A second view of the Pont de Re - this one a square crop... a few minutes later than my other shot so theres's a bit more colour in the clouds....
The Pont-de-Ré is a 2km bridge adjoining mainland France with the Ile-de-Ré. I took a late summer holiday on the Ile (which by the way is highly recommended) and made sure I got out of the bridge for a sunrise. That morning the damp autumnal air had shrouded the Ile in a thick fog and I drove through the Island wondering if I would get a shot at all. Thankfully the sea breeze meant that the channel over to the mainland was clear.
I only managed 5 minutes and a few shots, before I attracted the attention of local law enforcement. A police boat drifted up the channel and stopped itself about 20 meters from the shore, watching me. I wasn’t sure if I was doing anything wrong, but didn’t really want to cause an international incident and I knew my 3rd grade French wasn’t up to an interrogation. I knew I had already got the shot I came for so decided it may be best to move on... after all I wasn’t going to get anything good with a police-boat in centre frame anyway.
After planning to ask her at the top of red crater the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and forgetting the ring; I asked her at the bottom after one of the best hikes we have ever done!

The We're Here group visited Magnetiscapes yesterday. I played but I'm still late posting anything due to this darned wedding shoot which is taking forever to process.
Anyhoo, I don't have any magnets, but my mum does.
L'île de Ré ayant subi à plusieurs reprises les assauts des soldats anglais, Vauban entreprend en 1681 de renforcer les défenses de l'île pour protéger les accès de La Rochelle et de Rochefort, par la construction d'une citadelle et d'une enceinte fortifiée à Saint-Martin-de-Ré, sur sa côte Nord. Protégé par les remparts et une digue à l’entrée, le port se compose d'un très caractéristique îlot entre le bassin d’échouage et le bassin à flot, fermé et régulé par une écluse.
La citadelle, de plan carré, occupe la partie est de la ville (ici, à droite). Son système de défense se compose de quatre bastions et trois demi-lunes, bordés d'un fossé et d'un chemin couvert. Elle abritait un arsenal, des magasins à vivres et à poudre, des casernes et logements d'officiers, et ouvrait sur la mer par un petit port fortifié. L'établissement pénitentiaire de Saint-Martin-de-Ré, la plus importante maison centrale de France, se trouve maintenant à l'extérieur des murs de la citadelle, l'administration pénitentiaire se trouvant toujours à l'intérieur.
Illustration du premier système de Vauban adapté à un site de plaine, la citadelle est accompagnée d'une vaste enceinte fortifiée permettant d'héberger la population de l'île. En arc de cercle côté terre, les remparts comportent également des bastions et demi-bastions à orillons, avec deux portes monumentales : Toiras (ou de la Flotte) et Campani, qui en constituent les points d'accès. Également bordée d'un fossé et d'un chemin couvert, elle est en outre entourée d'un plan dégagé incliné vers l'extérieur des remparts (ou glacis), d'une portée de canon (cf. chemins de mémoire.gouv.fr).
You can't beat a good Bristol RE. Bygone had two, both purchased down the road in Ashford. One was ex-Kent Coach Tours (new to Wilts & Dorset) AEL105K, which I recently posted photos of in its KCT days. Regrettably I never took a shot of it with Bygone - on the day I went specifically looking for it I found out it had recently been sold for non-PSV use as a caravan.
The other was OAE956M, lately with Westbus as their spare bus. This was an ex-Bristol Omnibus Leyland O.680-powered bus, and here I caught up with it resting between duties on route 59. The 59, I discovered, was a rural run out to the villages of Boughton Monchelsea and Chart Sutton, south of Maidstone. Seemed like a good excuse for a ride.
Behind, one of M&D's fleet waits for the green light to head into the town centre. M&D's double deck fleet was extremely varied, and Maidstone was where the company's Leyland Atlanteans were concentrated. Most were ex-GMT Northern Counties-bodied buses, but there was one renovated survivor of a 1972 batch with MCW bodies. When the competition had escalated in the town, M&D had hurriedly bought some more Atlanteans from Luton & District, with NBC-style Roe or Park Royal bodies, and it's one of this batch which is visible here. Having for some years stuck with what appeared to be NBC green livery with a cream relief band, M&D were gradually repainting their double deck fleet in this brighter livery - more cream around the lower deck windows, and a slightly lighter shade of green (or was that just my imagination?).

Zur Eröffnung des Verkehrshauses in Luzern in der Schweiz im Jahre 1959 bauten die
Luzerner Eisenbahn- und Modellbaufreunde eine Modellanlage / Modell der Gotthard -
Nordrampe mit dem Abschnitt zwischen Erstfeld und Wassen im Kanton Uri in der
Schweiz.
Dafür wandten sie rund 30'000 Stunden Fronarbeit auf.

Auf dem Gotthardbahnmodell nachgebildet sind der Bahnhof Erstfeld, die beiden imposanten
Brücken über den Chärstelenbach und die Intschireuss sowie schliesslich die drei Kehr-
tunnels bei Wassen.
Auf dem Modell fehlt die Autobahn, denn es zeigt die Landschaft um das Ende der 1950er
Jahre.
Lokomotiven und Wagen der Modellzüge sind jedoch zum Teil wesentlich jünger.
Das 2007 in der Schienenhalle neu inszenierte Gotthardbahnmodell verdankt das Verkehrs-
haus ebenso den EMBL wie die heute noch liebevolle und fachmännische Betreuung der
Anlage.
Die Schau wird jede Stunde gezeigt und dauert 8 Minuten.

To mark the inauguration of the Swiss Museum of Transport in 1959, the railway and model
railway enthusiasts of Lucerne built a model representing the Gotthard north access ramp
between Erstfeld and Wassen.
They put in around 30,000 hours of voluntary work.

Description Technical

Ascending the mounting through helical tunnels – the Gotthard railway model shows Erstfeld
station, the two imposing bridges over the Chärstelenbach and the Intschireuss and finally the
three helical tunnels near Wassen.
The model does not show the motorway since it depicts the landscape as it was around the
end of the 1950s.
However, the locomotives and carriages making up the model trains are in some cases
considerably newer.
The Swiss Museum of Transport is grateful to the railway and model railway enthusiasts of
Lucerne for the newly designed 2007 Gotthard railway model in the rail transport hall as well
as for its loving and expert maintenance. The show runs every hour and lasts 8 minutes.
