Doel Haven Antwerpen

Reflections in the winter are always more beautiful. It must be the water that is getting cold and less quick to react. The reflections become sharper and more oily.

Had a busy time with my Australian relatives and with The Night of terror on the Imagine FilmFestival. Tonight i will be back commenting on your Flickr pictures.

Leiden is the city with the oldest University in the Netherlands (and according to my son, who studies there, the best university too. )

A very quiet sunrise [Rapenburg, Leiden, 10/9/2022]

A couple of days ago I posted "Tsubaki in Groningen I", but I couldn't resist another photo - though in the light drizzle - from the same shrub in my garden abutting the vaster expanse of the unviersity garden which incorporates what was once that of the third order Franciscan sisters of the Sijwen convent.

After Linnaeus had altered the Kämpher name of Tsubaki to camellia, it remained relatively unknown until the exploits of Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold (1796-1866). Von Siebold, originally a German physician, took service with the Dutch and spent 1823-1829 and 1859-1862 on Decima island, just off the coast of Nagasaki in Japan. Here he practiced and taught western medicine, and put together an enormous collection of natural specimens which he shipped to Europe. Banned from Japan as being a spy - detailed maps of that country were found in his luggage on its inspection by the authorities - he returned to Europe in 1830 and made landfall at Antwerp harbor. Just then the Belgians were fighting for their independence from the Netherlands and they refused to allow Von Siebold's collection to be transported to Leiden. The intrepid doctor however managed to convince them that his collection of dried 'stuff' had no commerical value and he was given leave to take the precious cargo to Leiden, via Rotterdam and Gent. Here it became the basis of much European research of Japan (honored recently by the university of Leiden in the establishment of a museum named after Von Siebold in his former house on the Rapenburg near the 'Academie'). The camellia - now called masayoshi - was part of this enterprise.

In Japan, Von Siebold had fallen in love with Kasumoto Taki, but the law had not allowed them to marry. Living outside of official wedlock, they had a daughter Oine or Ine (1827-1903), who was the first female medical doctor in Japan. This camellia photo is in ironic fashion - see my earlier posting - dedicated to the memory of these courageous women, mother and daughter, who resisted social pressure against foreigners and who were proudly independent.

Leiden Observatory ( near the Hortus botanicus ) before dusk sets in, as seen from de Witte Singel.

Leiden Observatory (Sterrewacht Leiden in Dutch) is an astronomical observatory in the city of Leiden, Netherlands. It was established by Leiden University in 1633, to house the quadrant of Snellius, and is the oldest operating University observatory in the world (before this, astronomy taught at medieval universities tended to be of a more theoretical nature, and any observations were usually done with private equipment rather than at University observatories —see this timeline).

The original observatory used observing platforms on the roof of the main university building at the Rapenburg. In 1860 a large, modern observatory was erected at the Witte Singel. This building was the home of the astronomy department until it moved to the science campus north-west of the city centre in 1974. Although professional astronomical observations are no longer carried out from Leiden itself, the department still calls itself Leiden Observatory. Today's astronomers instead travel to the big observatories, e.g. ESO's VLT in Chile.

The astronomy department (Sterrewacht Leiden) is the largest in the Netherlands and is internationally renowned, performing research in a wide range of astronomical disciplines.

A number of prominent astronomers and physicists have done work at Leiden Observatory, including Willem de Sitter, Ejnar Hertzsprung, and Jan Oort, all of whom have served as Directors. Another famous employee was Jacobus Kapteyn. The Observatory has recently been renovated. Source: Wikipedia.

Is art boring? Are museums just for adults? Not at all! Art is accessible to everyone, and so is the Kunstmuseum The Hague, regardless of age. The museum has specially designed the Halls of Wonders for children aged nine and over and young adults. A place where they can wander, tablet in hand, and lose themselves in art, fashion, and their own thoughts.

They can embark on an adventure, tablet in hand, by completing a whole series of missions in these Halls of Wonders. Dance with Mondrian, reflect on the value of art, or play dress-up in the Fashion Show Hall.

After visiting the Halls, you will arrive at the spectacular labyrinth, where you will be invited to choose three inspiring works of art. You can choose from fine art, photography, decorative arts, architecture, and, of course, fashion. Using the selected works, you can then discover the effect art has on you in your own "room of wonders": your brain. Then, create a Room of Wonders based on your own creative ideas. You'll leave with a total immersion in art, fashion, and their applications.

The Rooms of Wonders allow you to better understand art and yourself, through games that help you explore what you find beautiful, ugly, attractive, or completely uninspiring.

Don't worry, the Games of Wonders are designed for all ages and interests. Whether you're passionate about fashion, abstract art, or photography, you'll find everything you need here. The Games of Wonders are even more fun when played in pairs.

The Room of Wonders was designed in collaboration with exhibition architects Kossmann.dejong, Kiss the Frog, Rapenburg Plaza, and Tungsten. The Rooms of Wonders are sponsored by Rabobank The Hague Region. The maze is sponsored by the Hofman & Sip Fund.

18/02/2017; I was riding the train of luck for a minute or two, as the water in the canal calmed down as I was walking along it. And shortly after I made this shot, a gentle yet fierce enough gust of wind made an end to the reflection.

Doel is a subdivision of the municipality of Beveren in the Flemish province of East-Flanders. It is located near the river the Scheldt, in a polder of the Waasland.

The first mention of the village dates from 1267, when "The Doolen" name is first mentioned. Until the 18th century the village was an island surrounded by purposefully flooded land, with the remainder, north of the village, known as "The Drowned Land of Saeftinghe". The "Eylandt den Doel" is completely surrounded by old seawalls. The dike encloses the hamlets of "Sweet Verge", "Saftingen", "Rapenburg" and "Ouden Doel" (Olden Doel)

The Doel polder site is unique to Belgium and dates back to the Eighty Years War (1568-1648). The typical checkerboard pattern dates from 1614, when these geometric farmlands were first mapped, and they have seen little change over the years. This fact makes the village a rare example of regional urbanization. The village has many historic buildings, including the oldest stone windmill of the country (1611), and the only windmill on a sea wall. The Baroque Hooghuis (1613) that is associated with the entourage and holdings of the famous 17th century Antwerp painter, Peter Paul Rubens.

Some of the other historical and cultural buildings in the town area are the "Reynard Farm" (De Reinaerthoeve), with a monumental farmhouse and barn. "De Doolen" is a historic school. "De Putten", or "The Wells", is a peat extraction area and has an historically unique 18th-century farmstead and inn site "The Old Hoefyzer", with one of the last remaining historic barns.

Doel is threatened with complete demolition due to the future enlargement of the Port of Antwerp. This has seen many people having to sell their homes to the development corporation of that enlargement. Many historical buildings will be destroyed.

An author says in one magazine article concerning the demolition of the village, "The Belgian village of Doel was reclaimed from the river Scheldt at the beginning of the 17th century. Three hundred years later and the village that would grow behind the sea wall is under threat. The threat comes not from a failing dyke or an unexpectedly sudden rise in water levels, but rather from the expanding Port of Antwerp and its insatiable need for more and more land along the Scheldt in which to grow. Now, Doel, the last of the Belgian polder villages on the banks of the Scheldt near the North Sea, faces possible demolition. The construction of a large dock and container terminal capable of receiving deep-sea ships is already underway on a site immediately next to the village, and the Port Authority proposes building a second one where the village now stands."

A memorial to British soldiers killed nearby during World War II was removed from the town square during the early morning hours in 2011, according to a BBC report
