" But the rats sleep at night"
Based on a story by WOLFGANG BORCHERT.
The short story "The Rats Are Sleeping After All" tells the story of a boy meeting an old man in the rubble of a German city immediately after the Second World War.
The man learns through sensitive questioning from the boy that he is sitting here to scare away the rats that want to eat from his little brother buried under the rubble. For a moment, the man can draw the boy's attention to a little rabbit and ease his post-war suffering with a little humanity.
I close my eyes and I see you dancing
Do you see me when you close yours too
'Cause every kiss that I don't give
Is another life that I don't live
And mama it's so much sweeter when I do, hey

They don't eat, don't sleep
They don't feed, they don't seethe
Bare their gums when they moan and squeak
Lick the dirt off a larger one's feet
They don't push, don't crowd
Congregate until they're much too loud
Fuck to procreate till they are dead
Drink the blood of their so-called best friend
They don't scurry when something bigger comes their way
Don't pack themselves together and run as one
Don't shit where they're not supposed to
Don't take what's not theirs, they don't compare
They don't scam, don't fight
Don't oppress an equal's given rights
Starve the poor so they can be well fed
Line their holes with the dead ones' bread, no no
They don't scurry when something bigger comes their way

The rats (Rattus) are a genus of rodents from the group of Old World mice (Murinae). The genus comprises around 65 species, most of which are found in Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Australia. The Norway rat and the domestic rat, which is threatened with extinction in Germany, have become particularly widespread worldwide. The domesticated coloured rat, which is kept as a pet, is descended from the wild Norway rat. In a broader sense, the term rats is also applied unsystematically to many other representatives of Old World mice and other rodents.
