they’re not worried about waste. A mill can dehull in 5 or 10 minutes what takes 2 to 5 hours by hand-pounding and winnowing. But these are spread-out rural villages; a woman may have to walk a couple of kilometers to the miller, or travel by bus up to 10 km, carrying a bucket of grain big enough to feed her family for a couple of weeks. Then, since she has all she can carry with the one bucket of meal, she can’t carry back the separate bucket of bran that they normally feed to the chickens, so that goes to waste from the family’s point of view.
2.There is, ideally, a processing step in between dehulling the grain and grinding it, in which the grain is either soaked or baked, and so the woman would actually have to travel to the miller twice for each batch. Either that or skip the processing step, which results in the meal being bitter.
3.The mechanical mill removes more material, resulting in wastage: skilled hand pounding and winnowing removes about 1/5 of the volume as bran, whereas the mill removes about 2/5. Milling sacrifices not only calories from lost endosperm, but also nutrition from lost germ and fiber.
4.It costs on the order of $0.50 for 2 weeks’ worth of dehulling plus grinding. Millers routinely have to impound meal from families who can’t pay, or release it on credit and risk having to write it off.

This cassette was on a pillow that I gave Thomas & Sam years ago. They didn't have the room to move it to Argentina with them so I turned it into a tote bag for them! They were surprised and pleased and took it with them, hooray!
(note: yes, I did clean up all the loose threads before giving it to them :)
The lyrics to the first single off the Re-Imagine album...All You Need is War.
All You Need Is War
The human population
In an act of desperation
Stood in silent observation
With a morbid fascination
And an odd anticipation
Of our own obliteration.
We are full of aggravation
And very little preparation
As that leads to escalation
Subject to capitulation
Victims of manipulation
And a future of damnation.
We watch the acclimation
It is a strange sensation
As a total generation
Lacking ample education
Begins their supplication
In a fictional creation.
Only strong determination
And an urge for preservation
Will prevent the ruination
Of the entire civilisation
Lay low the lamentation
Join the call for jubilation.
There is global consternation
With some factless fabrication
A good deal of defamation
What we need is observation
With a dose of inspiration
And greed free determination.

The Magi came to Milan in the latter decades of the fourth century, on a chariot pulled by an ox and a wolf. They stopped just before the door of Ticino, and remained there until the descent of Barbarossa. With him traveled to Cologne and Milan not rintornarono most, if not ... in crumbs. Accompanying him in Italy was Eustorgio acclaimed Bishop of Milan in the year 315. Who went to Constantinople to obtain as usual, the validation of his election by the emperor Constans, Eustorgio had returned home in August with a gift really: the remains of the Magi, found first-few-years from Saint Helena, mother Constantine. The journey from Constantinople to Milan was not easy for the bishop and the three wise men. Immediately after landing in Italy, the urn containing the relics had been loaded on a cart pulled by two oxen, but along the way a wolf had attacked and killed one of two animals. How to continue the journey? Undeterred, Eustorgio managed to tame the wolf and yoked to the cart along with the other ox. Bishop Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar, were able to get so close to Milan. But they did not succeed to enter the city: near Porta Ticinese, in fact, the car became so heavy that no longer able to move an inch. The three Magi, of course, had wanted to do things in their choice of their home in Milan. During the descent of Barbarossa, the archbishop Rainald of Cologne, succeeded in including the spoils of war booty in order to increase the prestige of the Cologne Cathedral, then under construction. In Milan he was only a memory, with the sarcophagus vuoto.749 years after the theft took Milan back something: two fibula, a tibia and a vertebra, delivered to the archbishop, Cardinal Ferrari by his colleague in Cologne, Fischer.
The few remains returned in great pomp in Milan in August 1903, taking place in the ancient basilica of Sant Eustorgio.
On January 6 to celebrate the epiphany, every year the city celebrated with a procession led by the Three Kings: from Piazza Duomo, making a stop to the columns of San Lorenzo for the meeting with King Herod and ends at the Basilica of Sant Eustorgio for the deposition of gifts to the manger.
