This is the Cuban White Butterfly - Ganyra menciae - which is a largish white with a wingspan of 62-72mm. It can be found predominantly in Cuba but also in St Lucia and Venezuela. There's not a lot I can tell you about this butterfly because I can't find much at all about it. The flower is the Stachytarpheta cayennensis and is known by many names including Cayenne Snakeweed, Rattail, False Verbena, Blue Snakeweed Brazilian Tea, etc. etc. It is a perennial shrub which can grow to 2,5 mtrs tall. Seen in Guardalavaca, Cuba.

The Ridiculous Tale of Rat Tail.
Once upon a time there was a squirrel called Rat Tail. (In fact Rat Tail is still around, but since most stories start out this way that's how this tale begins, too.)
Rat Tail showed up one day, romping around the backyard with all the other squirrels. At first, I actually thought we had a giant rat who was foraging for treats - and the squirrels were actually tolerating it.
After several days, very upset about our rat problem I took some photos and realized - our rat was a squirrel! Can you say Big Sigh of Relief!!!!!!
Suddenly I was in love with Rat Tail... poor little thing! What could have happened? Realizing this was one question which will remain forever unanswered I had to face reality - it is what it is.
It's been a few months now, and Rat Tail still shows up most days, as rambunctious as ever. Rat Tail doesn't come close enough to the house to get a clear shot but remarkably, I got this the other day. A silhouette of sorts, highlighted by the radiant sun shine, revealing that ridiculous little rat tail is actually kinda fuzzy.

It was about 8:30 at night, well after dark. I was investigating noises I was hearing. Turned the light on and startled a possum.

It's been a few weeks since I've seen Rat Tail, our little squirrel visitor with a ratty looking tail. I was beginning to wonder if the fur had grown back, and now he was blending in with the others.
But no. He showed up the other day to check out one of the Goodie Bowls, and that tail still looks ratty - maybe a tiny bit more fur than before, but I can't be sure. Otherwise, he looks great!
This is what happens when I forget to move the outdoor trash cans away from the screen door. The bowl of cat food is so the neighbor's outdoor cats won't eat my birds & squirrels since I offer easy food up high where only a cat can get to it. But when the trash can is left in reach of the screen door, baby possums have learned how to climb the screen and reach the edible treasure. I saw this guy one night & went out a different door to sneak up and get a few shots before moving the food out of reach. He had just reached the top of the can in this shot. Checking to make sure no one around, didn't see me yet.

We have a little squirrel who shows up almost every day. He has a distinctive feature, so we can easily tell him apart from the others. That tail is basically hairless, so we affectionately call him Rat Tail.
In the past, every once in a while a squirrel with a "rat tail" will show up. No idea if it's from some kind of injury, a close encounter with something, or a genetic condition, or even something temporary, but whatever it is, it is definitely obvious!
And while I think he's kinda cute, unfortunately, some of the other squirrels will chase him away if he comes too close to them, in essence not letting him play their reindeer games.
Yesterday morning I stepped outside before sunrise and saw movement. Turned on a porch light & saw this. I'd been wanting to see this for years. She had 2 babies on her back with a 3rd climbing on. The mama froze as I ran back inside and scrambled to get my camera assembled. I was very lucky, she was still standing frozen when I got back. So dark I had to use flash. I was about 10 feet from her.

so... i've been tagged by BOP33P and catzi. i'd better do this 10 facts (:
1. hmm... i'm at the first one and i'm already stuck. oh i know. i'm a TCK (third culture kid). i like to say that means i have my own culture going on. i like to be myself. i hate it when people say "you'll fit right in" i don't want to fit in.
2. i have a rattail. and i actually like it. whenever i go to the hair dressers they always want to cut it... and i have to be extremely firm to say no. they just don't get it.
3. i want to want a difference in the world. i don't want to just study -> marry -> have kids -> die.
4. i want to go to more than 50 countries before i die. i have gone to 9 so far and it's going to be 13 this summer.
5. i don't think it's hard being myself. i don't know why. i feel bad saying that...
6. i wish my wardrobe was the style i want it to be... but it's not. it's kind of still in the early teen stage where you're still forming your style. i need to just throw everything i don't like away.
7. above everything on earth, i love my friends the most. i truly do love them. i can't express it. but they make me so happy i want to cry.
8. i wish i could produce pictures constantly liked.
9. i'm running about of things to say... okay first thing that comes to mind is: i'm saving sex for marriage. oh. haha :P that's a bit awkward.

