Die Ratten (Rattus) sind eine Nagetiergattung aus der Gruppe der Altweltmäuse (Murinae). Die Gattung umfasst etwa 65 Arten, von denen die meisten in Südostasien, Neuguinea und Australien verbreitet sind. Als Kulturfolger haben insbesondere die Wanderratte und Hausratte, die in Deutschland vom Aussterben bedroht ist, eine weltweite Verbreitung erlangt. Von der wilden Wanderratte stammt die domestizierte, als Haustier gehaltene Farbratte ab. In einem weiteren Sinn wird die Bezeichnung Ratten unsystematisch auch auf viele andere Vertreter der Altweltmäuse und anderer Nagetiere angewandt.
The rats (Rattus) are a genus of rodents from the group of Old World mice (Murinae). The genus comprises around 65 species, most of which are found in Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Australia. The Norway rat and the domestic rat, which is threatened with extinction in Germany, have become particularly widespread worldwide. The domesticated coloured rat, which is kept as a pet, is descended from the wild Norway rat. In a broader sense, the term rats is also applied unsystematically to many other representatives of Old World mice and other rodents.
