Julius G. Brown joined the Union Army in his hometown of Batavia, Illinois in 1862 leaving behind a wife and daughter. After being stricted with typhoid fever, he became unfit for combat duty and was ordered to the United States Sanitary Commission in 1863. The Commission, established by Abraham Lincoln in 1861, coordinated the women volunteers who contributed to the Union's wartime efforts.