I'd been eagerly watching my owl box since an owl visited it for one day in mid October. Only squirrels had occupied it since. At dusk yesterday I got excited when I saw a face with white on it which would rule out a squirrel. Grabbed my camera, turned on the flash since it was so dark. Dang it, that is not an owl either. Has to be a pretty small possum to get in that opening.

My back door is glass and looks out on an open breezeway between my back yard and side yard. It has become an urban game trail of sorts with feral cats, raccoons, possums, lizards and bugs to be seen at night. So I have a camera near by. Which is how I captured this tense encounter between Goliath, the alpha male possum that rules my yard and a youngster old enough to be living on its own. The teenager whirled and ran off right after this shot. Thanks to my indoor cats & the wild critters trying to look thru the door, the glass always seems to be dirty when I take these shots but you can see what was going on.

It was dusk & I was about to close my blinds and put away my camera & tripod when I saw this large possum. It was eating birdseed under my feeder. I took this shot thru the window and had to lighten it up considerably since it was getting dark outside. Some darker shots I didn't keep showed she was female. She may have been pregnant from her plumpness & needed all the calories she could get.

Thalaiyar Falls, also known as Rat Tail Falls is located in the Palani Hills of Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu State, South India. It is 975 ft (297 m) tall and is the highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu, the sixth highest waterfall in India and the 267th highest in the world.
Lil cutie came back the next afternoon. Just as I took a photo, a fly landed on its tail, hitching a ride.

When my flash went off for my 2nd shot, it got mom's attention again. With 3 little sets of eyes also looking my way. Number 4 was still trying to hang on and facing the wrong direction.

I was checking to see if the cat was done eating so I could put the food bowl back up & caught a baby possum helping itself. Got a camera with flash & took a few shots. Here he is caught red handed (red mouthed?)

I keep a bowl of fresh water out on the breezeway and all kinds of critters take advantage of it. This time it was Goliath getting a refreshing drink. He is bigger than any of my cats.

After my first shot, I stood still & mama finally relaxed and turned sideways. That is when I saw there were 4 babies, not 3. Number 4 was struggling to find a handhold on the other side from it's siblings. Every big family has that one kid that marches to a different drummer.

I thought Baby would be eating the birdseed mix with dried fruit bits and nuts but turned out to be eating tender new sunflower seedlings from sprouted sunflower seeds.

I looked out my window & saw 2 tiny baby possums eating the birdseed, nuts and dried fruit under my feeder. Every year this happens. The babies come out in daylight when they have no competition from the adult possums and eat everything they can find. So cute.

It was after 11pm when I took some recyclables out to the bin & heard a rustle. Got a camera with flash and discovered a little cutie visiting my back deck. Those toes get me every time, so bizarre.

There are several possums living under my deck including several tiny babies on their own. The babies have learned to hear when I put food out for an outdoor cat and they try to eat any leftovers between when the cat leaves and I check to pick up the food. This all happens at night. The babies look so cute that they are able to woof down a fair amount of food in the time it takes me to grab a camera with flash to get a shot before I rescue the food bowl. Some of the babies like this one are starting to get a pot belly from this habit.

Mama ignored me and the camera flashes and wandered around the deck sniffing and exploring for a minute or so. Baby # 4 finally seemed secure. Babies stay in mom's pouch until they are about 2 1/2 months old when they emerge and climb on her back. They stay with her until they are about 4 to 5 months old.

This is the look I got when I scooped up the cat food and moved it. Then I scooped up the baby and released him back on the ground. I feel like a big meanie but he needs to learn how to forage for his natural food on his own. That will lead to better survival skills.

Found a huge battle-scarred male possum. He went into defensive mode & told me to back off. 1 lower & 1 upper fang was broken giving him a rather snaggle-toothed look. If you zoom in you can see quite a bit of detail in that mouth.
